Emboar (Japanese: エンブオー Enbuoh) is a dual-type Fire/Fighting Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Pignite starting at level 36. It is the final form of Tepig.

Biology

Physiology

Emboar is an enormous, bulky, boar-like Fire-type Pokémon. It has short legs, a small tail ending in a tuft of hair and a small dome shaped head with no neck. Its egg shaped torso makes up most of its body. It has two powerful arms, which grow wider towards its fists with tufts of fur on the elbows. Constantly burning flames wreath the front of its neck and shoulders resembling a traditional Chinese center-parted beard. It has a red pig-like nose and large bushy black eyebrows that sweep up at the sides like horns or ears. Two tusks protrude from its lower jaw, jutting out at the corners of its wide mouth. Its forearms begin orange in coloration, with the coloration of the upper and lower arms separated by gold-colored bands. The lower arms and elbows are black, the wrists have bands of dark red coloration, and the hands are tipped with three claws. A large, dark horizontal stripe on the chest of Emboar sports swirled yellow features, and its legs and lower underside are red, although its feet are black-colored, rimmed in a spiky manner with gold, and ending in two-toed claws.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Using the wreath of flames on its neck and shoulders, Emboar will set its hands on fire to launch Fire Punches. It uses its power and speed to master Fighting-type moves.

Emboar appeared in M14, under the ownership of Tatsuki. It fought Ash's Oshawott, which it lost to, in a tournament held in Eindoak. Iris's Emolga also battled the Mega Fire Pig Pokémon only to forfeit the battle when she used Volt Switch and sent out Excadrill instead.

  • Although its Pokédex entry states that it uses fire punches to fight, Emboar is unable to learn Fire Punch.
  • Emboar is the heaviest fully evolved Fire-type starter Pokémon.
  • Emboar, Samurott and Serperior all share the same base stat total of 528.
  • The Tepig family is the only Fire-type starter family where no members have English names that start with the letter "C"; or contain it, for that matter.

Origin

Emboar is based on the soldier of Romance of the Three Kingdoms.[1] It and its pre-evolutions, as stated by Ken Sugimori, were designed in a Chinese style. Because of its Chinese style, it may be based on Zhu Bajie, a pig demon from the Chinese tale Journey to the West. Infernape is also based on another character from the novel, Sun Wukong, and has a similar design as well as the same typing. It seems to also take inspirations of a pig or boar in a professional wrestler's or possibly a lucha libre's attire. The swirled pattern that surrounds its abdomen is visually similar to the patterns on ancient Greek pottery.

Name origin

"Emboar" is derived from ember and boar. "Enbuoh" may have the same origin, or it may also be derived from the words 炎 en (flame), 豚 buta (pig) or 武 bu (martial arts), and 王 ō (king).

In other languages

Language Name Name Origin
German Flambirex From flambieren and rex.
French Roitiflam From roi, rôti, and flamme.
Korean 염무왕 Yeommuwang
Chinese (Mandarin) 炎武王 Yánwǔwáng From its Japanese name. May be taken as a reference to 周武王 (King Wu of Zhou).
