Sapphire (Japanese: ルビー Ruby) is a character from the Pokémon Ruby-Sapphire manga who first appeared in Let's Try To Be Idols!!. She is based on May from Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire and is one of Red's rivals.
Character
Despite being rivals with Red during the Pokémon Contest both of them competed in, she was shown to have some friendly advice.
History
Sapphire is a Pokémon Coordinator from Hoenn who introduced herself to Red when he entered the building with his Pokémon. Red takes a liking to her Torchic, seeing that it was the one that he was about to go on a journey with before going to Hoenn. Sapphire recommends him to partake in a Pokémon Contest in which Red does. When it was Sapphire turn to perform on stage, she manages to get a perfect score and wins the competition, placing Red in second place.
Pokémon
Torchic is Sapphire's starter Pokémon and a rival of Red's Clefairy.
It first appeared in Strongest Rival Appears!? where Professor Birch released the Hoenn starters for Red to see. This Torchic was a bit ditzy as it landed on Clefairy's head, but fun to be with. Due to the Torchic's personality, Red decided to choose it and it became a walking Pokémon similar to Clefairy, Pikachu and Tyrogue. However, when the group headed to Hoenn, Torchic was returned to Professor Birch. Sometime before Let's Try To Be Idols!!, Sapphire received it from him when she was beginning her Pokémon journey. When the group head to a Contest to compete in, it was revealed to them when Sapphire chose Torchic as her Contest Pokémon. During the final round, Torchic was up against Clefairy.
None of Torchic's moves are known.
Trivia
- Her and Ruby's names were switched in Chuang Yi's English translation of the manga, possibly to match the names of counterpart characters in Pokémon Adventures manga.
