Pearl (Japanese: パール Pearl) is the rival character in Pokémon Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum.
The character Pearl from the Pokémon Special manga is based on this Pearl. A version of the character also appears in the Pokémon DP manga.
This particular rival also appears on the Rival card in the Diamond & Pearl and Secret Wonders expansions of the Pokémon Trading Card Game.
Pearl is always in a hurry and extremely impatient, and because of this, often crashes into other people or misses important details. He is incredibly determined and it is very difficult to discourage him; the only thing that has done this so far was his crushing loss to the Team Galactic Commander, Jupiter at Lake Acuity, although this defeat lead to a major positive change in Pearl's character, becoming slightly more serious, realistic, and mature. He is also quite the braggart, often boasting about his battling prowess or how cool his Pokémon are. Pearl does have a soft side however, as seen after the wild Starly attack.
Pearl is also one to take risks and quickly jump into action; it was this behavior that caused the player and himself to be attacked by wild Starly, setting off the chain reaction that would result in the player receiving his/her first Pokémon.
After becoming the Sinnoh League Champion, the player can find him training at Stark Mountain during the week, and at the Fight Area on weekends in Diamond and Pearl, ready to battle. He can be found at the Survival Area everyday in Platinum but he can only be battled on weekends. He desires to get into the Battleground, even asking Crasher Wake's help. Unlike the player and Lucas/Dawn, Pearl did not receive a Pokédex, due to him rushing out of Professor Rowan's lab before Rowan could give him one.
His father is Palmer, one of the Sinnoh Battle Frontier's five Frontier Brains. Pearl wants to be like him, so he trains hard.

In the Japanese versions, if the player doesn't give a name for the rival, he will be automatically named パール Pearl in Diamond. In Pearl, the name ダイヤ Dia is automatically given. In Platinum, either Dia or Pearl will be randomly selected. The same is the case for other versions of the games, choosing either "Diamond" or "Pearl" based on the game being played. The only reason the Japanese games use ダイヤ rather than the full ダイヤモンド for "Diamond" is because a Trainer's name is restricted to five characters, while elsewhere the restriction is seven.

Trivia
- Pearl has achieved a high score of 2000 at Pal Park, which serves as the default high score.
- Although Pearl can only be battled on weekends, if the player saves the game in front of him on a Sunday in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, he can still be battled on weekdays if the player does not leave the Fight Area (even to go to the Pokémon Center) during the periods of time in between. This was corrected in Pokémon Platinum.
- Strangely, among the default names for him in the Japanese version of Pokémon Diamond is Shigeru, one of the names that are default in both Pokémon Red and Pokémon FireRed for Blue. "Gary" is also one of the optional names for him in the German and Italian-language versions of Pokémon Diamond. Gary's Korean Name, 바람 Baram can also be found among optional names for him in Korean-language version. Another point of similarity can perhaps be found in the fact that a relative of theirs is well-known in the Pokémon world, being the Frontier Brain of Sinnoh's Battle Tower in Pearl's case, and being a Pokémon professor in the case of Blue. Furthermore, both rivals are childhood acquaintances of the playable characters who go on to compete against them in collecting Gym badges, unlike Silver and Wally. Finally, Pearl uses the Starly line, while Blue uses the Pidgey line; they both use Heracross at some point in their respective games.
- All Japanese default names for Pearl come from game staff members' first names. They are all listed in the game's credits. Jun is from Junichi Masuda, production director and music composer. Shigeru is from Shigeru Ōmori, game design leader. Kōji comes from Kōji Nishino, a game designer. Toshinobu is from Toshinobu Matsumiya, game scenario author. Hisashi is from Hisashi Sogabe, battle system programmer. Sōsuke is from Sōsuke Tamada, field system programmer. Akito is from Akito Mori, communication system programmer and Nozomu is from Nozomu Saito, also one of the programmers.
- Pearl has a Pokétch; however, it is orange, while the player can only have a blue one (if playing as Lucas) or a pink one (if playing as Dawn). This is even stated by an old lady in Oreburgh City, who notes that blue and pink are the only colors that are produced by The Pokétch Company.
- Pearl has the highest level trained Pokémon in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl, namely his Level 74 Torterra/Infernape/Empoleon after defeating the Elite Four 20 times. Arceus, Red's Pikachu (as well as the rest of Red's party, save Espeon), Steven's entire post-League Emerald party, and Blue's starter still outclass him, however.
- In Platinum, his team has significantly increased levels, with his starter Pokémon becoming the highest-leveled Trainer-owned Pokémon in the series (even beating Red's Pikachu) at level 85.
- Of the three main characters of Sinnoh's games, Pearl is the only one whose outfit remains much the same between Diamond and Pearl and Platinum, with his shirt's sleeves lengthened (though it could be argued, and is in fact the case with their Pokémon Special and anime counterparts, that Dawn and Lucas merely are wearing heavier coats over their normal outfits).
- Unlike rivals for the Generation II and III games, who have had only cameo appearances, Pearl has an major anime counterpart in Barry, making him the first game rival since Blue to do so.
