Origin
Tepig is based on a saddleback piglet. It and its evolutions, as stated by Ken Sugimori, were designed in a Chinese style.

Tepig may be a combination of "tepid", meaning lukewarm, and "pig". Pokabu is derived from ぽかぽか pokapoka, warmth circulating through one's body, combined with 豚 buta, pig; or ブー bū, "oink".
