Golurk (Japanese: ゴルーグ Goloog) is a dual-type Ground/Ghost Pokémon introduced in Generation V.

It evolves from Golett starting at level 43.

Biology

Golurk is a bipedal automaton Pokémon resembling a suit of armor. It is mainly teal in color with yellow swirls on its shoulders and hands. It has a small head compared to its body, and pale yellow eyes, one of which turns to its left at the bottom, unlike Golett's eye, which turns right. There is a crack across the chest of the armor, which is patched diagonally with a brown seal resembling a belt. It has a crystal-like formation on each shoulder, and there are large bangles on its wrists and ankles. It has a Roman armor-like "skirt" and flat feet beneath. There is an unproven theory that Golurk contains a perpetual motion machine that creates a limitless amount of energy.

Despite its large size, Golurk is capable of flying by retracting its hands into its arms and its legs and feet into its body, then taking off like a rocket at Mach speeds. It is also capable of forming a cannon by pulling its legs into its body and standing on its hands, as seen in PokéPark 2: Wonders Beyond, the anime, and Pokémon Adventures. If the seal on its chest is removed, its energy runs wild, and its energy's color turns from yellow to red. This causes it to rage and fly around uncontrollably without being able to land itself. Removing the seal also causes Golurk to attack indiscriminately.

Golurk is said to have been invented by ancient people to serve as a laborer and protector of people and Pokémon. It also served as sentries on artillery platforms built into the walls of ancient castles, where it could fire energy beams. Golurk will faithfully follow its master's orders without question.

Evolution

Golurk evolves from Golett.

(For specifics on this Pokémon's evolution in the games, refer to Game data→Evolution data.)

Major appearances

Goh's Golurk

In Raid Battle in The Ruins!, a giant Golurk was a guardian of the Colossus Ruins at the Desert Resort. After it hatched from an ancient egg, it engaged in a Raid Battle with Ash, Goh, Kira, and the excavation leader. Once Golurk was defeated, Goh caught it.

Other

In White—Victini and Zekrom and Black—Victini and Reshiram, Juanita's Golurk acts as her assistant and partner at her souvenir shop. It is also Shiny in the latter movie.

In An Epic Defense Force!, a Golurk was an illusion in a movie directed by Luke.

In Meloetta and the Undersea Temple! and Unova's Survival Crisis!, Ridley used a Golurk to fly with him, and it was also used to defend Meloetta from Team Rocket. It was also used to battle two Team Rocket Grunts' Golem and Rhydon. After that, it battled the Forces of Nature in their Therian Formes.

In Ash and N: A Clash of Ideals!, Team Plasma and the Awakening Ceremony!, and What Lies Beyond Truth and Ideals!, Cedric Juniper's assistants used multiple Golurk at the White Ruins, but they were later turned against their owners by Colress. They were eventually freed when Pikachu and Reshiram destroyed Colress's mind-control device.

In The Journalist from Another Region!, Rodney used a Golurk during the Pokémon Sumo Tournament. Golurk made it through to the final round and faced off against Ash and Pignite, but it ended up losing against them.

In That's Some Spicy Island Research!, Hapu's Golurk was first seen assisting her in a Poni Island radish field. It attacked Ash when Hapu believed he was the one who had been stealing radishes from the field, and defeated Pikachu in battle. Golurk has since made further appearances in Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon. Hapu commonly uses Golurk to fly around Poni Island.

Minor appearances

Golurk debuted in Movie Time! Zorua in "The Legend of the Pokémon Knight"!. It appeared as an actor in a movie based around the Wonder Launcher.

A Golurk appeared in Secrets of the Jungle.

Golurk seemed to be taking orders from Beheeyem as they guarded the ruins. They’re very mysterious, but the other Pokémon seem to be quite friendly with them.

Trivia

Origin

Golurk and its pre-evolved form are based on golems.[2] The crack and strap on its chest may be a reference to the golem in the Jewish story The Golem of Prague. The golem in this story was also believed to be able to summon the spirits of the dead, which was likely the reasoning for Golurk's Ghost type.

Considering its body structure and ability to transform into cannon and fly, Golurk may also be inspired by giant robots seen in mecha anime and manga. Golurk also has elements resembling a gladiator, such as a skirt and shoulder pads. Given its greenish color and the fact that Unova is based on the New York City metropolitan area, Golurk may also be partially inspired by the Statue of Liberty. Being the soldiers of an ancient civilisation, it may also be inspired by the Terracotta Army, a collection of thousands of clay statues in China built circa 210 BCE to protect the first Emperor of China, Qin Shi Huang.

Name origin

Golurk may be a combination of golem and lurk (referring to its Ghost type).

Goloog may be a combination of golem and サイボーグ saibōgu (cyborg).
