Mew | ==History and myths==
Mew and Mewtwo are introduced in Generation I, where reports found in Cinnabar Island's Pokémon Mansion note scientific expeditions that sighted Mew in Guyana, South America, the place where it was first discovered. It was worshiped for its protection by ancient people who lived there. This discovery of Mew would eventually lead to the creation of Mewtwo.
Mewtwo was created by altering the DNA of a Mew embryo. For a time, Mewtwo was held and studied in the Pokémon Mansion of Cinnabar Island. A scientist named Dr. Fuji performed gene-splicing experiments on Mewtwo that made it both vicious and extremely powerful. Eventually, Mewtwo broke free of the mansion, destroying it in the process, and fled. Mewtwo then chose to reside in the Cerulean Cave, a cave that only Trainers who have proven their skill at the Indigo Plateau can enter.

Mewtwo is the Genetic Pokémon, found in Cerulean Cave in any of the Generation I games, FireRed and LeafGreen and HeartGold and SoulSilver. It can also be found in X and Y.
Mewtwo's stats are more attack oriented than its counterpart, having an additional 80 to its base stat total. This is further boosted with an additional 100 base stats from either of its Mega Evolutions. Mewtwo's signature move, Psystrike inflicts physical damage. Despite being classified as a special move, this move calculates damage using the user's Special Attack and the opponent's Defense stat (similar to Psyshock and Secret Sword). Despite targeting the opponent's Defense stat, the move's damage is unaffected by Reflect and it will not activate Counter; instead, it is affected by Light Screen and activates Mirror Coat.

Mewtwo soon cloned all their Pokémon, as Mew followed Team Rocket into the main part of the island so it could stop Mewtwo from destroying the world. Soon a battle started between natural born and cloned Pokémon. However, before Mewtwo could defeat the Trainers and move out into the world, Mew appeared. Mew and Mewtwo fought at length, ceasing only when Ash—exasperated over the drawn-out and fruitless battling—ran into the fray and was caught in their crossfire, which turned his body to stone. After Ash was revived by the tears of the nearby Pokémon, clone and original alike, Mewtwo experienced a change of heart and no longer sought to conquer the world. The subject of this article has no official name. The name currently in use is a fan designator; see below for more information. |
The Mew duo is a fan term for the duo of a Mythical and a Legendary Pokémon; Mew and Mewtwo. Due to possessing the same DNA, they share a type, Psychic. They reside in the Kanto region.
Overview
In the games, Mew and Mewtwo are usually treated as unrelated Pokémon, with Mewtwo's stats, level up moves, and treatment in the Pokémon Stadium series being closer to that of the Tower duo, while Mew's are closer to that of Celebi. The duo has often been paired together across all media.[1][2] Mew and Mewtwo have been described as rivals who fight each other to see who would win.[3]
In the English version of Mewtwo Strikes Back, Mew embodied innocence and joy to contrast with Mewtwo's cynicism and contempt developed from the course of its early life experiences. However in the Japanese version, Mew becomes a foil to Mewtwo's status as a "copy" and the two fight to determine whether originals or clones are superior. It takes the sacrifice of Ash Ketchum to sway Mewtwo's contempt and end the conflict between Mew and Mewtwo.
History and myths

Mew, the New Species Pokémon, originated in Generation I, where it can be encountered through a glitch in Red and Blue.
Mew's stats are more balanced, having an equal 100 to each of its stats. Mew is notable for its unique ability to learn every Technical Machine, Hidden Machine, Technical Record, and Move Tutor move, except those exclusive to a particular Pokémon or group of Pokémon.
Mewtwo

- Main article: Mewtwo (Pokémon)
Pokémon Red, Blue and Yellow
Mewtwo can be found in the deepest part of the Cerulean Cave. The player is only allowed to enter the Cave after entering the Hall of Fame at least once.
Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen
Mewtwo can still be found in the deepest part of the Cerulean Cave. However the player must further prove themselves before entering the cave, which is done by completing the quest on Sevii Islands and restoring the Network Machine of the Pokémon Network Center to operational status.
Pokémon Emerald
Through an event using the Old Sea Map, Mew can be encountered on Faraway Island, where it will hide from the player within the tall grass.
Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum
Mew can be transferred from My Pokémon Ranch. To obtain Mew in My Pokémon Ranch, the player needs to store 999 Pokémon at Hayley's Ranch, after which she will trade her Mew for a Pokémon Egg. In the Japanese version of Pokémon Platinum, this requires an update.
Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver
Unlike their original counterparts, Cerulean Cave has been rebuilt and Mewtwo can once again be found inside. An NPC blocks the entrance until the player has obtained all eight Kanto Gym Badges.
Pokémon X and Y
Mewtwo can be found in the Unknown Dungeon in the Pokémon Village. It stands in the center and can be battled. After it is captured, its Mega Stone, respective to the version being played, will be automatically claimed. If it is not captured, the player may battle it again after entering the Hall of Fame at least once.
Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon
Mewtwo can be found in the Ultra Space Wilds by following a green Ultra Wormhole to the Rocky World during the Ultra Warp Ride.
Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl
Mew can be obtained as a gift from an elderly woman at Floaroma Town, provided there is save data for Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee! on the player's Nintendo Switch. Mewtwo can be encountered by inserting the Genome Slate in the Genome Room at Ramanas Park after capturing the legendary giants, the Legendary beasts or legendary birds, and the Eon duo.
Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Mew and Mewtwo can be transferred into the games through Pokémon HOME. The duo was also made available in a limited Poké Portal News event called Get Mew & Mewtwo!. Mew was unlockable through the Mystery Gift option from August 8, 2023 to September 18, 2023. The password needed for the Mew event was GETY0URMEW. Additionally, Mewtwo was available to encounter in a limited Tera Raid Battle event from August 31 to September 17, 2023. During the event, Mewtwo can be caught once per save file.

Mew and Mewtwo first appeared in Mewtwo Strikes Back, where Mew was tracked by scientist, but was able to hide from them. Eventually Team Rocket scientist managed to create Mewtwo by extracting DNA from Mew's eyelash. As a child, Mewtwo met and befriended a group of clones, but was the only one who survived the cloning process due to harboring Mew's eternal life force. After fully maturing, Mewtwo rebelled against his creators after discovering they only saw him as a mere tool.
Sometime later, Mewtwo on New Island issued a challenge to several strong Pokémon Trainers, including Ash Ketchum. It used its powers to create a storm that would serve as a test to see who could make it to the island. Only a handful of Trainers decided to brave the storm and arrive, including Ash and his friends. Upon revealing itself, Mewtwo challenged the Trainers with its clone Pokémon—Venusaur, Blastoise, and Charizard—to prove its superiority to human Trainers and the superiority of cloned Pokémon in comparison to trained Pokémon. As this goes on Mew came to New Island while the first partner Pokémon clones were battling.
Mewtwo reasoned that it would be best if no one remembered the events that had transpired, so it erased the memories of all the people and Pokémon and transported everyone but Team Rocket back to the mainland. In a fierce battle that wiped out almost all of Red's Pokémon, Mewtwo was finally defeated by Red's Charizard after it Mega Evolved into Mega Charizard X. Red then proceeded to capture Mewtwo, making his collection of the 150 known Pokémon complete. As Red, Blue and Prof. Oak, talk about the former capturing Mewtwo, Red realizes that Mewtwo was created from a Pokémon named Mew, which means that there is still one more Pokémon out there for him to catch. Unnoticed by anyone, a Mew suddenly appears outside of the window. Apparently having heard Red's words, it smiles teasingly before flying away.

Red, Green & Blue arc
Mew debuted in A Glimpse of the Glow where Red and Blue tried to catch it but failed. It was soon tracked down by Team Rocket who planned on capturing it. A disc containing some of its DNA was obtained and was used in the creation of Mewtwo. It was first seen in Tauros the Tyrant, incomplete and floating in a tube when Red infiltrated Team Rocket headquarters. Later as Red and Green are cornered by several Team Rocket Grunts, Mew uses its psychic powers to stop them and escapes.
Much later as Mewtwo was fully completed by the time of And Mewtwo Too?!, where it started to rampage near Cerulean City. Blaine is revealed to be the Team Rocket scientist who not only created Mewtwo, added his own human DNA to it to finish its creation when Mew's cells weren't enough. Together, they battled with Mewtwo, which eventually ended in its capture via Master Ball in And Mewtwo... Three!.
Yellow arc
Mewtwo, having forged a bond with Blaine, assisted him in fighting against Lance on Cerise Island. However, when the battle started to put a strain on Blaine's arm, Mewtwo chose to return to its Master Ball, which Yellow briefly took care of afterwards.
Gold, Silver & Crystal arc
After Entei had helped Blaine cure his disease, the link between him and Mewtwo was severed and allowed it to set off on its own.
FireRed & LeafGreen arc
Mewtwo helped the Kanto Pokédex holders and Silver battle against Team Rocket and Deoxys. When the Team Rocket airship was about to crash into Vermilion City, Mew appeared again after having left Faraway Island and stopped the ship with its psychic powers, leaving again after Mewtwo had noticed it. When a severely-injured Sird returned, the Pokédex holders and Mewtwo stopped her from capturing Deoxys, but the collision between Mewtwo and the beam emerging from Sird's Poké Ball caused the Pokédex holders to be turned to stone.
Diamond & Pearl arc
Sird revealed that Mewtwo had chased her down following the aforementioned encounter, but eventually lost track of her.
X & Y arc
Mewtwo was seen sitting inside the Unknown Dungeon in Pokémon Village. It soon engaged in a battle against Lysandre's Pokémon and Mega Evolved into Mega Mewtwo Y. It was soon revealed that Mewtwo and Blaine had reunited, with their unique bond even allowing Mewtwo to Mega Evolve again into Mega Mewtwo X after switching its Mega Stone. It also fought against Zygarde, which was under Team Flare's control.

In the TCG
Mew and Mewtwo both receive cards in the Trading Card Game. Befitting how they are encountered in the games, Mewtwo's first card was Base Set Mewtwo, while Mew's first card was Wizards Black Star Promo Mew and therefore required going off the beaten path to obtain. Also befitting their standard relationship, Mewtwo and Mew often do not have any relation to each other except for their usual identities of Mewtwo being designed for combat and Mew being a tricky and flighty Pokémon. Unlike other groups of Pokémon, no card has been released that refers to the other member by name. They also do not necessarily appear in the same expansions, but often do anyway in sets that focus on the Kanto Pokédex such as Evolutions and 151. During the Sword & Shield Series, both Pokémon were printed as different types of Pokémon. Mew received a Pokémon VMAX card, Mew VMAX, while Mewtwo was printed as a Pokémon VSTAR, Mewtwo VSTAR and as a Pokémon V-UNION, Mewtwo V-UNION.
Some cards have been released that play up the connection between Mewtwo and Mew. Darkness Ablaze Mew V has the attack X Ball, which is an attack iconically known for its appearance as the main attack of Next Destinies Mewtwo-EX. However, the main card showing their relationship is Mewtwo & Mew-GX.
Mewtwo & Mew-GX is a TAG TEAM card, showing both the Genetic Pokémon and the New Species Pokémon working together. The art for the regular print shows them breaking out of a glass container. The artist for the card, Mitsuhiro Arita, suggests that the container was the same one seen on Mewtwo-GX's Secret Shining Holo printing, and that Mew helped Mewtwo escape.[4] The card's Ability, Perfection, is based on Mew's frequent attack copying effects and allows Mewtwo & Mew-GX to use the attacks of any Pokémon-EX or Pokémon-GX that their owner has on the Bench or in the discard pile. Meanwhile their GX attack, Miraculous Duo-GX, is based on Mewtwo's frequent healing effects and can heal all damage that all of its owners Pokémon has taken.
A SM Black Star Promo printing of the card shows alternate artwork of Mewtwo being annoyed by Mew's laughter.
