Blackthorn City is a quiet town built into the side of a mountain. On the northern outskirts of town is the Dragon's Den, where you'll meet the town's most revered Elder. This is also the place where you'll win your eighth and final Gym Badge.
The quiet mountain retreat known as Blackthorn City lies isolated in the northeast. The main attraction is the Blackthorn Gym, the final Gym in the region. North of the Gym is Dragon's Den, a training ground for Dragon specialists. On Saturdays, Santos of the Week Siblings can be found here.

The Move Tutor house
There are four people in the house next to the Poké Mart, all of which provide valuable services regarding a Pokémon's moves.
Time for a Trade
The girl in the eastern house is looking to trade. She offers her Dodrio in exchange for a female Dragonair. The Dodrio arrives holding a In-battle effect item.

* Move Deleter: He'll let a Pokémon forget a learned move - even a move that can't normally be forgotten, like an HM.
The Move Tutor House
* Move Maniac: Give him a Exchangeable item and he'll let a Pokémon remember one of the moves it has forgotten.
There are four people in the southwest house, all of which provide valuable services regarding a Pokémon's moves.
* Grandma Wilma: Bring her a Dragon Pokémon with high friendship and she'll teach it Draco Meteor, the ultimate Dragon-type move.
* Move Deleter: He can help a Pokémon forget any move, even HM moves.
* Ultimate Move Tutor: He teaches the ultimate move (Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, or Hydro Cannon) to the fully-evolved form of your starter Pokémon. Come back to his house later in the game when you have a fully evolved Kanto, Hoenn, or Sinnoh starter Pokémon to teach it one of these powerful moves.
* Move Maniac: In exchange for a Exchangeable item, he helps a Pokémon remember any move it had previously forgotten.
* Grandma Wilma: When shown a Dragon Pokémon that is happy with its Trainer, she will teach it the ultimate Dragon-type move, Draco Meteor.
* Ultimate Move Tutor: He teaches any fully-evolved starter Pokémon the ultimate move of its type; Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, or Hydro Cannon.

The Blackthorn Gym is devoted to the Dragon, so Ice- and Dragon-type moves will see the most use here. However, there are some Ace Trainers that uses Horsea or Seadra. As they are Water-type Pokémon, Electric moves are also useful. The first thing you'll notice is that, due to the lava bubbling underfoot, the floor has become unstable, and you'll need to return your lead Pokémon to its Poké Ball. After receiving a major redesign from , the Gym now has a single floor that requires the use of the rotating, moving platforms to cross the lava. The blue button causes a platform to rotate in place, while the two red arrows move you in either direction. To reach the Gym Leader, you'll need to navigate the three platforms, and fight past five Ace Trainers.
The Blackthorn Gym specializes in Dragon Pokémon. Dragons take less damage from Grass, Fire, Water, and Electric moves, and are only vulnerable to Dragon- and Ice attacks. Pokémon found in Ice Path, like Swinub or Jynx, will have an advantage. The floor has become unstable due to the lava bubbling underfoot, forcing your lead Pokémon to return to its Poké Ball. Reaching the Gym Leader requires crossing the lava on movable platforms. These platforms each have a blue tile, which causes it to rotate, and two arrow tiles, which move it in the respective direction.

Once your battle with Clair begins, use Electric moves to inflict quadruple damage to her Gyarados. Kingdra is only weak against Dragon attacks, and you'll also want to use Dragon-type or Ice-type moves to beat Dragonair before it Paralysis your Pokémon with Thunder Wave.
Clair's Gyarados can lower its opponent's Attack with its Intimidate Ability. It cannot make good use of its Twister and Dragon Pulse moves due to its lower Special Attack, but Bite builds on its already-high Attack. Both of her Dragonair can inflict paralysis with Thunder Wave, before executing strong moves like Dragon Pulse, Fire Blast, and Aqua Tail. Her Kingdra is only vulnerable to Dragon-type attacks, and can beat its target down with the powerful Hydro Pump, Dragon Pulse, and Hyper Beam attacks; the best approach is to poison, paralyze, or put it to sleep before hammering away at it. 72 from Ice Path can help against her two Dragonair, while 57 from Olivine City deals serious damage to Gyarados.

Congratulations, you've just defeated the eighth and final Gym Leader of Johto!  That's quite an achievement, but Clair won't hand over your last Badge that easily. While she acknowledges that she lost, she still doesn't believe that you're ready to take on the Elite Four. In order for her to recognize you as the victor, you have to travel to the Dragon's Den shrine in the cave behind the Gym. Bring only five Pokémon(you'll soon know the reason), including a Pokémon with Surf and Whirlpool, and head inside.
Clair refuses to accept defeat. She claims that you are still not ready for the Pokémon League, and directs you to take the "Dragon-master challenge". There is a small shrine in the Dragon's Den, a large cave located underneath the city. If you can reach it, she will give up the Rising Badge. Bring along a Pokémon with Surf and Whirlpool, and cross the lake behind the Gym.

Only select Trainers can enter the Dragon's Den, a place for training and meditation. The Dragon Master lives inside the shrine on the south side of the cave. Be sure to enter with no more than five Pokémon!

Climb down the ladder to the main cavern. Fight Ace Trainer Kobe, then collect the hidden Revive to the west and the Vitamin to the southeast. Surf west to battle Ace Trainer Piper and find a hidden Potion. Swim southwest to fight Twins Clea & Gil, and pick up the Ether nearby. Use Whirlpool to calm the waters, then sail east past the shrine before turning north. Grab the Type-enhancing item from the east side, then backtrack and enter the shrine.

The Dragon Master realizes right away that you were sent here by Clair. He gives a short test to determine your attitude towards Pokémon. Avoid the negative answers to pass the test.

Enter the cave, and take the stairs down into the main cavern. Surf to the southwest, and you'll reach a large whirlpool. Have a Pokémon use Whirlpool to cross over it, and surf east past the Dragon Shrine. Northeast of the shrine is the Type-enhancing item, which enhances Dragon moves. Backtrack to the shrine, and speak to the Dragon Master to be quizzed about your attitude towards Pokémon. Depending on how you answer the five questions, you'll be rewarded with a Dratini, which may or may not know the move ExtremeSpeed. To get the Dratini with ExtremeSpeed, <b>do not</b> choose any of the following answers:
Clair appears, expecting you to have failed. She refuses to believe the truth, until the Dragon Master steps in. He orders her to accept her defeat, and threatens to tell Lance of these events. She hurriedly awards you the Rising, which ensures obedience from all Pokémon and enables the use of Waterfall in the field. The Master scolds her, and she leaves quickly. Speaking of waterfalls, the Master mentions a huge waterfall, deep in the Whirl Islands, where Lugia is said to rest, but reaching it requires a IV...
* Underling (Question 1)
* Cheating (Question 2)
* Weak Person (Question 3)
* Violence (Question 4)
Finally, you'll need to answer "Both" for the fifth question. After the quiz, Clair walks in, expecting to see that you've failed. As much as she would rather not, the Elder persuades her to give you the Rising, your final Badge from Johto. This Badge earns the respect of all of your Pokémon, and enables the use of Waterfall in the field. As you head for the cave's exit, you'll run into Clair on the northern shore, where she's waiting to give you 59. She tells you to return to New Bark and take Route 27 to reach the Elite Four. When you exit Dragon's Den, you'll get a call from Professor Elm, asking you to return to New Bark Town. To get your Dratini, re-enter the cave and speak to the Elder again.

Heal up your battle-weary team, and set off to the south to reach 45.
As you head to the exit, you find Clair waiting on the north shore. She hands over 59, and tells you to return to New Bark Town and take 27 to reach the Elite Four (Kanto).

Later...
Upon exiting the cave, you receive a call from Professor Elm, asking you to visit the Lab. Before leaving town, re-enter the cave and speak to the Master again to receive the special Dratini.

Return here after fighting Silver at Kanto's Mt. Moon and getting all Kanto Badges. Lance and Clair will approach you outside the Dragon Shrine to fight a tag battle against you and your rival.
Double Trouble
Visit the cave again after fighting Silver at Mt. Moon and earning all eight Kanto badges. Lance and Clair can be found outside the shrine, anxious to fight a Tag Battle against you and Silver.

45 is a rugged route leading down from the mountains. The ravine forces the path to split and recombine multiple times, and many small ledges prevent northbound travel. The east entrance to Dark Cave is located just outside of the city, and the route eventually reaches a small lake, where it turns west toward 46.

While it was accessible once you had reached 31, you didn't have the moves (Flash, Rock Smash, Surf, Strength) needed to fully explore this shadowy cave.

::From the northeast entrance near Blackthorn, walk down the two stairways to reach a small lake. Surf directly south, and climb onto the nearby rock ledge to find a Revive. Follow the path to the west, and you'll find 54 near a ledge. Backtrack to the lake, and swim across to reach the northern shore (west of the entryway). Follow the trail north, then turn towards the southwest. Climb up the stairway to the west, and follow the rock ledge to the northeast. Speak to the guy to get a pair of Type-enhancing item, which enhance Dark moves. Head south and jump the two sets of ledges, grab the hidden Potion on the lone blue-green rock, and walk through the doorway to reach the cave's western side.

Dark Cave
::After exploring the Blackthorn side of the cave, you'll emerge on the western side at the edge of another small lake. Surf to the west find a Potion, and a Poké Ball hidden nearby. Walk south and swim across the tiny pool of water to obtain a Flute, which decreases the chances of fighting wild Pokémon. Navigate around the group of ledges, and Rock Smash the two boulders to head east. Have a Pokémon use Strength to shove the boulder out of your way, and use Rock Smash again to break the rock east of here. Head north, and follow the path east and then south around a large rock formation, where you'll find a Potion. Continue south, jump the ledge, and pick up the Ether to the east, hidden in the rock wall. Continue south down two more stairways, and grab the Status ailment healing item. Jump the ledge to the west, and take the stairway south to reach a Battle item. Jump the ledge, and head east to reach the exit to 46.
Though Dark Cave was first accessible from 31, the moves Surf, Strength, and Rock Smash were needed to fully explore the area. This cave is the only location where wild Dunsparce can be found, and one of the few places where wild Wobbuffet can be found.

Mountain Road
45 follows a river ravine, forming a steep trail leading down from the mountains. The route splits and recombines multiple times, passing the eastern entrance to Dark Cave before turning west towards 46. With so many ledges and bridges scattered across the route, you'll need to travel southbound more than once to get every item, and fight every Trainer.

* <b>To collect every item:</b>
::Walk south from Dark Cave's southern entrance to find an Ether. Walk down the steps and jump the first ledge nearby, and head east across the bridge. Jump over the ledge to the south to pick up a Potion. Cross the second bridge near Ace Trainer Kelly, and jump over the ledge here to find a Status ailment healing item sitting in a large patch of tall grass. Ignore the next bridge, and jump the next ledge west of the river for a Valuable item, and another ledge for a Revive. Here you'll be standing near two stairways - one leading south, the other leading east; step down the eastern stairway, cross the bridge, and jump the ledge to reach a small pond. Pick the Grn Apricorn from the tree, jump the ledge, and take the bridge west to reach 46.
* <b>To fight every Trainer:</b>
::Walk south from Blackthorn and jump the first ledge on the eastern side of the river. The route diverges around a rock outcropping; you can jump the western ledges to fight Hiker Erik, or take the eastern side to fight Ace Trainer Ryan. South of those two Trainers, cut across the bridge to the route's western side, and jump south to battle Hiker Parry. Step down the stairs, jump the next ledge, and cross the bridge to challenge Ace Trainer Kelly. Head south and jump the three ledges to fight Black Belt Kenji. South of Kenji, the route splits around a second rock formation east of the river; jump the single east ledge to battle Hiker Michael and then head west to fight Hiker Timothy. Continue south, and travel west to reach 46.

Turn west, then head south. Collect the hidden Ether, then surf south across the lake. Grab the Revive from the southeast platform, then go west to reach 54. Head north across the lake and follow the path around to the southwest. Speak to the man in the northwest corner to receive the Type-enhancing item, then head south and jump the larger pair of ledges. Check the dark rock for a hidden Potion, and step through the doorway to the Violet side.

Revision as of 19:10, 28 June 2014

This is the Bulbapedia walkthrough for Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
These pages follow the remade Nintendo DS iteration, not Pokémon Gold and Silver. The guide for those games can be found here.

Blackthorn City

Blackthorn City

The quiet mountain retreat known as Blackthorn City lies isolated in the northeast. The main attraction is the Blackthorn Gym, the final Gym in the region. North of the Gym is Dragon's Den, a training ground for Dragon-type specialists. On Saturdays, Santos of the Week Siblings can be found here.

Time for a Trade

The girl in the eastern house is looking to trade. She offers her Dodrio in exchange for a female Dragonair. The Dodrio arrives holding a Smoke Ball.

The Move Tutor House

There are four people in the southwest house, all of which provide valuable services regarding a Pokémon's moves.

 • Move Deleter: He can help a Pokémon forget any move, even HM moves.
 • Move Maniac: In exchange for a Heart Scale, he helps a Pokémon remember any move it had previously forgotten.
 • Grandma Wilma: When shown a Dragon Pokémon that is happy with its Trainer, she will teach it the ultimate Dragon-type move, Draco Meteor.
 • Ultimate Move Tutor: He teaches any fully-evolved starter Pokémon the ultimate move of its type; Frenzy Plant, Blast Burn, or Hydro Cannon.

Blackthorn Gym

Blackthorn Gym

Blackthorn City Pokémon Gym
Leader: Clair

The Blessed User of Dragon Pokémon

The Blackthorn Gym specializes in Dragon-type Pokémon. Dragons take less damage from Grass, Fire, Water, and Electric moves, and are only vulnerable to Dragon- and Ice-type attacks.

TM72 (Avalanche) from Ice Path can help against her two Dragonair, while TM57 (Charge Beam) from Olivine City deals serious damage to Gyarados.

Blackthorn Gym
The Rising Badge

Clair refuses to accept defeat. She claims that you are still not ready for the Pokémon League, and directs you to take the "Dragon-master challenge". There is a small shrine in the Dragon's Den, a large cave located underneath the city. If you can reach it, she will give up the Rising Badge. Bring along a Pokémon with Surf and Whirlpool, and cross the lake behind the Gym.

Dragon's Den

Dragon's Den

Only select Trainers can enter the Dragon's Den, a place for training and meditation. The Dragon Master lives inside the shrine on the south side of the cave. Be sure to enter with no more than five Pokémon!

Climb down the ladder to the main cavern. Fight Ace Trainer Kobe, then collect the hidden Revive to the west and the Calcium to the southeast. Surf west to battle Ace Trainer Piper and find a hidden Max Potion. Swim southwest to fight Twins Clea & Gil, and pick up the Max Elixir nearby. Use Whirlpool to calm the waters, then sail east past the shrine before turning north. Grab the Dragon Fang from the east side, then backtrack and enter the shrine.

Shrine

The Dragon Master realizes right away that you were sent here by Clair. He gives a short test to determine your attitude towards Pokémon. Avoid the negative answers to pass the test.

Question Answers
1 What are Pokémon to you? Ally Junior Friend
2 What helps you to win battles? Strategy Training Cheating
3 What kind of Trainer do you wish to battle? Weak Strong Anyone
4 What is most important for raising Pokémon? Love Violence Knowledge
5 Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. Which is more important? Strength Both Weakness

Clair appears, expecting you to have failed. She refuses to believe the truth, until the Dragon Master steps in. He orders her to accept her defeat, and threatens to tell Lance of these events. She hurriedly awards you the Rising Badge, which ensures obedience from all Pokémon and enables the use of Waterfall in the field. The Master scolds her, and she leaves quickly. Speaking of waterfalls, the Master mentions a huge waterfall, deep in the Whirl Islands, where Lugia is said to rest, but reaching it requires a Silver Wing...

As you head to the exit, you find Clair waiting on the north shore. She hands over TM59 (Dragon Pulse), and tells you to return to New Bark Town and take Route 27 to reach the Elite Four.

Upon exiting the cave, you receive a call from Professor Elm, asking you to visit the Lab. Before leaving town, re-enter the cave and speak to the Master again to receive the special Dratini.

Double Trouble

Visit the cave again after fighting Silver at Mt. Moon and earning all eight Kanto badges. Lance and Clair can be found outside the shrine, anxious to fight a Tag Battle against you and Silver.

Route 45

Route 45

Route 45 is a rugged route leading down from the mountains. The ravine forces the path to split and recombine multiple times, and many small ledges prevent northbound travel. The east entrance to Dark Cave is located just outside of the city, and the route eventually reaches a small lake, where it turns west toward Route 46.

Dark Cave, via Routes 31 and 46
Dark Cave, via Route 45

Dark Cave

Though Dark Cave was first accessible from Route 31, the moves Surf, Strength, and Rock Smash were needed to fully explore the area. This cave is the only location where wild Dunsparce can be found, and one of the few places where wild Wobbuffet can be found.

Turn west, then head south. Collect the hidden Elixir, then surf south across the lake. Grab the Revive from the southeast platform, then go west to reach TM54 (False Swipe). Head north across the lake and follow the path around to the southwest. Speak to the man in the northwest corner to receive the BlackGlasses, then head south and jump the larger pair of ledges. Check the dark rock for a hidden Hyper Potion, and step through the doorway to the Violet side.

Violet side

A Potion and a hidden Poké Ball can be found to the west, and a Black Flute is located to the south, past a small pool of water. Use Surf or Rock Smash to travel eastward to a narrow tunnel, then use Strength to move the boulder. Use Rock Smash again to reach the northeast corner, and the Hyper Potion not far to the south. Jump the ledge and inspect the east wall for a hidden Max Ether. Collect the Full Heal to the south, and the Dire Hit to the southwest, before exiting to Route 46.

Route 46

Route 46

The rugged mountain road of Route 45 comes to an end in Route 46, as the mountains give way to smaller cliffs. To the west, a small grove of Apricorn trees grows in a secluded field. Head south through the gate, and cut through Route 29 to return to New Bark Town.
