The Flying Taxi (Japanese: そらとぶタクシー Flying Taxi) is a form of public transportation service in Galar, Paldea, and Kitakami. These taxis are carriages pulled by a Corviknight in Galar, a flock of Squawkabilly in Paldea, and a flock of Noctowl in Kitakami, and are piloted by a Cabbie. In Galar, the Flying Taxi is provided by the Galar Taxi (Japanese: ガラル交通 Galar Transport) company.

Flying Taxis are used to travel immediately to certain previously visited locations (such as Pokémon Centers) free of charge, effectively acting as a replacement for Fly, Charizard Glide, and Sky Dash from previous generations. They typically cannot be used in indoor areas such as buildings and caves.

In Pokémon Sword and Shield, after the player attends the opening ceremony for the Gym Challenge in Motostoke Stadium, they are granted access to Flying Taxis by a League Staff member upon exiting the stadium, after which they can use the taxi from the Town Map or the Habitat screen of the Pokédex.

In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, Flying Taxis are available to the player from the Rotom Phone's map app as soon as it is obtained. Unlike in Pokémon Sword and Shield, Flying Taxis can be used in caves.

In addition to the Flying Taxis the player regularly uses, there is a local Flying Taxi in Wyndon, located in front of the Rose of the Rondelands hotel and in front of Wyndon Stadium. This taxi will take the player to and from the two aforementioned locations, the Monorail Station, and (after the player becomes Champion) the Battle Tower. A local Flying Taxi also appears in Zapapico, but unlike the one in Wyndon, it is not usable by the player.

Destinations

Like Fly and its other counterparts, the Flying Taxi typically takes the player to an area's Pokémon Center. All Pokémon Centers are available as destinations, including in cities with multiple. All watchtowers in Paldea are also available destinations, as well as each of the Ten Sights of Paldea and Six Wonders of Kitakami. A destination is only available to the player if they have visited it before.

The Flying Taxi service has a recurring role throughout the miniseries.

It debuted in Letter, where Chairman Rose and Oleana used it to travel from Wyndon Stadium to a children's hospital and then back.

In Training, Bea traveled to the Wild Area in a Flying Taxi. However, she accidentally left her smartphone in the taxicab, which prevented her from calling for help when she and her Pokémon were trapped in a cave. The cab reappeared at the end of the episode, where the Cabbie driving it returned the phone to Bea.

In Buddy, Milo called the service so it could return Hop's runaway Wooloo. The cab was then used to take Hop and Wooloo home after they reunited.

In Early-Evening Waves, Nessa took a Flying Taxi to go to Rose's office and then to Wyndon Stadium.

In Assistant, Chairman Rose spotted Oleana from the sky and picked Oleana up and took a Flying Taxi together while heading back to his office.

In Moonlight, Allister and Tommy took a Flying Taxi to go to the hospital where John is staying so that Tommy could apologize to and amend his friendship with John.

In Sky, all of the children from the hospital took a Flying Taxi to Wyndon Stadium for one of Leon's matches. John took a Flying Taxi late, having overslept for Leon's match. He spotted Leon getting lost on a mountain on the way and picked him up. However, they were forced to proceed on foot in order to make it to the match in time. The next day, Victor and Gloria approached the Flying Taxi, requesting for a ride.

In The Gathering of Stars, Leon took a Flying Taxi all across the Galar region to hand out invitation letters for the Galarian Star Tournament.

In Grrr!! Noble Kidnappers, Sonia was seen traveling towards Henry and Casey's location on Route 9 aboard a Flying Taxi. However, as she was flying over Route 7, the Flying Taxi was attacked by Shielbert's Klinklang, causing it to crash-land.

Another Corviknight acting as a Flying Taxi appeared in PASS25. This one was one of many Pokémon to suddenly Dynamax due to the Darkest Day.

In PASS31, Casey and Marvin used a Flying Taxi to travel to the Isle of Armor.

Trivia

  • The Flying Taxi was based on a Hackney carriage.[1]
  • In Pokémon Sword and Shield, when the player takes the train to or from the Armor Station, they will automatically use a Flying Taxi to enter or leave the Isle of Armor, as seen in the animation that plays when the player first goes to the island. This will happen even if the player has not yet unlocked Flying Taxis.
  • In Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, going between Paldea and Kitakami shows an animation of a plane on the loading screen rather than a Flying Taxi, despite still being referred to as a Flying Taxi on the map.
  • Braviary's Pokémon Shield Pokédex entry implies that it was originally considered to work as the Flying Taxi Pokémon, but due to its hotheaded and belligerent nature, this role was given to Corviknight instead.
  • Both Tinkaton and Corviknight's Pokémon Scarlet Pokédex entries suggest that due to Tinkaton's tendency to knock rocks at flying Corviknight, the Flying Taxi role in Paldea was given to Squawkabilly instead to avoid endangering customers.
