Chloe and Eevee want to learn about Espeon and Umbreon, so Professor Cerise directs our heroes to a solar eclipse festival at the Eclipse Castle in Johto. There, Chloe meets Soleil, the future liege of Eclipse Castle—and the two girls look exactly alike! Soleil’s Espeon and Umbreon display their complete loyalty to her. Just before Soleil’s debut as liege, another descendant of the castle’s family, Ilunas, mistakenly kidnaps Chloe instead. But Chloe manages to escape, and after confronting Ilunas, Soleil shows him compassion and asks him to join her in leading the castle as a reunited family!

Plot

At the Cerise Laboratory, Professor Cerise, Chrysa, and Ren introduce Chloe to Espeon and Umbreon, two of Eevee's potential evolutions, and tell her, Ash, and Goh about the Eclipse Castle in Johto, where Espeon and Umbreon have been cherished for a long time. Excited to meet more of Eevee's evolutions, especially after hearing about the upcoming Eclipse Festival held at the time of a total solar eclipse, the group immediately departs to Johto.

The group arrives at the Eclipse Castle, where they see a crest featuring Espeon and Umbreon on the castle wall. While Ash and Goh wonder what it's all about, Eevee senses the presence of an Espeon and an Umbreon on a nearby hill and heads for it with Chloe. Ash and Goh, not noticing this, are approached by an old woman, Helia, who explains to them that long ago, an Espeon and an Umbreon saved the then-liege of the castle from an attempt to overthrow him during an Eclipse Festival. Ever since then, these two Pokémon have been revered for their bravery. Moreover, the two together symbolize the eclipse, when the sun and the moon become one. Ash and Goh ask her how she knows so much, and Helia reveals that she's the current liege of the castle, although she's due to pass on her title later today. Only at this point do Ash and Goh notice that Chloe and Eevee are no longer present.

On the nearby hill, a girl is standing next to a sundial and praying for the Eclipse Festival to run smoothly, when her Espeon suddenly gets a vision of Chloe's Eevee falling off a cliff. When this indeed happens a few seconds later, Espeon is able to save Eevee from the fall with Psychic and bring her back up. When Chloe goes to see her Eevee, she notices that the girl, Soleil, looks almost exactly like her. Seeing their identical looks, Soleil gets a fun idea.

Back at the Eclipse Castle, Ash, Goh, and Helia are surprised to see how identical Chloe and Soleil look, especially when they don't realize that they've swapped their clothes until they themselves point it out. As they settle down, Chloe tells Soleil how her Eevee seems to be incapable of evolving, and she wants her to choose her own path. Soleil sympathizes with her, since her Espeon and Umbreon evolved the same way. Her female Eevee evolved into Espeon one day after saving her from a fall out of loyalty to her, while her male Eevee evolved the following night after defending his beloved Espeon from a wild Crobat. Soleil feels that Espeon, who is strong during the day, and Umbreon, who is strong during the night, support each other and make up for each other's flaws. She believes that humans and Pokémon can all support one another to make up for someone else's flaws to make the world a bit easier place to live in. Ash, Goh, and Chloe are impressed by Soleil's way of thinking and feel that she is worthy of becoming the next liege of the castle.

Soleil leads the three to another room and shows them a painting depicting the moment just before a previous liege, Sorin, was attacked by his younger brother, Luno, in an attempt to dethrone him, an incident like which Soleil wishes to avoid. The sound of fireworks signals the start of the festival, and Soleil departs to start preparing for it. Further away, a ninja boy observes the castle from a tree, swearing to himself to put an end to a "long humiliation". When heading to watch the festival with Ash and Goh, Chloe suddenly realizes that she didn't change back to her own clothes yet, and tells the boys to go ahead while she heads back. However, along the way, she's ambushed by the ninja boy, who has his Ariados bind her with String Shot. He addresses her as Soleil, mistaking her for her doppelgänger, grabs her, and flies away with her using his Noctowl. Eevee runs off and alerts Ash and Goh that something has happened to Chloe.

As the festival begins, Soleil enters the castle balcony. However, before she can say anything to the people below, the ninja boy attacks her with Noctowl and demands to know how she got away. When Soleil has no idea what he's talking about, the ninja boy realizes that the person he captured wasn't Soleil, and demands to be declared the new liege of the castle before he'll free Chloe. Meanwhile, Ash, Goh, and Eevee are trying to find Chloe, having no luck, until Eevee suddenly gets a vision of the tree where Chloe's been hidden, and starts leading the boys to it.

At the castle, the ninja boy continues to push his demand to be granted the liegeship of the castle in exchange for Chloe's safety. Helia tells the boy to reveal his name so that the declaration can be made, and he reveals his name to be Ilunas. Just before Soleil can make the declaration, Ash and Goh return with the freed Chloe. Annoyed by the interruption, Ilunas sends out his Ariados and Ursaring. Ash and Goh prepare to battle him, but Soleil asks them to leave it to her and Chloe. Ilunas's Pokémon attack with Poison Jab, Wing Attack, and Hammer Arm, all of which are blocked by Espeon's Reflect while Umbreon counterattacks with Snarl. Eevee then proceeds to dodge Ariados's String Shot and attack with Tackle, which Ariados easily shrugs off. Ilunas tells Ariados to use Pin Missile, but before Espeon can use Reflect again, Eevee uses Copycat to use it instead, blocking the Pin Missile. Soleil has Umbreon use Dark Pulse to counter Noctowl's Air Slash while Espeon uses Wish. When Umbreon is struck by Ursaring's Slash, Espeon's Wish takes effect and heals him, giving a prime example of Soleil's earlier words about supporting one another.

The solar eclipse starts to occur, which Soleil recognizes as their big chance. As Espeon is powered up by sunlight and Umbreon is powered up by moonlight, a total eclipse, when the two celestial bodies become one, is a once-in-a-lifetime chance for both of them to power up at the same time. Eevee counters Ariados's Pin Missile with a mimicked Dark Pulse, and as the moment of total eclipse occurs, Umbreon and Espeon attack together with Dark Pulse and Psychic, defeating Ilunas's remaining Pokémon.

With the battle over, Soleil approaches Ilunas and tells him that Helia has been looking for him. The people of the castle have names derived from the sun and the moon, like how "Soleil" is from the sun, as was the name of the former liege Sorin, while the former liege's brother, Luno, was named after the moon. Since this also applies to Ilunas, Soleil figures that he must be Luno's descendant. Ilunas admits this, telling how his ancestor felt ashamed at having failed in becoming the liege of the castle, and he was determined to end his family's life in secrecy by becoming the Eclipse Castle liege himself.

To Ilunas's confusion, Helia suddenly hugs him and tells him that she had heard of a child named Ilunas, apologizing for having not found him sooner and been able to save him from all the hardship. Ilunas's confusion only deepens when Soleil suddenly not only declares that she'll be the new liege of the castle, but that Ilunas will help her. She tells him that he feels happy to see the castle's "moon" returning, and gives him a speech about her ideals of cooperation and making up for each other's weaknesses. She believes that squabbling won't get them anywhere, and they've got to learn to put behind the necessary things in their pasts so they can continue to move on. Moved to tears by Soleil's words, Ilunas accepts his new place at her side.
