Rotom (Japanese: ロトム Rotom) is a dual-type Electric-type Pokémon.

While it is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon, it has the ability to possess the motors of certain appliances and change forms.

Depending on the game, its form can be changed at will in Rotom's Room in the Galactic Eterna Building, Rotom's Room in Silph Co., the store room in Shopping Mall Nine, or in Lumiose City at Professor Sycamore's Lab - 2F.

In Generation IV, it was Electric/Ghost regardless of its form.

Biology

Rotom transforming

Rotom has a body of plasma and shaped like a lightning rod. There is a whitish blue aura of electricity around it that forms lightning bolt-shaped arms. It has teeth, and its unique, blue eyes have a dividing line across them. As seen in the anime, Rotom will often pull pranks on unsuspecting people.

Rotom and the appliances

Rotom has the ability to enter and control appliances. Starting in Platinum, it also has five extra forms, each based on a household appliance, which can be accessed by possessing specific appliances. The possessed appliances are based on a microwave oven (Heat Rotom), washing machine (Wash Rotom), refrigerator (Frost Rotom), electric fan (Fan Rotom), and a lawnmower (Mow Rotom). Rotom's eyes and electric aura will change colors and it gains differently-shaped aura appendages when it changes form: red with oven mitts for Heat Rotom, blue with clothespins as Wash Rotom, purple with lightning bolts as Frost Rotom, yellow with air curls as Fan Rotom, and green with a ripped strip as Mow Rotom.

Major appearances

Rotom made its debut appearance in Get Your Rotom Running! in all its different forms, toying around with Ash and his friends.

Three Rotom appeared in To Catch a Rotom!, taking on all of their different forms. One of them was eventually caught by Professor Oak. This Rotom has since appeared in Butterfree and Me!, BW142 and XY003. It is a prankster, often scaring Ash by appearing over the video phone whenever he calls Professor Oak. It also appears in Professor Oak's Holo Caster, helping Professor Oak with his explanation, and often laughing at him when he gets hurt.

Wash Rotom in Pokémon Pocket Monsters

In Pokémon Adventures, Rotom appeared at the Old Chateau where it caused havoc for Diamond and Pearl until Diamond eventually caught it when it was hiding in the television. The same Rotom made another appearance when Diamond and Pearl returned to the Old Chateau to try to protect it from Charon. Like in its previous appearance, Rotom caused havoc for the boys and ran away to the Galactic Eterna Building where it transformed into its 5 forms and attacked them. Eventually Diamond found out it was just trying to play with them and bonded with it. After telling Rotom of their plan to protect it, Rotom decided to join them.

In the Pokémon Pocket Monsters manga

A Rotom appears in PMDP46 along with all of its forms.

Trivia

  • When Rotom is encountered in the Old Chateau in Diamond, Pearl and Platinum, the music is the same as legendary encounters, although it is not usually classified as one. Rotom is, to date, the only non-legendary Pokémon to do this.
  • Rotom has the most interchangeable forms of any non-legendary Pokémon.
  • When Rotom transforms, it learns a new move in the same way that other Pokémon may learn new moves upon evolving. The move is replaced by another if Rotom possesses another object, and is deleted when Rotom transforms back to its normal form. If the only move that Rotom knows right before reverting to its original form is exclusive to its alternate form, then that move will be replaced with ThunderShock.
  • Rotom's alternate forms, along with Arceus's forms, were the only alternate forms of a Pokémon not featured in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Sky. However, despite being introduced a year before the game was released like Rotom, Shaymin and Giratina's alternate forms made an appearance in the game.
  • When transformed, Rotom has the highest Special Defense base stat of all Electric types.

Generation V type change

  • Rotom is only the third Pokémon to have its types changed, after Magnemite and Magneton: its alternate forms, while sharing the Electric/Ghost type combination with normal Rotom in Generation IV, have their Ghost type exchanged for the type of move they learn from Generation V onward, with Heat Rotom being Electric/Fire, Wash Rotom being Electric/Water, Fan Rotom being Electric/Flying, Frost Rotom being Electric/Ice, and Mow Rotom being Electric/Grass.
    • This makes Rotom the only Pokémon to have its type changed to a pre-existing type.
  • No other Pokémon has the same type combination as Normal, Heat, Frost, and Mow Rotom.
  • Despite becoming part Flying-type, Fan Rotom retains the Ability Levitate, being the only Flying-type Pokémon with this Ability, which grants it a 'double immunity' to Ground-type moves.
    • In Inverse battles, Fan Rotom is still protected from Ground moves due to Levitate, making it the only Flying-type Pokémon to not be affected by Ground-type moves.
  • All of Rotom's appliance forms except Mow Rotom are tied for or have the fewest weaknesses of all Pokémon of their secondary types.

Origin

Rotom appears to be based on Pulseman, who was actually designed by Pokémon designer Ken Sugimori, although it may also be inspired by the unexplained phenomenon of ball lightning. Its Pokédex entry brings to mind gremlins. Its possession of other objects may be based on poltergeists or tsukumogami.

Name origin

Rotom is motor backwards; this may refer to the fact that motors make many appliances function, while Rotom makes them fail.

In Pokémon Platinum, it is revealed that Charon discovered and named the first known Rotom. It appeared out of his toy robot, and he named it Rotom due to its origin.
