Lucas (Japanese: コウキ Kōki) is the male player character of Pokémon Diamond, Pearl and Platinum. His female counterpart is Dawn. If the player chooses Dawn, he will become Rowan's assistant for the game. Lucas lives in Sandgem Town with his little sister, grandfather, and father - who works as an assistant of Professor Rowan. He is already the Professor's assistant at the beginning of the game. He also demonstrates to the player how to capture Pokémon by capturing a wild Bidoof.
The character Diamond from the Pokémon Adventures manga is based on the design of Lucas.
His English name is derived from "lux-lucis", the Latin root word for light, while his Japanese name is a reference to the Japanese word for "brightness" (光輝 kōki), much like Hikari means light (光). It is also similar to 金剛石 kongōseki, a Japanese word for diamond.
In the games
Story
Lucas lives in Twinleaf Town with his mother and dreams big, so he and his best friend (and soon-to-be rival) have high hopes of catching the legendary Pokémon of their nearby Lake. After meeting Professor Rowan and his assistant Dawn, they are attacked by wild Pokémon and, as a last resort, use the Pokémon in the briefcase the Professor has forgotten. After bringing the Pokémon back Lucas receives the Pokémon he used as well as a Pokédex and goes on to gather the eight badges of Sinnoh, defeat Team Galactic and conquer the Pokémon League all before taking on the Battle Frontier.
In the events of Platinum, Lucas and Barry instead go to visit Professor Rowan at his lab rather than go to the lake in search of a Pokémon of the same rarity as a Red Gyarados. They receive their Pokémon on Route 201 when Professor Rowan realizes that they are so dedicated to Pokémon as to attempt to travel from Twinleaf Town to Sandgem Town through the tall grass without any Pokémon of their own.
Lucas is given the biggest task, much larger than previous heroes. He has to stop Team Galactic from trying to use either Dialga or Palkia to destroy the entire universe in order to create a new one. In the events of Platinum, Team Galactic attempts to use both plus Giratina.

In the anime
Lucas has a cameo appearance at the beginning of Giratina and the Sky Warrior, in a battle against Brendan.
Although never confirmed, it is possible that Lucas in the anime is Professor Rowan's assistant, as he is in the games if the player chooses to be Dawn.

Trivia
- Like Barry having one of his default Japanese names being Shigeru, one of Lucas's default names is Satoshi. In English translations "Ash" is one of default names for Lucas, but there is no "Gary" among Barry's names. However, this was apparently recognized in German and Korean translations, which also have Ash's and Gary's name as one of Lucas's and Barry's names.
- One of Lucas's optional names include Todd in English translation and トオル Tōru (Todd's Japanese name) in Japanese translations. Other language versions do not catch this. Another name from the show is Jimmy. This one, however, is probably coincidental.
- Another of Lucas's optional names is Mark, the name of the male protagonist from the Game Boy TCG games.
- The majority of his Japanese default names are shared with Red from Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen and Ethan from Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
- Unlike most game characters with anime counterparts, the clothes of Lucas's anime counterpart are of different colors to his.
- Lucas is 4'7" (143 cm) tall and weighs 83.8 lbs (38 kg).
- Lucas and Dawn are asked if they are a couple by Mars during the Lake Verity battle: "So what is it? Are you some lovey-dovey couple to the rescue?"
- After the player defeats the Sinnoh Elite Four and becomes the Champion, Lucas will stay at the front side of Professor Rowan's laboratory in Sandgem Town (if the player chose Dawn). If the player has set the birth date on the DS Settings, he'll say the following in conversation when talked to on that day:
"Hey,<player's name>? Is it maybe your birthday today?"
If "Yes":
"I thought so! Congratulations, <player's name>! You know, I'm glad we're friends!"
If "No":
"Huh? It isn't? Now, what made me think it was your birthday? Freaky weird."
- Dawn and Lucas were shown to be holding Repeat Ball in their Platinum artwork, much like May and Brendan are holding a Premier Ball in their Emerald artwork.
- The position of his Platinum sprite looks similar to the position of Kris's Sugimori artwork in Crystal.
