Lairon (Japanese: コドラ Kodora) is a dual-type Steel/Rock Pokémon.

It evolves from Aron starting at level 32 and evolves into Aggron starting at level 42.

Biology

Physiology

Lairon has a stocky, armored, quadruped build. Its body is a dark gray and its eyes are sky blue. Its back is covered with segments of iron armor, each with a high ridge and round dark holes on the sides. The sides of Lairon’s lower jaw have several flat protrusions and two teeth are visible in its mouth. There are two pronged metal bands on Lairon's legs. The upper is gray, and the lower is iron-colored.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Lairon uses its metal body parts to attack. It can learn Dragon Rush by breeding.

Behavior

Lairon feeds on iron contained in rocks and water, and drinks mineral spring water until it is bloated, as it has been said doing so tempers its steel body. Lairon makes its nests near such mineral springs, on mountains where iron ore is buried. Due to its nesting preferences, this may cause it to clash with humans attempting to mine the ore.

Lairon are also known to show off their strength when they bash into rocks, with the sparks being released seemingly showing their strength. When two Lairon meet each other, they may fight for territory by bashing into each other.

Habitat

Lairon live in caves that are rich in iron ore.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Lairon usually eat rocks that contain iron and drink mineral water.

In the anime

Major appearances

Lairon's first appearance was in A Fan with a Plan and Cruisin' for a Losin'. It was owned by a Pokémon Coordinator named Savannah and used in a Pokémon Contest against May's Bulbasaur.

Lairon also appeared in A Pyramiding Rage! under the ownership of Paul. It battled against Brandon's Regice, but was defeated quickly.

Minor appearances

Lairon also made a cameo in Numero Uno Articuno as a Pokémon belonging to Noland.

Multiple Lairon appeared in Lucario and the Mystery of Mew as part of the feuding armies.

Lairon, together with its evolutionary family Aron and Aggron, appeared in Giratina and the Sky Warrior where it helped Ash and his friends to stop the glacier.

Lairon also appeared in Steeling Peace of Mind!.

In the manga

Sapphire's Aggron, Rono, as a Lairon

In the Pokémon Adventures manga

Main article: Rono

Rono, Sapphire's Aron, evolved into a Lairon before her challenge with Brawly in the Dewford Gym. Although it was, having newly evolved, her highest-level Pokémon, it failed to beat his Hariyama, but was put into good use against Aqua Admin Matt, beating his Pokémon and injuring him badly enough that he was not taken to the Seafloor Cavern sometime later. It evolved into an Aggron on Mirage Island as a result of the training Sapphire underwent alongside Ruby.

Trivia

  • Along with its pre-evolution and its evolution, Lairon does not learn any Rock-type moves by leveling up, despite being part Rock.
  • Its weight is the same as that of Rhydon, another Rock-type in its second stage of evolution.
  • Lairon can learn the signature moves of both Cranidos and Shieldon's evolutionary families: Head Smash and Metal Burst, the former by breeding in HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions, and the latter by leveling up.
  • In Generation III, Lairon is the only non-Bug-type aside from Magikarp that only learns a single move at its evolutionary stage without canceling evolution later on, with Protect at level 37.

Origin

Lairon may be based on the Pulgasari, a monster which eats iron in Korean legend.

Name origin

Lairon may be a combination of lairy (slang for aggressive) or lair and iron.

Kodora may be a combination of 巨 ko (large) and dragon.
