Release information
Sword & Shield Series
This card was first released in each of the Japanese V Starter Sets. The English print was first released in the Sword & Shield expansion as a Holofoil, along with Full Art and Secret Rainbow Rare prints. The Regular print features artwork by Yusuke Ohmura, while the Full Art and Secret prints feature artwork by kirisAki. All three Sword & Shield prints originate from the Japanese Sword expansion. Non Holofoil versions of the Regular print were included in the Sword & Shield and Rebel Clash Build & Battle Boxes as well as every Theme Deck of the Sword & Shield Series.
In Japan, the Regular print was reprinted as a Non Holofoil in the Sword & Shield Premium Trainer Box, in the Charizard & Grimmsnarl VMAX Starter Sets, and in each of the V Starter Decks. A S-P Promotional print was also awarded to players who had accumulated at least one Championship Point over the course of the 2019-2020 season, which was curtailed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Eligible events included the Tokyo and Aichi 2020 Champion's League tournaments plus City Leagues, Trainer's Leagues, and Station Leagues that were completed before restrictions were introduced. Copies of this print began to be distributed in mid-September 2020. The Regular print was reprinted as a Holofoil in the Champion's Path expansion and in the Japanese Shiny Star V subset, and again as a Non Holofoil in the Japanese Single Strike & Rapid Strike Premium Trainer Boxes, Sword & Shield Family Pokémon Card Game set, and Zacian & Zamazenta vs Eternatus Special Deck Set. A new print with artwork by Hideki Ishikawa featuring Professor Juniper was included in the Shining Fates expansion, first released in the Japanese Venusaur & Blastoise VMAX Starter Sets. This print also replaced the Regular Professor Magnolia print in a second version of the Charizard VMAX Starter Set from the VMAX Battle Triple Starter Set. Holofoil versions of this Professor Juniper print were also included in the V Battle Deck—Victini vs. Gardevoir, the V Battle Deck—Rayquaza vs. Noivern, and in both of the Japanese High-Class Decks.
Another new print with artwork by Yusuke Kozaki featuring Professor Willow was released in the summer of 2021 around the world as part of a promotion to celebrate Pokémon GO's fifth anniversary, the 25th anniversary of the Trading Card Game, and as the first collaboration between Pokémon GO and the TCG. Each individual card had a special promotional code printed below its effect that allowed players to participate in Special Research in Pokémon GO.[1][2]
Regular and Full Art prints depicting Professor Oak were included in the special Celebrations expansion. The Regular print features artwork by KIYOTAKA OSHIYAMA, while the Full Art print features artwork by Ken Sugimori. These cards were later released as part of the Japanese 25th Anniversary Collection. A Full Art print illustrated by Yuu Nishida featuring Professor Juniper was released as part of the Japanese VMAX Climax subset. This print was subsequently available as a SWSH Black Star Promo in the Professor Juniper Premium Tournament Collection from May 20, 2022. This product also included Cosmos Holofoil versions of the Regular Professor Juniper print.
Another print featuring Professor Rowan with artwork by Sanosuke Sakuma was included in the Japanese Start Deck 100 and could be obtained in Non Holofoil and Mirror Holofoil versions. Holofoil and Non Holofoil Professor Rowan prints were also released in the Japanese Star Birth expansion and VSTAR Premium Trainer Box, respectively. The Holofoil print was later included in the Brilliant Stars expansion and Non Holofoil prints could be found in the Brilliant Stars Build & Battle Box and V Battle Deck—Lycanroc vs. Corviknight. In Japan, Non Holofoil Professor Rowan prints were reprinted in both VSTAR Starter Sets; Mirror Holofoil prints were reprinted in the Start Deck 100 CoroCoro Comic Version, in both of the VSTAR & VMAX High-Class Decks, and in the Charizard VSTAR vs Rayquaza VMAX Special Deck Set. Full Art and Rainbow Rare Professor Willow prints illustrated by Yusuke Kozaki were included in the Pokémon GO expansion and Japanese subset of the same name. The Professor Rowan Regular print was reprinted, alongside a Professor Rowan Full Art print with artwork also by Sanosuke Sakuma, in the Japanese VSTAR Universe subset. The Full Art print was later released in the special Crown Zenith expansion outside Asia.
Scarlet & Violet Series
Professor's Research was given two new Holofoil prints in the English Scarlet & Violet expansion featuring the two Professors from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Professor Sada and Professor Turo, with artwork by kirisAki. The 189/198 print featuring Professor Sada was released as a Holofoil card in the Japanese Scarlet ex expansion, and as a Non Holofoil card in the ex Starter Set Sprigatito & Lucario ex and ex Starter Set Quaxly & Mimikyu ex. The 190/198 print featuring Professor Turo was released as a Holofoil card in the Japanese Violet ex expansion, and as a Non Holofoil card in the ex Starter Set Fuecoco & Ampharos ex and ex Starter Set Pikachu ex & Pawmot. Professor Sada and Professor Turo were also printed as Full Art ultra rare cards with artwork by kirisAki in the Scarlet & Violet expansion. Professor Sada originated from the Japanese Scarlet ex expansion; Professor Turo originated from the Japanese Violet ex expansion. Outside Asia, Non Holofoil versions of both Regular prints were first available in the Scarlet & Violet Build & Battle Box.
The Regular Professor Sada print (numbered 021/SV-P) and Professor Turo print (numbered 022/SV-P) were reprinted as Japanese SV-P Promotional cards and were two of nine possible cards included in special packs sent to Event Organizers in January 2023 for distribution in official events hosted by them. These prints feature the Event Organizer logo in the bottom right corners of the illustrations. In Japan, both Professors' Regular prints were reprinted across the ex Start Decks, in the Ruler of the Black Flame Deck Build Box, in the 2023 World Championships Yokohama Deck: Pikachu, across the Terastal Starter Sets, in the Venusaur & Charizard & Blastoise Special Deck Set ex, in the Shiny Treasure ex subset, across the Starter Deck & Build Sets, the Pokémon Card Game Battle Academy Deck Kit, both Battle Master Decks, in the Stellar Miracle Deck Build Box, and the Stellar Tera Type Starter Sets. The Shiny Treasure ex reprints prompted both being included in the Paldean Fates expansion.
The Regular Professor Sada and Professor Turo prints were also reprinted as one of seven SV-P Promotional cards available in Pokémon Card Gym Promo Card Pack 7, which was distributed at Pokémon Card Gym venues able to do so from July 19, 2024.[3] These Gym Promo Card Pack prints feature the Pokémon Card Gym logo.

Trivia
- This card's effect is identical to Professor Juniper and Professor Sycamore. As such, it was ruled that a deck may only contain one of the three.
- Professor's Research was specifically named to prevent the need for future rulings such as this for subsequent prints featuring different Professors.[4] The name of the specific Professor on each printing of this card is printed in the upper right corner.
- The Professor Oak Regular print of this card was featured in the Illust Story IS02, Professor's Research.
