Lucario (Japanese: ルカリオ Lucario) is a dual-type Fighting/Steel Pokémon.
It evolves from Riolu via happiness during the day.
Biology
Physiology
Lucario is a bipedal, jackal-like Pokémon that's around four feet in height. Lucario's forepaws are black and have one white spike on each arm on the upper-side of its wrists. In addition, there's a third spike on Lucario's chest. Lucario's snout and ears have also grown longer since its evolution from Riolu. Lucario also has a furry yellow torso, and its thighs are in the shape of what looks like blue shorts. Also, Lucario stands on the balls of its feet, rather than on its entire foot. When Lucario reads Aura, it closes its eyes, and covers its face with the black appendages stemming from its head, making it appear, in a sense, blindfolded.
Gender differences
None.
Special abilities
Lucario are sensitive to a special type of energy called Aura. Lucario can study these waves to predict the movements of their opponents, and use them to track anyone. They can also guide the waves offensively to create explosive balls of Aura energy (such as Aura Sphere, one of only two non-legendaries to learn that move). Lucario are also able to understand human speech; some people say that Lucario can also speak it, though only one has reportedly done so, and through telepathy.
Behavior
Lucario are considered to be prideful creatures, and are extremely loyal to their trainers. Lucario also seem to have a natural sense of justice.
Habitat
Lucario usually live deep in mountains very far from people to improve their skills. Therefore, like Milotic and Togekiss, they are some of the rarest non-legendary Pokémon known, and finding a wild Lucario is excruciatingly difficult.
Diet
- Main article: Pokémon food
The Lucario in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew was shown eating berries and was introduced to chocolate by Max.

Major appearances
Sir Aaron's Lucario
Over 1,000 years ago, Lucario served Sir Aaron. Lucario was sensitive to aura, invisible vibrations that all objects, especially living things, emit. This enabled him to "see" objects and living creatures and predict the actions of others even with his eyes closed.
When Cameran Palace was about to be caught in the middle of a war, Aaron was on his way to the Tree of Beginning to attempt to stop the battle when he came across Lucario, who had been temporarily blinded by a group of sand-kicking Houndoom, where Aaron told him that he was never going back to the castle. Aaron intended to sacrifice himself to stop the war, telling Lucario that he was abandoning the kingdom to stop the Pokémon from following him to the same fate. Aaron threw his staff into the ground, causing it to encase Lucario inside much like a Poké Ball. Lucario believed Aaron had betrayed him and the kingdom and was left thinking this as he fell into a deep sleep for the passing years.
Years later, in the present time, Lucario was awoken from the staff when it was held by Ash Ketchum, who has a similar aura pattern to Aaron. Lucario initially mistook Ash for Aaron, and was stubborn and distrustful of humans after being sealed in the staff. Unaware of Aaron's sacrifice, Lucario held a grudge toward Aaron, thinking Aaron had abandoned the castle and him.
Once news came out that Mew was sick, the whole of the palace knew that the source of all life in this one palace, the Tree of Beginning, would be affected.
Thus, Ash, co. and Lucario head off to the Tree. As Ash and his friends head to the core, Lucario fends off the Regis and does so succesfully.
Approaching the core, Lucario and Ash combine forces to heal Mew. After releasing a great amount Aura, Ash gets pushed away by Lucario, taking over the job.
Mew is tended to, and while Lucario sits down, exhausted by the life-draining performance, he sits down to rest. Ash then accidentally activates a Time Flower left by Aaron, explaining the true story. After realizing what really happened, Lucario regrets his actions and his feud against his late master, disappearing, joining Aaron...
Maylene's Lucario
It was first seen in Lost Leader Strategy! battling with Maylene in their training. Lucario used Aura Sphere to stop the battle of Electabuzz, Piplup and Pikachu. It is also seen battling Paul's Pokémon in a flashback.
Lucario was seen again in Crossing the Battle Line! where it battled in Dawn's gym battle against Maylene. It defeated Dawn's Ambipom and Piplup.
It appeared once more in A Triple Fighting Chance! where it battled in Ash's gym battle against Maylene. It defeated Ash's Staravia and Chimchar, but was knocked out along with Ash's Buizel, resulting in a tie.
Lucario was last seen in Enter Galactic! when it helped Ash and the others defeat Saturn and Team Galactic.
Riley's Lucario
This Lucario debuted in Steeling Peace of Mind! at Iron Island. When Ash and his friends traveled there after being contacted by Barry, they found the local Template:Type2 Pokémon fighting brutally against each other and the other Pokémon on the island. When a crazed Aggron attacked Ash, Riley stepped in and had Lucario attack it with Close Combat. Despite being a Steel-type as well, Lucario wasn't affected like the others of its type due to its strong aura.
Minor appearances
Lucario makes a cameo in the theme songs Battle Frontier, Together, and The Greatest - Everyday!.
Lucario also makes a brief appearance at the intro of The Rise of Darkrai, where one is shown dodging Rayquaza's Hyper Beam.
A Lucario and Froslass were seen in a Double contest on TV in Unlocking the Red Chain of Events!.

In the manga
In the Pokémon Adventures manga, like in games, it appears under the ownership of Riley.
In Pokémon Diamond and Pearl Adventure! Hareta gained a Riolu egg in Serious Training on Iron Island!! which hatched into a Riolu later on in that chapter then evolved in to Lucario in DPA14.
Hiori owns a Lucario in Phantom Thief Pokémon 7.
In the TCG

Other appearances
Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Lucario is a playable character available in Super Smash Bros. Brawl. It is unlocked by encountering it in The Subspace Emissary either from choosing it to battle and claim victory over Meta Knight or vice-versa. It can also be unlocked by playing 100 brawls or beating Target Smash!! on all difficulty levels (in either 1 or 2-player modes).
Lucario appears to be able to talk with the help of Aura; most notably seen while using his Final Smash when it says "Watch the power of Aura!" Lucario's fighting style revolves around Aura manipulation and the concept of "high risk, high return"; the more damage Lucario has taken, the stronger it and its attacks become. Its power is at its peak when it has taken 200% damage, and is in last place during a fight.

Codec information (on Shadow Moses Island)
- Mei Ling: "You're fighting Lucario, aren't you, Snake?"
- Solid Snake: "Mei Ling, what's that purple fire coming out of his hands??"
- Mei Ling: "That's his 'Aura.'"
- Solid Snake: "Aura?"
- Mei Ling: "I guess you could call it his life force. Lucario can use his own Aura and turn it into power. Every time Lucario's damage increases, his Aura gains strength, making his attacks more powerful. So don't think you've got him beat just because his health is down."
- Solid Snake: "The cornered rat will bite the cat... Sounds like trouble."
- Mei Ling: "Hey! When did you become so good with proverbs?!"
- Solid Snake: "You must have rubbed off on me."
- Mei Ling: "Well, come back in one piece, and I'll teach you all the Chinese proverbs you can handle."
Trophy information
Classic Mode: Lucario
An Aura Pokémon. It can track energy called Aura, which is given off by all living creatures. It's a unique combination of both Fighting- and Template:Type2s. Lucario evolves from Riolu during the day if its happiness has reached a certain point. It specializes in attacks that use Aura energy, like Dark Pulse and a can't-miss technique, Aura Sphere.
All-Star Mode: Aura Storm
Lucario's Final Smash. After flying off the screen, Lucario reappears in its center. It then launches a powerful Aura attack against all foes within a certain distance. The key to this attack is the ability to change its angle--it's a must to sweep slowly left and right to his selected enemies multiple times. The last blow will send the victim flying away.
Game data
NPC appearances
- Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue Team: Lucario is seen as the greatest rescue leader of all time, and his adventures have become legendary. While the player never meets Lucario, Alakazam tells the player that his goal is to become closer to Lucario's greatness. Earning 15,000 Rescue Points will put the player in the top rank - the Lucario rank - at which point the Lucario statue will be displayed outside the rescue base. As Red Rescue Team and Blue Rescue team were released before Generation IV, Lucario may or may not have been one of the first Generation IV Pokémon designed.
- Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia: Lucario is the guardian of the Blue Gem.

Trivia
- Lucario's English name, which is unchanged from the Japanese version, was revealed on February 9, 2006 with the announcement of the title of Lucario and the Mystery of Mew.
- Before Pokémon Diamond and Pearl were released, many believed Lucario to be a legendary Pokémon, based on its starring role in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew. This has since been proven untrue, as it is readily available in the Generation IV games, is under ownership by NPCs, and even evolves from a Pokémon, Riolu.
- In Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia, Lucario is the only one out of three Gem Guardians that is not a legendary Pokémon.
- Lucario can learn damaging moves from 15 of the 17 elemental types. The only types that Lucario can't learn are Template:Type2 and Template:Type2, with the exception of Hidden Power.
- In Pokémon Battle Revolution, a Lucario Costume is seen, worn by Dusty.
- Both of Lucario's abilities relate to flinching. Steadfast makes Lucario faster when flinching, whilst Inner Focus protects it from it.
- Due to this combination, Steadfast can only activate in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Explorers of Darkness and Explorers of Sky if Lucario becomes cross-eyed.
- Lucario is the only Pokémon other than the Cubone evolutionary family to learn a bone-based move. Ironically, Lucario is the only Pokémon seen using it in the anime.
- Strangely, Lucario can learn Ice Punch, ThunderPunch, and even Blaze Kick, but cannot learn Fire Punch.
- No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Lucario.
- It is the only Template:Type2 Pokémon that receives double damage from Fighting-type moves, due to its dual status of also being a Template:Type2.
- Lucario has the highest Special Attack of all Fighting-types.
- It is also the only Template:Type2 Pokémon whose Special Attack stat surpasses its Attack.
- Lucario is tied with Magnemite for the lowest base Defense of all Steel-types.
- This means it has the lowest base defense of all fully evolved Steel-types.
- Excluding Jirachi (whose base stats are all 100), it is the only Steel-type Pokémon whose base defense is tied for its lowest stat.
- This means it has the lowest base defense of all fully evolved Steel-types.
- It is also the only Fighting-type not weak to Flying- and Template:Type2 moves (without being part Psychic-type itself).
- It is the only Pokémon to have a double resistance to Template:Type2 attacks and one of two Pokémon that have a double resistance to Template:Type2 moves; the other is Steelix.
- Lucario is the only Pokémon that learns Dragon Pulse through leveling up who is not a Template:Type2 or related to a Dragon-type.
- Despite Aura Sphere being a Template:Type2 move, Lucario is the only Fighting-type Pokémon to learn this move, save for a Riolu from Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia.
Origin
Lucario appears to be based on the Egyptian god Anubis, who has the head of a jackal. It also seems to be based on an Egyptian boxer. Boxing is a sport that is believed to have origins in Egypt.
Name origin
Lucario's name possibly derives from part of a Japanese spelling of oracle or orichalcum in reverse, reflecting its mythical design, its ability to see into the supernatural, and its Steel-type. It may also refer to Cairo, Egypt. The word pharaoh may also be involved.
