Bombirdier is a white avian Pokémon resembling a stork. It has black slanted eyes with black eyeliner-like markings around them, a long reddish pink beak with a rounded bump on the tip, and a small fan-like crest on the back of its head. It has a long neck and tall, thin, reddish pink legs, with three toes facing forward and one toe facing backward on each foot. Its claws are black, as are the feathers on the tips of its wings, on its lower body, and on the inside of its tail, which has a squared end.

Hanging from Bombirdier's chest is a long white apron made of its own shed feathers, which droops down past its legs. When flying, Bombirdier holds the end of this apron in its beak. It uses the apron to gather food, such as Basculin, and bring them to its nest. Bombirdier also gathers various objects such as rocks in its apron, which it then drops from high places for fun. It particularly enjoys dropping objects that cause loud noises. In Generation IX, Parting Shot is its signature move.

* Scarlet and Violet: Open Sky Titan, Bombidier is a minor character and a boss in the games. It became a Titan Pokémon after consuming some Herba Mystica.
** The player and Arven eventually found it in West Province (Area One) to find the Herba Mystica it guards and defeated it, forcing it to flee. After both took its Herba Mystica, Bombirdier became a normal-sized Pokémon once again. After this, it can be rematched in its original location, and will have the Titan Mark when captured.

Bombirdier's Shiny coloration resembles the Oriental stork, with its grey beak and red eye markings. In Japanese folklore, the Oriental stork is often mistaken for the Crane (bird), and depicted atop pine trees in traditional Japanese art. In fact, arboreal locomotion is only observed in storks, while no crane species except Balearica nests or roosts on trees. The crest on Bombirdier could be based on that of crowned cranes.

Bombirdier could also take inspiration from the Fiat BR.20 Cicogna, an Italian medium bomber plane nicknamed after the stork, which was first and mainly used for the Spanish Civil War.

Bombirdier (Japanese: オトシドリ Otoshidori) is a dual-type Flying/Dark Pokémon introduced in Generation IX.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Bombirdier is the only known Pokémon that can have Rocky Payload as an Ability.

Titan Pokémon

A giant Bombirdier, known as the Open Sky Titan, is one of the Titan Pokémon found in Paldea. It mainly resides near a moutain in West Province (Area One) where it feeds on Bitter Herba Mystica inside a hidden cave.

Trivia

Origin

Bombirdier appears to be based on a stork, specifically the white stork. In European folklore, white storks are believed to be responsible for delivering babies to new parents by dropping them down chimneys. Bombirdier's design plays with this trope: while its apron and black-and-white plumage bring to mind the image of a nanny, it drops various objects to attack instead.

Bombirdier's Shiny coloration resembles the Oriental stork, with its grey beak and red eye markings. In Japanese folklore, the Oriental stork is often mistaken for the crane, and depicted atop pine trees in traditional Japanese art. In fact, this behaviour is only observed in storks, while no crane species except crowned cranes nests or roosts on trees. The crest on Bombirdier could be based on that of crowned cranes.

Bombirdier's tool usage also bears semblance to the habit of some Old World vultures that drop rocks and other objects in order to crack them open. Its black facial markings may specifically pull from the bearded vulture, and its crest may reference the Egyptian vulture, both species that use this technique.

Name origin

Bombirdier may be a combination of bombardier and bird.

Otoshidori may be a combination of 落とし otoshi (drop) and 鳥 tori (bird).
