(→‎Photo booth: Cleaned it up a bit and added the Union Room bit. Notably, one of the reasonings for you not being able to do so is because they apparently don't allow people wearing black in? Thankfully Unova is less strict because you can enter with the appearance of a Roughneck there. Why did i make this so long.)

The Goldenrod Tunnel (Japanese: コガネちかつうろ Kogane Tunnel) is a shopping district stretching below Goldenrod City. This path contains a barber shop, herb shop, and a shop selling items which are simply resold for profit; however, the shops that are open at any given time depend on the day. Trainers also litter this path, and there is an entrance to the basement of the Goldenrod Department Store, initially occupied by Team Rocket. Once unlocking the entryway to the Department Store and battling various Trainers, the player will encounter a series of "switches" labeled "SWITCH 1", "SWITCH 2", and "SWITCH 3". In order to get through the obvious maze, the switches must be turned on in a sequence. While turning them on, pronounced panels of the walls will disappear. Once getting through the maze, there is another switch labeled "EMERGENCY". This switch is used for escape when the player is coming from the basement. Activating this switch opens all the necessary panels to get through the maze, coming from the other side.

Pokémon Salon
Haircut brothers
Once a day when the shop is open, the player may have one of the brothers give a Pokémon a haircut. This increases the Pokémon's friendship. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it also raises the Pokémon's Beauty stat.

The younger of the Haircut brothers is cheaper at PDollar300, but his service is often less satisfactory. However, the younger brother has a chance of occasionally increasing a Pokémon's friendship to a greater degree than the older brother is capable of. The older brother is more reliable but more expensive at PDollar500.

Bargain shop
On Monday mornings, a man sells a set of valuable items for a discount. Each item can only be purchased once per week. The man can still sell his items on other mornings provided the player has saved in front of him and does not walk away and remove him from the screen. The prices here are approximately 10% cheaper than the items' normal sell prices.

Kanpo
Kanpo (Japanese: カンポーや Kampo Medicine Store) is a shop that sells herbal medicine.

The name of the herb shop is mentioned in dialogue in the Japanese versions of the games, but was omitted from the English versions. This store is named Kanpo in English, per the Pokémon Gold and Silver: Official Nintendo Player's Guide and Pokémon Crystal: Official Nintendo Player's Guide.

Goldenrod Department Store basement
The Goldenrod Department Store's basement opens up onto the Goldenrod Tunnel. Although the basement is accessible from the main store right from the start, the back entrance is initially occupied by Team Rocket and cannot be accessed until later. Petrel hides the Goldenrod Radio Tower Director here while he impersonates him but will give the player the Basement Key upon being defeated. Inside, there are Team Rocket Grunts and Silver to battle and a series of switches to turn ON/OFF in order to navigate through the basement completely.

Some rare items can be found in this section of the Department Store's basement.

Photo booth
In HeartGold and SoulSilver, there is a photo booth at the northern end of the Tunnel. Trainers can dress up and photograph their own Pokémon using Accessories, and a man offers to take photographs of Trainers with their on-hand party. This photo opportunity is unique, as players can wear themselves a Team Rocket Grunt costume.

During Team Rocket's invasion of the Goldenrod Radio Tower, the player must wear this uniform as a disguise to enter the Radio Tower. They cannot not battle in this costume nor can they leave Goldenrod City or use multiplayer features such as the Union Room while wearing it.

Photo gallery
The saved photo of a dressed-up Pokémon from the photo booth is displayed in the photo gallery. In addition, photos from up to ten players that have mixed records with will also have their photos displayed here.

A Hiker appears in the photo gallery who runs an Accessory drawing for PDollar100. For each entry, the player has a 6/101 (5.941%) chance of not winning anything at all. Otherwise, the game will try to reward the player with a randomly selected Accessory, with a separate 5/101 (4.950%) chance of also receiving a randomly selected Backdrop.

If the player already has the maximum amount of that particular Accessory, the player will not receive any Accessories for that entry, but may still receive a Backdrop. This means that the effective chance of winning another Accessory gets lower as the pool is exhausted, reaching a minimum of 2.412% <!--95/101 * 1/39--> for the last Accessory. By contrast, because the game will always select a Backdrop the player has not yet obtained, the chance of receiving another Backdrop remains constant until all of them have been obtained.

On average, it takes about 300 entries to get all of the possible Accessories and Backdrops. Once they have all been obtained, the Hiker will compliment the player on their collection, and no longer offer the player the option to enter the raffle.

The reward pool consists of the following 39 Accessories and 14 Backdrops.

Pokémon world locations

The Goldenrod Tunnel (Japanese: コガネちかつうろ Kogane Tunnel), known as the Underground (Japanese: ちかつうろ Underground Path) in Generation II, is a shopping district stretching below Goldenrod City. The shops that are open in the Tunnel depend on the days of the week and, in some cases, the time of day.

Shops

Goldenrod Tunnel contains a barber shop, a Bargain Shop that sells valuable items, and an Herb Shop. Each shop has set hours of operation and all three are never open at the same time.

Day Pokémon Salon Bargain shop Herb shop
Monday Open mornings
Tuesday Older brother
Wednesday Younger brother
Thursday Older brother
Friday Younger brother
Saturday Older brother Open
Sunday Younger brother Open

Pokémon Salon

Main article: Haircut brothers

Once a day when the shop is open, the player may have one of the brothers give a Pokémon a haircut. This increases the Pokémon's friendship. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, it also raises the Pokémon's Beauty stat.

The younger of the Haircut brothers is cheaper at $300, but his service is often less satisfactory. However, the younger brother has a chance of occasionally increasing a Pokémon's friendship to a greater degree than the older brother is capable of. The older brother is more reliable but more expensive at $500.

Bargain shop

Herb shop

Photo booth

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, there is a photo booth at the northern end of the Tunnel.

A Hiker appears in the photo gallery who runs an Accessory drawing for $100.

This means that the effective chance of winning another Accessory gets lower as the pool is exhausted, reaching a minimum of 2.412% for the last Accessory.
