Natural objects (Japanese: 自然物 natural objects) are a game mechanic introduced in X and Y. In both wild and Trainer battles, they can appear behind the opponent. These objects can be hit by specific moves that would hit multiple Pokémon (even if used during a single battle). If they are hit, they break or drop Berries and remain that way until the end of the battle, when the player will pick up one item.

If a natural object can appear, a platform will be visible behind the opponent; any natural object will appear on this platform. Only one natural object can appear at a time, and once it is broken it remains broken until the end of the battle.

If a natural object can appear in an area, a platform will be visible behind the opponent. Natural objects will appear on this platform, with only one appearing at a time in any battle. Natural objects cannot appear while surfing, but they may appear while fishing so long as the player is not surfing.

The item is picked up after the player's Pokémon have gained experience from defeating the last Pokémon. The player will not be able to pick up the item if they lose, run, or catch the Pokémon.
Most areas where natural objects can appear have three objects that may appear. In these areas, natural objects will appear approximately 50% of the time. In areas where less than three natural objects can appear, natural objects will appear proportionally less often.

These objects disappear temporarily while a Moves that change terrain is in effect and cannot be destroyed until its effect fades. The objects will not be destroyed unless the move affects at least one Pokémon.
If a move does not hit at least one Pokémon, it cannot destroy a natural object. Also, if there is a terrain present, natural objects will temporarily disappear and will not be able to be affected until it dissipates.

Natural objects will never appear while surfing, and while they sometimes can appear while fishing, they will not appear if fishing while surfing.

If the player loses, runs from the battle, or catches a Pokémon, they will not be able to pick up an item from any broken natural object.

Every location that has a natural object is classified as a certain type of area. Each object only appears in one type of area, and most types of areas have two objects that appear commonly and one object that appears rarely.
Every location where natural objects may appear is classified as a certain type of area. Certain locations (such as 18) may be divided into two different areas where different natural objects may appear. Every natural object only appears in one type of area.

A common natural object has approximately a 20% chance of appearing in a battle, while a rare natural object has a 10% chance of appearing. This means that in areas with the maximum of three natural objects, there is a 50% chance of finding no natural object in a battle.

The name currently in use is a fan translation of the Japanese name.
An encounter where a natural object is present

Natural objects (Japanese: 自然物 natural objects) are a game mechanic in Pokémon X and Y. In many areas, it is possible for a natural object to appear behind an opponent in a wild or Trainer battle. These objects can be hit by certain moves that can target multiple Pokémon. If the object is hit, it will break or drop Berries and remain in that state until the end of the battle, when the player will pick up an item in the aftermath of the battle.

A yellow Berry tree after dropping its Berries

If a natural object can appear in an area, a platform will be visible behind the opponent. Natural objects will appear on this platform, with only one appearing at a time in any battle. Natural objects cannot appear while surfing, but they may appear while fishing so long as the player is not surfing.

Most areas where natural objects can appear have three objects that may appear. In these areas, natural objects will appear approximately 50% of the time. In areas where less than three natural objects can appear, natural objects will appear proportionally less often.

If a move does not hit at least one Pokémon, it cannot destroy a natural object. Also, if there is a terrain present, natural objects will temporarily disappear and will not be able to be affected until it dissipates.

If the player loses, runs from the battle, or catches a Pokémon, they will not be able to pick up an item from any broken natural object.

Location sets

Every location where natural objects may appear is classified as a certain type of area. Certain locations (such as Route 18) may be divided into two different areas where different natural objects may appear. Every natural object only appears in one type of area.

A common natural object has approximately a 20% chance of appearing in a battle, while a rare natural object has a 10% chance of appearing. This means that in areas with the maximum of three natural objects, there is a 50% chance of finding no natural object in a battle.
