Cyndaquil is a small, bipedal mammalian Pokémon with bluish fur on top of its body and cream-colored fur on its underside. Its eyes are usually seen closed, and it has a long, thin snout. Its arms are short, but its legs are slightly more developed and have a single nail on each foot. On its back are four red circles that can erupt into flames. When the flames are burning, its back has the appearance of being covered in spines. | Cyndaquil is a small, bipedal mammalian Pokémon with bluish fur on top of its body and cream-colored fur on its underside. Cyndaquil is capable of defending itself using these flames, and the fire grows more powerful as it becomes angry or defensive. Cyndaquil's firepower is described as being tremendously powerful. However, if it is tired, the flames are not able to burn properly. It is usually timid by nature and often curls into a ball when intimidated. Due to this, Cyndaquil prefers staying hunched over. Though rare in the wild, it can be found living on List of Pokémon by habitat. It has been recently seen living in the Terarium of Blueberry Academy. | Cyndaquil is capable of defending itself using these flames, and the fire grows more powerful as it becomes angry or defensive. ====Major appearances====
=====Ash's Cyndaquil=====
Ash caught a Cyndaquil in Good 'Quil Hunting. During its early days on Ash's team, Cyndaquil would easily become tired out (e.g. waiting a while for the flames on its back to ignite so it could use Fire attacks). Eventually, Cyndaquil overcame its shortcomings. Following the end of his journey in Johto, Ash left Cyndaquil, along with the rest of his Johto team (save for Pikachu), at Professor Oak's lab when he set out for Hoenn. Later, Ash called Cyndaquil back into his party for the Lily of the Valley Conference in An Old Family Blend!. It evolved into Quilava after a battle with TRT's mecha.
=====Jimmy's Cyndaquil=====
Cyndaquil is Jimmy's first partner Pokémon that he received from Professor Elm. It evolved all the way to Typhlosion prior to The Legend of Thunder!.
=====Dawn's Cyndaquil=====
In An Egg Scramble!, Dawn defeated Lyra in a battle, winning an Egg. Shortly after, the Egg hatched into a Cyndaquil. It later evolved into a Quilava in DPS01.
=====Other===== | |||
Cyndaquil debuted in Don't Touch That 'dile, where it was one of the three first partner Pokémon Professor Elm had to give out at his lab.
In Arceus and the Jewel of Life, a Cyndaquil assisted Pikachu and Spiky-eared Pichu in the distant past.
In Finding a Legend!, Chad used a Cyndaquil and Fearow to create a fake Ho-Oh for his grandfather Jaye. However, their ruse was exposed when Pikachu attacked it with Thunderbolt. Cyndaquil later accompanied its Trainer to the top of the Bell Tower.
In The Gates of Warp!, Alternate World Dawn's Quilava devolved into Cyndaquil in a flashback due to Dialga's influence.
In The Arceus Chronicles (Part 1), Goh temporarily caught a Cyndaquil while visiting a Sinnoh Fest in Canalave City.
====Minor appearances====
In Queen of the Serpentine!, a Cyndaquil was one of Lucy's pets.
A Cyndaquil appeared in Classroom Training!, under the ownership of the Snowpoint Trainers' School.
In An Old Family Blend!, a Trainer's Cyndaquil was seen during the Lily of the Valley Conference.
In Meloetta's Moonlight Serenade, a Cyndaquil watched Meloetta's concert.
In A Crowning Moment of Truth!, four Trainers' Cyndaquil attended the Wela Fire Festival.
A Trainer's Cyndaquil appeared in The Power of Us. Callahan also caught one during the Pokémon Catch Race.
In Battling on the Wing!, a Trainer's Cyndaquil was a member of the Manalo Conference audience.
A Trainer's Cyndaquil appeared in Fiery Surprises! and From Z to Shining Z!.
A Cyndaquil appeared in a fantasy alongside the other first partner Pokémon in Getting More Than You Battled For!.
A Cyndaquil appeared in The Pendant That Starts It All (Part One), under the ownership of a student of Indigo Academy. Another appeared during a flashback.
A Student's Cyndaquil appeared in an image in HZ046.

Cyndaquil (Japanese: ヒノアラシ Hinoarashi) is a Fire-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.
It evolves into Quilava starting at level 14, which evolves into Typhlosion starting at level 36.
In Hisui, it evolves into Quilava starting at level 17, which evolves into Hisuian Typhlosion starting at level 36.
Along with Chikorita and Totodile, Cyndaquil is one of the three first partner Pokémon of Johto available at the beginning of Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver.
Cyndaquil is also one of the three first partner Pokémon of Hisui in Pokémon Legends: Arceus, alongside Rowlet and Oshawott.
Biology
Cyndaquil is a small, bipedal mammalian Pokémon with bluish fur on top of its body and cream-colored fur on its underside. Its eyes are usually seen closed, and it has a long, thin snout. Its arms are short, but its legs are slightly more developed and have a single nail on each foot. On its back are four red circles that can erupt into flames. When the flames are burning, its back has the appearance of being covered in spines.
Though rare in the wild, it can be found living on grasslands. It has been recently seen living in the Terarium of Blueberry Academy. As mentioned in Pokémon Sleep, Cyndaquil is known to usually sleep curled up.[1] On rare occasions, it will spout flames from its back while sleeping.
Evolution
Cyndaquil evolves into Quilava, which evolves into Typhlosion.
In Hisui, it evolves into Quilava, which evolves into Hisuian Typhlosion.

Major appearances
Ash's Cyndaquil
Ash caught a Cyndaquil in Good 'Quil Hunting. During its early days on Ash's team, Cyndaquil would easily become tired out (e.g. waiting a while for the flames on its back to ignite so it could use Fire-type attacks). It evolved into Quilava after a battle with Team Rocket's mecha.
Jimmy's Cyndaquil
Cyndaquil is Jimmy's first partner Pokémon that he received from Professor Elm. It evolved all the way to Typhlosion prior to The Legend of Thunder!.
Dawn's Cyndaquil
In An Egg Scramble!, Dawn defeated Lyra in a battle, winning an Egg. Shortly after, the Egg hatched into a Cyndaquil. It later evolved into a Quilava in DPS01.

Trivia
- Cyndaquil, Charmander, and their respective evolutionary lines have exactly the same base stats in the same distribution.
- The game intro for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver features a sprite of Cyndaquil that is slightly different from the one used in the actual game (this is most noticeable in the eyes). This sprite is not used anywhere else.
- Cyndaquil's Blueberry Pokédex Image features a Cyndaquil battling a Skarmory. This references the episode Hot Matches!, in which Ash's Cyndaquil battled a Trainer's Skarmory.
- Cyndaquil was featured in the seventh episode of Beyond the Pokédex series.
- Cyndaquil is the Pokémon available in most core series games as the player's first Pokémon, with a total of 6 games.
- Cyndaquil is the only first partner Pokémon with eyes usually closed.
Origin
Cyndaquil appears to be based on an echidna with traits of tenrecs, such as its long snout and having little to no tail. The shape of its closed eyes resemble those of baby porcupines, as well as its fire, when lit, resembles the quills of the same animal. Cyndaquil could also be based on the Chinese mythological creature called Hinezumi, the same as Cyndaquil's species name in Japanese, which is a fire mouse that lives in volcanoes.
Name origin
Cyndaquil may be a combination of cinder (ashes) and quill (referring to needle-like hairs).
Hinoarashi may be a combination of 火 hi (fire) and ヤマアラシ (山荒) yama-arashi (porcupine). It can be taken to mean 火の嵐 hi no arashi (storm of fire).
