Ingrain (Japanese: ねをはる Extend Roots) is a non-damaging Grass-type move introduced in Generation III.
Effect
This move effect may be in need of research. Reason: Confirm if the rooted Pokémon can switch out before an opponent would send out their next Pokémon. Does this change in different Generations? You can discuss this on the talk page. |
The user plants roots in the ground, allowing it to restore 1/16th of its maximum HP at the end of every turn. This roots the user firmly in place, preventing it from escaping or switching out. If a rooted Pokémon is holding a Big Root, the amount of HP restored is increased by 30%.
Red Card and moves that switch the target out (such as Roar and Whirlwind) cannot force a rooted Pokémon to switch out.
A rooted Pokémon can still switch when:
- it uses one of the moves that switch the user out (such as Baton Pass or U-turn)
- it holds a Shed Shell or Smoke Ball
- the effect of the held Eject Button is activated
- its Trainer uses an escape item
- the opponent's Pokémon fainted and the player is able to switch Pokémon before an opponent sends out their next Pokémon
A Pokémon affected by Heal Block can still use Ingrain (rooting itself to the ground as usual), but this Pokémon will not be healed by Ingrain as long as Heal Block is still in effect.
The effects of Ingrain can be passed by Baton Pass.
Generation III
Ghost-type Pokémon are treated as any other type, being unable to switch out.
In Pokémon Emerald, a rooted Pokémon cannot switch when the opponent's Pokémon fainted and the player would be able to switch Pokémon.
Generations IV and V
Ingrain causes the affected Pokémon to become grounded: the Pokémon is therefore susceptible to Ground-type moves; Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web (only relevant when a Pokémon is switched in via Baton Pass and obtains Ingrain); and terrain—regardless of whether it is Flying-type, has Levitate, holds an Air Balloon, or is under the effect of Magnet Rise or Telekinesis. Magnet Rise fails if used by a Pokémon under the effect of Ingrain; the move Telekinesis cannot affect a Pokémon under the effect of Ingrain.
Generation VI onwards
Ghost-type Pokémon under the effects of Ingrain are now able to switch out. However, they still cannot be forced to switch by moves that switch the target out.
If powered up by a Grassium Z into Z-Ingrain, the user's Special Defense stat is raised by one stage.

Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series
Ingrain gives the user the Ingrain status condition which makes the incapable of moving (though it may attack) and unable to switch places with the team leader.
In the Rescue Team and Explorers series, the Pokémon gains 10 HP at the end of the second turn, and every five turns after that. The status lasts for 16-30 turns.
In Gates to Infinity, the Ingrain status lasts 7 turns and the Pokémon gains 15 HP at the end of every second turn.
In Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon, the Ingrain status lasts 3 turns and the Pokémon gains 15 HP at the end of every turn.

Pokémon Rumble Rush
In Pokémon Rumble Rush, all status moves including Ingrain could only be used by opposing Pokémon and could not be obtained on any caught Pokémon. Ingrain could be seen as a move used by Boss Tangela.

Trivia
- In Generation III, the status screen erroneously states that the move has 100% accuracy, even though it targets the user (thus it ignores accuracy and evasion checks).
