At the front of the gym you will see Flint who notes that Volkner seems to be excited to battle you and reminds you to help reignite Volkner's passion for battling before departing for the Pokémon League.
The trick for handling the gym puzzle is to go on the revolving platforms and hit the switches. In the first room hit the green switch on the platform on the right once. Then head for the switch on the left and hit it once to reach the next room. In the second room, go for the nearby blue switch to the left and hit it three times. You can then cross the drawbridge near the stairs and get to the blue switch in the upper left hand corner. Hit that switch then the nearby green switch to get the drawbridge around the right wall ready so now you can go to the third room.
For the third and final room hit the nearby red switch once and then the one that is nearby to the left to be able to pass the drawbridge on the left wall. Then follow the path to the green switch and hit it twice then hit the blue switch once and follow the path to use the drawbridge on the right wall and return to the first part of this room. Touch the first red switch you used again and backtrack past the right drawbridge again and you'll find the red switch moved the revolving platforms to where you now can reach Volkner.

You'll need to be a bit diverse in your type matching with both {{t|Grass}} and {{type|Ground}} Pokémon as Volkner's Pokémon are equipped with moves to counter their weaknesses. Having Ground-type Pokémon like {{p|Hippowdon}}, {{p|Quagsire}}, {{p|Mamoswine}} or {{p|Steelix}} will help. Volkner's {{p|Jolteon}} is equipped with {{m|Iron Tail}} to counter Mamoswine or ground-types with {{type|Rock}} characteristics. Besides the rock-types with their high defenses, Quagsire or Steelix could also bring it down. {{p|Raichu}} and {{p|Luxray}} are equipped to deal with their weakpoints but Quagsire should have no problems. Unless if you can take it out quickly, do not use {{p|Gliscor}} or other Pokémon that suffer a duel type weakness to {{type|Ice}}s when facing Luxray. Volkner's star Pokémon {{p|Electvire}} has {{m|Fire Punch}} to counter Steelix or Grass Pokémon, but those Ground-types with Rock-type characteristics can easily beat it such as with {{p|Rhydon}}.
Once you beat Volkner he is so happy for this exciting battle, he give you the Beacon Badge which allow you to use Waterfall outside of battle and since you now have all eight badges then any Pokémon outside of battle will obey you. He'll also give you {{TM|57|Charge Beam}} a damaging electric type move that has a 70% chance of raising the users Sp. Attack by one level. Now head to Jasmine again and {{ga|Barry}} will appear and acknowledge his new purpose for getting stronger, pointing out he'll challenge you later when he does get stronger. Jasmine who is touched by this conversation will give you {{HM|07|Waterfall}}. While you can head north to the Pokémon League, let's make a quick pitstop to Mt. Coronet to pick up some important items.
==Mt. Coronet South Side (third visit)==
Backtrack your way back to the first area where you were first outside in the summit earlier and then use the eastern entrance that will take you to the lower part of Mt. Coronet 4F that was below the waterfall. Now that you have the ability to use the move Waterfall outside of battle you can climb the waterfall to find the {{DL|Legendary artifacts|Adamant Orb}} and the {{DL|Legendary artifacts|Lustrous Orb}} (as well as the {{DL|Plate|Stone Plate}} that is hidden). You will need both Orbs for being able to catch {{p|Dialga}} and {{p|Palkia}} later.
Also if you return to the tunnel, since Team Galactic is gone now you can go through the door that was previously inaccessible that will take you to the entrance of Mt. Coronet's north area where you can find {{TM|02|Dragon Claw}}. Return to Sunyshore City and head north through the use of {{m|Surf}} to reach {{rt|223|Sinnoh}}.

Route 222

Route 222

This route is the route you need to take from Valor Lakefront to reach Sunyshore City. Here is the only place you can find a wild Electabuzz. Much like with Magmar at Fuego Ironworks if you wish to breed Electabuzz to get an Elekid then you will have to go through a lot of trial and error to get a female Electabuzz since they are rare. The two houses on the beach are not essential to go to, but the one on the left has a Pikachu fan club where one of the Pikachu found here is a Pikachu trainer in disguise which is the Pikachu in the upper part of the house near the TV. The other house has a fisherman inside who is looking for giant Pokémon. If you give him the Pokémon he requests each day then he'll give you a prize.

Also on this route is the final Honey tree you'll find in the game. The man at the end of the cliff will give you TM56 (Fling). Make sure to face the fisherman one the beach as one of them has a Feebas which is a hard to spot Pokémon, especially if you did not try to find a wild one earlier on Mt. Coronet and that you need to spot one to help get the National Pokédex. Once you are done here head through the gatehouse to reach Sunyshore City.

Sunyshore City

Sunyshore City

When you enter the city, you'll encounter Flint of the Elite Four, where upon recognizing that you are trainer asks if you cheer up his friend the gym leader Volkner who has been bored lately from the lack of excitement. You can explore around the city if you want but before you can challenge the gym you need to find Volkner first at the lighthouse. Also in the north area you can encounter Jasmine, the gym leader from Johto though you'll have to wait until you beat Volkner to get an important item from her.

Sunyshore Market

The building that is slightly north of the Poké Mart is the Sunyshore Market. Here you can buy seals for decorating your Poké Balls if you got the Seal Case in Solaceon Town first that was found in the house near the Solaceon Ruins. There is also a woman here that will give you the Effort Ribbon to your lead Pokémon if they have enough Effort Values that equal 510.

Pokétch developer

In the house on the cliff on the eastern side of town that is accessible through Rock Climb is a man that will give you a new Pokétch app based on the Nature of your lead Pokémon.

Also near this house is a free Thunderstone.

Julia's House

The right house in the upper right corner of the city belongs to a woman named Julia. Visit her daily to reach a Ribbon. The ribbon you receive is dependent on which day of the week it is.

Vista Lighthouse

The large building in the lower right area of the city is the Vista Lighthouse. First use the Dowsing Machine to find a hidden Zap Plate here. Inside talk to Volkner and you'll leave him convinced to accept your challenge at the Gym to deal with his boredom so he won't have to leave and challenge the Pokémon League.

Sunyshore Gym

Sunyshore City Gym
The Beacon Badge

You'll need to be a bit diverse in your type matching with both Grass and Ground-type Pokémon as Volkner's Pokémon are equipped with moves to counter their weaknesses. Having Ground-type Pokémon like Hippowdon, Quagsire, Mamoswine or Steelix will help. Volkner's Jolteon is equipped with Iron Tail to counter Mamoswine or ground-types with Rock-type characteristics. Besides the rock-types with their high defenses, Quagsire or Steelix could also bring it down. Raichu and Luxray are equipped to deal with their weakpoints but Quagsire should have no problems. Unless if you can take it out quickly, do not use Gliscor or other Pokémon that suffer a duel type weakness to Ice-types when facing Luxray. Volkner's star Pokémon Electvire has Fire Punch to counter Steelix or Grass Pokémon, but those Ground-types with Rock-type characteristics can easily beat it such as with Rhydon.

Once you beat Volkner he is so happy for this exciting battle, he give you the Beacon Badge which allow you to use Waterfall outside of battle and since you now have all eight badges then any Pokémon outside of battle will obey you. He'll also give you TM57 (Charge Beam) a damaging electric type move that has a 70% chance of raising the users Sp. Attack by one level. Now head to Jasmine again and Barry will appear and acknowledge his new purpose for getting stronger, pointing out he'll challenge you later when he does get stronger. Jasmine who is touched by this conversation will give you HM07 (Waterfall). While you can head north to the Pokémon League, let's make a quick pitstop to Mt. Coronet to pick up some important items.

Mt. Coronet South Side (third visit)

Backtrack your way back to the first area where you were first outside in the summit earlier and then use the eastern entrance that will take you to the lower part of Mt. Coronet 4F that was below the waterfall. Now that you have the ability to use the move Waterfall outside of battle you can climb the waterfall to find the Adamant Orb and the Lustrous Orb (as well as the Stone Plate that is hidden). You will need both Orbs for being able to catch Dialga and Palkia later.

Also if you return to the tunnel, since Team Galactic is gone now you can go through the door that was previously inaccessible that will take you to the entrance of Mt. Coronet's north area where you can find TM02 (Dragon Claw). Return to Sunyshore City and head north through the use of Surf to reach Route 223.

Route 223

This should be a straightforward water route since all you need are Surf, Waterfall, as well as both a Electric and Grass-type Pokémon. You can catch a Mantyke here but just remember you need a Remoraid in your party for it to evolve into Mantine. At the end you will be at the Pokémon League.

Pokémon League (south area)

Use Waterfall to climb the waterfall. Now enter the Pokémon Center and prepare your team, it is time to enter Victory Road.
