Hydreigon (Japanese: サザンドラ Sazandora) is a dual-type Dark/Dragon pseudo-legendary Pokémon.

It evolves from Zweilous starting at level 64. It is the final form of Deino.

Biology

Physiology

Hydreigon is a three-headed, dragon-like Pokémon. Hydreigon has six black wings on its back, which are similar to those of Giratina's Origin Forme. On Hydreigon's neck is a fuchsia-colored flower-like collar which opens to its head. The main head is a dark blue and its eyes are black with fuchsia pupils. Its hands, also black, harbor a head in each one; these heads are also blue with black eyes. There are small collars on the inside of Hydreigon's hands. On its abdomen are two overall-like fuchsia stripes. Its feet appear atrophied, having no claws or defined soles and two or three small toes. Its tail also sports a fuchsia stripe with a black tuft on the end of it.

Trivia

  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Hydreigon and its evolutionary relatives.
  • Of all the Pokémon that evolve by level alone, Hydreigon evolves from its pre-evolution later than any other Pokémon, at level 64.
  • Hydreigon shares the same species name with Sharpedo. They are both known as Brutal Pokémon.
  • Hydreigon has the highest Special Attack of all non-legendary Dark-type Pokémon.
  • Hydreigon is the only pseudo-legendary Pokémon to not have Attack as its highest stat.
  • Hydreigon's evolutionary family, along with Salamence's, are the only Pokémon exclusively in the Dragon Egg Group.
  • Hydreigon is the only pseudo-legendary Pokémon to have never been used by a Champion.
    • It is, however, used by Ghetsis, the Trainer who is battled at the end of the Pokémon League during the first Hall of Fame entry.
  • Ghetsis uses a level 54 Hydreigon in battle, even though it doesn't evolve from Zweilous until level 64.
  • Hydreigon can learn moves belonging to 16 of the 17 types; it cannot learn any Grass-type moves.

Origin

Hydreigon is based on Yamata no Orochi. It may also incorporate elements of hydras and Slavic dragons.

Originally, according to interviews with Ken Sugimori in Nintendo Dream, Hydreigon and its pre-evolutions were intended to be cybernetic dragons incorporating aspects of tanks within their bodies before being redesigned around the theme of Yamata no Orochi. The tank track-like markings on Hydreigon's body are a remnant of this design.

Name origin

Hydreigon seems to be a combination of hydra, drei, meaning three in German, and dragon. Both the sa and zan in Sazandora seem to come from 三 sa/san, or three, a reference to its three heads. The dora in its name comes from either dragon or hydra, a possible reference to the multi-headed hydra of Greek lore. The choice of dora as a suffix may also be inspired by King Ghidorah, another three-headed dragon based on the Orochi.
