Trivia
- Despite being based on a tortoise, it is unable to breed with other tortoise and turtle Pokémon like Blastoise or Torterra, since it belongs to a different Egg Group.
- Torkoal, along with Heatmor, are the only non-legendary Fire-type Pokémon that have no evolutionary relatives.
- Coincidentally, both of them have White Smoke as one of their Abilities.
- Torkoal has the highest Defense of all Fire-types.
- It is tied with Slugma and Litwick for the lowest Speed of all Fire-types.
- Although it is said to belch black smoke, its artwork and sprites shows Torkoal blowing white smoke which would agree with its Ability, White Smoke.
- Black smoke can be seen in console games and to a lesser extent in Torkoal's use of the move SmokeScreen.
Origin
Torkoal is essentially a Giant tortoise with a furnace or a Kitchen stove with four openings within its shell.
Name origin
Torkoal is a combination of tortoise or torch and coal.
Cotoise may be a combination of coal and tortoise.
