Torkoal (Japanese: コータス Cotoise) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.
It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.
Biology
Physiology
Torkoal are small, tortoise-like Pokémon with large black rock-like shells with "holes" that glow with a red warmth. Their skin is a reddish brown in color with gray-black bands on their legs and neck. They have long necks and their eyes seem permanently closed. They are usually depicted blowing out smoke from their nostrils and the tops of their backs.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Like many fire Pokémon, it has a place inside its body where it keeps its fire. This system is powered by burning coal. Torkoal are notably more physically defensive than most other fire types, which is further boosted by supportive moves like Yawn, Stealth Rock, Rapid Spin, and Will-O-Wisp.
Behavior
Torkoal are usually calm if left undisturbed. If angered, they belch black smoke from the burning coal inside their shells and flee.
Habitat
Torkoal lives in mountains near volcanoes in search of coal.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food

Trivia
- Despite being based on a tortoise, it is unable to breed with other tortoise and turtle Pokémon like Blastoise or Torterra, since it belongs to a different egg group.
- Torkoal, along with Kuitaran, are only non-legendary Template:Type2 that have no evolutionary relatives.
- Coincidentally, both of them have White Smoke as one of their ability.
- Torkoal has the highest Defense of all Fire-types.
- Although it has the lowest Speed of all fully evolved Fire-types and is tied with Slugma and Hitomoshi for the lowest Speed of all Fire-types.
- Although it is said to belch black smoke, its artwork and sprites shows Torkoal blowing white smoke which would agree with its ability, White Smoke
- Black smoke can be seen in console games and to a lesser extent in Torkoal's use of the move SmokeScreen.
- In Overjoyed!, Ash's Torkoal blows out black smoke after using body slam on Brandon's Registeel.
Origin
Torkoal is essentially a tortoise with a furnace within its shell.
Name origin
Torkoal's name is a combination of tortoise or torch and coal.
Cotoise appears to also be a combination of these words, albeit in a different order.
