The route is distinguished by its flower gardens and small ponds. Several Pokémon Trainers can be found on Route 117, including Triathletes and Pokémon Breeders. There is also a patch of soft soil on the eastern side of the route. This is also the only area in Hoenn where Illumise, Volbeat, and Roselia can be caught. The Pokémon Day Care facility is located to the eastern side of the route. In Pokémon Emerald, there is a long, straight path through the route which extends west into Verdanturf Town and east beyond Mauville City to the coastline at Route 118.
Items can be found in some small areas of the route, but require Cut to access.

After a run-in with Team Rocket, May's Skitty was injured and the group was forced to take a detour to the nearest city, Foothill Town. Following recommendations from a local resident, the group visited a clinic and met Dr. Abby. It turned out that Dr. Abby was also a Top Coordinator, and she went on teach Skitty on how to use Blizzard and juggle objects with Double Slap.
Trivia
In Pokémon Emerald, the layout of this route was altered slightly, creating a straight path between Route 118 (east of Mauville City) and Verdanturf Town not present in Ruby and Sapphire. This was likely done to facilitate egg hatching.
