Unofficial Beckett Pokémon Collector Price Guide is a book released by Beckett Publications in 2000. Like the Beckett Pokémon Unofficial Collector magazine, it primarily focuses on the Pokémon Trading Card Game but also contains content related to various other merchandise and promotional material that was prevalent in the United States at the height of Pokémon's first wave of popularity.
Content
- The Pokémon Timeline — The book opens with a preface detailing the origins of Pokémon with its creator Satoshi Tajiri and key milestones for the franchise from launch in 1996 through to events scheduled for the end of 2000, such as the release of Pokémon the Movie 2000: The Power of One.
- The Pokémon Numbers Game — This page contains eight numbers that described achievements of the franchise at the time of the book's publication, such as the amount of money grossed by Pokémon: The First Movie during its first week at the box office in the United States.
- Identifying Counterfeit Products — This section describes the various tell tale signs of fake Pokémon cards and toys for cautious collectors. It features an interview with the public relations manager of Nintendo of America, Beth LLewelyn, on the subject of counterfeits.
- Card Anatomy — This section labels all the different elements of a Pokémon Trading Card, including Hit Points, Evolution Stage and Rarity Symbol using a Base Set 1st Edition Blastoise as an example.
- How to use our Price Guide —
- Price Guide and Checklist for Pokémon #1 to #251 — This is the largest section in the guide and features a dedicated page for each Pokémon with a checklist and prices for the various cards and merchandise that featured them. It uses the infamous unofficial artwork for each character produced by Beckett for use in its publications, and was for many readers their first glimpse of the upcoming Pokémon from Generation 2. At the time of publication, the English names for these upcoming Pokémon had not been announced, so the guide uses romanisations of their Japanese names.
- Price Guide and Checklist for Pokémon Toys — This section contains images, price guides and checklists of various Pokémon Toys that were available at the time, including the Hasbro Battle Figures and promotional items such as those released in the 1999 Burger King Pokémon Promotion.
- Price Guide and Checklist for Pokémon Comic Books — This one pager comprises a checklist and prices for Viz Media comics available at the time, including The Electric Tale of Pikachu.
- Price Guide and Checklist for Pokémon Card Sets — This section contains a comprehensive full card checklist and price guide for all the cards released in the TCG up until that point, including those released in Japanese, French and German.
- Holographics Price Guide — This section focuses solely on Holofoil cards, with scans and price guides for selected popular cards from the English Base Set, Jungle and Fossil expansions, and the Japanese releases of Team Rocket, Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge.
- Just Arrived! Here Comes Team Rocket — This section introduces the English language release of the Team Rocket of the Pokémon TCG, released shortly before publication of the guide, with a card checklist and high resolution scans of a selection of cards from the set.
