Defog (Japanese: きりばらい Fog Wipe) is a non-damaging Template:Type2 move, introduced in Generation IV. It is HM05 in Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum, moving the traditional HM05, Flash, to TM70. However, in HeartGold and SoulSilver, it loses its HM status in favor of Whirlpool.

Defog cannot be used outside of battle without the Pastoria City Gym badge in Diamond and Pearl and the Hearthome City Gym badge in Platinum.

Effect

In battle

Defog clears away fog and in-battle obstacles on the target's side of the field, including Light Screen, Reflect, Safeguard, Mist, as well as Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Stealth Rock present on the target's side of the field. It also lowers the target's Evasion one stage.

Out of battle

Defog clears away fog from the area. The effect lasts until the player leaves the area.

Trivia

• The bag sprite for the HM containing Defog is mistakenly that of a Template:Type2 HM, rather than a Template:Type2 one. This is perhaps due to the fact that Defog later lost its HM status to the Water-type Whirlpool in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver.
• While it is not the first HM move to lose its status as one, Defog is the first HM move that lost its status before the end of a generation.
• Although Defog wasn't introduced until Generation IV, the anime had Ash's Pidgeotto use Gust or Whirlwind in the exact same way many times.
