Karrablast (Japanese: カブルモ Kaburumo) is a Bug-type Pokémon.

It evolves into Escavalier when traded for a Shelmet, which evolves into Accelgor simultaneously. Neither evolves if at least one holds an Everstone during the trade.

Biology

Physiology

Karrablast is a round-bodied, bipedal Pokémon with a primarily blue carapace that comprises a horn at the tip. Karrablast's face is black in coloration, with a teal patch on its forehead, a fanged mouth, and eyes with orange pupils and yellow scleras. Its ridged underbelly, or plastron, is yellow, and its stubby arms and legs are black.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

It can spew acidic liquid. It is also capable of using many physical techniques to overpower foes, such as X-Scissor and Double-Edge, although it is presumably restricted by its small size.

Behavior

When it senses danger, it spews an acidic liquid from its mouth. It targets Shelmet, presumably in order to evolve.

Trivia

  • Karrablast and Shelmet are the only Pokémon that have to be traded for a specific Pokémon to evolve, having to be traded for each other.

Origin

Karrablast and Escavalier seem to be based on the Japanese Snail-eating Beetle (damaster blaptoides) or the maimaikaburi due the fact they feed on snails and having an elongated head/thorax allowing it to get right up into the snail shell.

Karrablast and Shelmet may be a reference to coevolution, where the evolution of one species is influenced by changes in another, closely related species. In this case, the relationship between predators and their prey.

Name origin

Karrablast may be a combination of κέρατο kérato (Greek for horn) and plastron (the underside or "belly" of a shelled creature). It may also be a corruption of Carabidae, the family of ground beetles.

Kaburumo is derived from 噛りつく kaburitsuku (to bite into or stick to, referring its species name).
