Trivia
- Horsea and its evolutions share the same species name with Dratini, its evolutions, and Salamence. They are all known as Dragon Pokémon.
- Even though Horsea is in the species Dragon, it is not a Template:Type2.
- It does, however, become a Dragon-type after its final evolution, can learn three Dragon-type moves by leveling up, and is in the Dragon egg group.
- In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Horsea claims that its Water Gun always hits. Water Gun's accuracy, however, can fall below 100%.
- In its original artwork, Horsea had a pair of fins instead of just one.
Origin
Horsea is based on a seahorse, though its ability to shoot ink resembles that of a squid. The fact that its known as the Dragon Pokémon might be a reference to Leafy sea dragons.
Name origin
Horsea's name is based on seahorse, with reversed syllables, and the diminutive word horsie. Its Japanese name is a misspelling of 竜 tatsu, dragon, which is part of the common name of a seahorse in Japanese, 竜の落し子 tatsu-no-otoshigo, lit. illegitimate child of a dragon.

- French: Hypotrempe - A play on hippocampe (seahorse) and trempé (soaked).
- Korean: 쏘드라 Ssodeura
- Chinese (Taiwan): 墨海馬 Mò Hǎi Mǎ - "Ink seahorse".
