Twineedle (Japanese: ダブルニードル Double Needle) is a damage-dealing Bug multi-hit move introduced in Generation I. Prior to Generation V, it was Beedrill's signature move.

Effect
Effect
Generation I
Generation I
Twineedle inflicts damage, and has a 20% chance of poisoning the target. Twineedle hits twice per use. Although technically only the first hit can critical hit, each hit per use will do the same amount of damage.
Twineedle inflicts damage, hitting the target twice per use. The second strike has a 20% chance of poisoning the target, unless the target is Poison. Although only the first strike can be a critical hit, the second one will deal the same amount of damage.

Twineedle will end immediately if it breaks a Substitute. Bide and Counter will only acknowledge one hit of this move.
Twineedle will end immediately if the first strike breaks a substitute. Bide and Counter will only acknowledge the second strike of this move.

Generation II
Generation II
Same as Generation I, except now it can poison Steel- and Poison Pokémon. Also, all hits will do damage independently, consequently enabling any of them to be critical.
Each strike now does damage independently, and either of them can be a critical hit.

Twineedle can poison Steel Pokémon.

Twineedle will now hit again if the first strike breaks a substitute. If the first strike breaks a substitute, the second strike can poison the target.
If the user is holding a King's Rock, the final strike has a chance to cause the target to flinch.

Generation III
Generation III
Same as Generation II, but it cannot poison Steel- and Poison Pokémon.
Twineedle can no longer poison Steel-type Pokémon.

Twineedle is no longer affected by King's Rock.

Generation IV
Generation IV
Same as Generation III, except it will continue attacking after a Substitute is broken.
Both of Twineedle's strikes now have an independent 20% chance of poisoning the target (producing a 36% chance of poisoning the target overall).

Generation V
Generation V to VII
Unlike previous generations, if Focus Sash, Focus Band, or Sturdy activate before the last hit is dealt, the following hit will cause the defending Pokémon to faint. Each hit will also cause Weak Armor to activate.
If a Focus Sash activates before the last strike is dealt, the following strike will cause the defending Pokémon to faint. A Focus Band can still activate repeatedly to prevent fainting, but each chance is independent. Sturdy will activate with each hit if the defending Pokémon has a maximum HP of 1.

If the target has Weak Armor or Stamina, each strike will activate it.

If the user is holding a King's Rock or Razor Fang, each consecutive hit has an equal chance to cause the target to flinch.

Twineedle is now affected by King's Rock.

Generation VIII onwards
Twineedle cannot be selected in a battle.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
Twineedle inflicts damage, hitting the target 2 times per use. Each hit has a separate accuracy check, though the move will continue even when a hit fails. Twineedle may also leave the enemy Status condition (Mystery Dungeon). Prior to Super Mystery Dungeon, if a targeted Pokémon faints in middle of the attack, the remaining projectile will be able to hit a new target. The move's critical hit rate is reduced (2% in the Rescue Team, Explorers and Adventure Squad series).

Trivia
Trivia
*Twineedle is the only non-Poison move that can poison under normal conditions.
* In Generation II only, Twineedle is the only move that can poison a Steel Pokémon. This is because Steel-type Pokémon are only coded to be immune to Poison moves.
*Twineedle is the only move that can poison a Steel Pokémon, as it is a Bug-type move instead of a Poison-type move. However, this only works in Generation II.
*Shellder's evolutionary line are the only non Bug-type Pokémon able to learn Twineedle.

Twineedle (Japanese: ダブルニードル Double Needle) is a damage-dealing Bug-type multistrike move introduced in Generation I. Prior to Generation V, it was the signature move of Beedrill.

Effect

Generation I

Twineedle inflicts damage, hitting the target twice per use. The second strike has a 20% chance of poisoning the target, unless the target is Poison-type. Although only the first strike can be a critical hit, the second one will deal the same amount of damage.

Twineedle will end immediately if the first strike breaks a substitute. Bide and Counter will only acknowledge the second strike of this move.

Generation II

Each strike now does damage independently, and either of them can be a critical hit.

Twineedle can poison Steel-type Pokémon.

Twineedle will now hit again if the first strike breaks a substitute. If the first strike breaks a substitute, the second strike can poison the target.

If the user is holding a King's Rock, the final strike has a chance to cause the target to flinch.

Generation III

Twineedle can no longer poison Steel-type Pokémon.

Twineedle is no longer affected by King's Rock.

Generation IV

Both of Twineedle's strikes now have an independent 20% chance of poisoning the target (producing a 36% chance of poisoning the target overall).

Generation V to VII

Twineedle may also leave the enemy poisoned. Prior to Super Mystery Dungeon, if a targeted Pokémon faints in middle of the attack, the remaining projectile will be able to hit a new target. The move's critical hit rate is reduced (2% in the Rescue Team, Explorers and Adventure Squad series).

Trivia

 • In Generation II only, Twineedle is the only move that can poison a Steel-type Pokémon. This is because Steel-type Pokémon are only coded to be immune to Poison-type moves.
