Dragonite (Japanese: カイリュー Kairyu) is a Dragon/Flying-type Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Dragonite, despite being bulky are incredibly agile and fast. They resemble an European dragon, and have a pair of little wings that can increase in size while in flight. It is somewhat taller than most of humans.

None.

Special abilities

Dragonite are very strong. They can cause a great deal of damage to most Pokémon. Dragonite's signature move is Outrage, a powerful Dragon-type move. Although it is rather difficult compared to other Pokémon to level a Dragonite up, their gain much more power than most other Pokémon after they evolve.

Behavior

Dragonite has a kindhearted disposition. They have been said to save people from drowning and lead ships that have been trapped in storms to safety. Dragonite are said to have a human-matching intelligence. They are extremely fast, so fast that they are able to circle around the globe in sixteen hours.

Habitat

Dragonite are very rare in the wild, if found at all. People have claimed that there is an island somewhere that only Dragonite inhabit.

In the anime, Dragonite seemed to be an unknown Pokémon before Mystery at the Lighthouse, Bill is seen looking at the Pokémon and calling it unknown. That Dragonite was a giant Pokémon.

The first time that Dragonite actually made an appearance was during Mewtwo Strikes Back. The orange dragon delivered an invitation to Ash and co. to come to New Island.

A Dragonite belonging to Drake was seen in Hello Pummello and Enter the Dragonite.

Lance used his Dragonite to defeat the Red Gyarados in Rage of Innocence. Lance's Dragonite appeared again during The Scuffle of Legends.

A Dragonite that belonged to the original Gym Leader of the Blackthorn City Gym appeared in Fangs For Nothing. This Dragonite went on a rampage when Team Rocket tried to steal a sacred bowl of fire in the following episode.

Also, in the English-only special, The Mastermind of Mirage Pokémon, Professor Oak owns a very powerful Dragonite.

In the manga

In Pokémon Special, Lance, leader of the Elite Four, has a Dragonite.

In the TCG

Dragonite has appeared 13 times in the TCG mostly as special types (Dark, Light and δ)

  • Pokémon Ranger: After the sixth mission, it is possible to use the Dragonite Bus. The Dragonite must be captured once but afterwards it will fly the player to any of the Ranger bases.

Trivia

Origin

Appearance-wise, it is similar to European dragons. In regards to its friendly nature and high intelligence, it is closer to a lóng, a traditional Chinese dragon who brings good luck.

Name origin

Dragonite's name appears to be a combination of dragon and knight or night. It could also refer to draconite, a mythical stone of dragons. Its Japanese name is a combination of 海 kai, ocean, 竜 ryū, dragon.
