Gear (Japanese: 装備 Gear) is an item in Pokémon Masters EX that can be equipped to a player's team to boost the stats of sync pairs. It comes in two varieties: type gear, which applies bonuses to sync pairs based on their type, and skill gear, which applies bonuses to sync pairs based on their theme skills (which can include their type theme skill).
1★ and 2★ type gear can be obtained by completing Main Story Co-op battles (Very Hard and Super Hard modes) and EX Challenges in the EX Plaza. A specific gear is guaranteed as a first-time reward with these stages, and can thereafter be obtained as random battle rewards after repeating these stages. 3★ type gear can be obtained through gear events or by exchanging items in the shop. Skill gear can be obtained through the Get the New Gear! event or by exchanging items in the shop.
To unlock type gear, the player must first complete the story area Let the Tournament Begin! in Interlude 1: Brock's Grit. After completing this story area, Professor Bellis will give the player a 1★ Electric Bracelet. To unlock skill gear, the player must complete the Champion Stadium on Hard Lv. 1 difficulty for any region.
Mechanics
Gear comes in three forms: bracelets, bandannas, and pins. Only one of each category of gear can be equipped to a team at a time.
The exact stats which are boosted by gear can vary depending on whether it's type gear or skill gear and the ★ rarity of the gear, but generally speaking:
- Bracelets raise Attack.
- Bandannas raise Special Attack.
- Pins raise HP.
Type gear
Each piece of type gear has an associated type. Sync pairs that possess the matching theme skill for that type will receive the full stat boosts of the gear, while sync pairs that do not possess it receive only half of the gear's stat boosts, rounded down to the nearest integer.
A sync pair's theme skill usually corresponds with the type of the pair's sync move, but in cases where sync pairs can change the type of their sync move mid-battle (example: Gladion & Silvally), the theme skill corresponds to the sync move's default typing.
- In this example, Gladion & Silvally would receive the full stat boost from Normal-type gear, even if they change their sync move type mid-battle.

Upgrading type gear
The level of type gear can be upgraded to increase the stat boost that the gear provides.
- Increasing the level of a 1★ type gear raises its stat boost by 1.
- Increasing the level of a 2★ type gear raises its stat boost by 2.
- Increasing the level of a 3★ type gear raises its primary stat boost by 2 and its secondary stat boost by 1.
Initially, the gear level is capped at Lv. 3, but the level cap can be unlocked by exchanging duplicate copies of the same gear. Up to four gears can be exchanged to increase the level cap to Lv. 15.
1★ and 2★ gears are upgraded using Cloth of the respective type, as well as with Upgrade Threads, Scissors, and Needles which are used to upgrade Bracelets, Bandannas, and Pins respectively.
3★ gears do not use Cloths, and instead use type-specific Threads, Scissors, and Needles.

Skill gear
Unlike type gear, skill gear has no effect by default. The player must use a Skill Feather on a piece of gear in order to unlock skills for it. The skills for skill gear are divided into three groups:
- Themes are the theme skills to which the bonuses apply. Sync pairs who do not match the theme skills do not receive any benefits from the gear.
- Base stats are the stats that are increased by the gear. These stat bonuses only apply to sync pairs who match the gear's themes.
- Additional Effects are additional benefits that are unique to skill gear. They typically increase the power of attacks or decrease the damage received from attacks under certain conditions, though the increase or decrease is only by a small percentage.
All the skills are randomly selected from the pool of skills available for that Skill Feather each time a Skill Feather is used. Players can use an item called an Ever Pin to protect a theme or Additional Effect, which prevents it from being overwritten when a new Skill Feather is used on that piece of gear. Only one theme and one Additional Effect can be protected on a piece of gear at a time.
Tapping and holding a piece of skill gear on the Unlock Skills screen will allow the player to view all the skills unlocked for it, as well as change the name of the gear. A gear's name can be up to 12 characters long.
Unlocking skills
One to three stat buffs are chosen at random from certain ranges, which vary depending on the type of gear the Skill Feather is used on. The type of Skill Feather used does not matter for stat buffs, unless it is a Special Skill Feather, which is guaranteed to unlock certain stats. Each type of gear is guaranteed to boost one specific stat, which is highlighted in yellow in the following table.
Stat | Bracelet | Bandanna | Pin | ||
---|---|---|---|---|---|
HP | 10–30 | 10–30 | 40–100 | ||
Attack | 40–80 | N/A | 10–20 | ||
Defense | 10–30 | N/A | 10–20 | ||
Sp. Atk | N/A | 40–80 | 10–20 | ||
Sp. Def | N/A | 10–30 | 10–20 | ||
Speed | N/A | N/A | 10–30 |
One to three themes are chosen at random. The type of gear the Skill Feather is used on and the type of Skill Feather used does not matter for themes, unless it is a Special Skill Feather, which is guaranteed to unlock certain themes. Each theme has an equal chance (2.94%) of being selected. The only theme skills that can be selected are the following:
One to three Additional Effects are chosen at random, which vary depending on the Skill Feather used. The type of gear the Skill Feather is used on does not matter for Additional Effects. There are eight different types of skill feathers:
- Red Skill Feathers only unlock additional effects that boost the power of a sync pair's moves.
- Pink Skill Feathers only unlock additional effects that boost the power of a sync pair's sync moves.
- Blue Skill Feathers only unlock additional effects that reduce the damage taken from opposing moves and/or sync moves.
- Green Skill Feathers unlock additional effects that do any of the above, but they often only activate when the opposing sync pair is affected by a status or interference condition.
- Purple Skill Feathers unlock additional effects that do any of the above, but they often only activate when a specific weather, terrain, or zone is active.
- White Skill Feathers unlock additional effects that do any of the above, but they often only activate for moves or sync moves of a certain type.
- Yellow Skill Feathers can unlock any additional effect.
- Special Skill Feathers unlock predetermined base stats, themes, and additional effects.
The following table lists all the Additional Effects that can be unlocked by each type of skill feather.
Exchanging gear
Unwanted type gear can be exchanged at the shop, in return for coins and type-specific Thread / Scissors / Needle materials. Notably, this is the only way to obtain the latter, which are required for upgrading 3★ type gear. Skill gear, however, cannot be exchanged.
The type and categories of materials obtained will match the type and category of the gear piece sold.
- For example: selling a Psychic Bandanna will yield Psychic Scissors.
The amount of coins and materials received depends on the rarity of the gear sold, the gear's current level, and how many times the gear's level cap has been raised.
- Each gear effectively has a "base value" when sold at Lv. 1 with no upgrades and no level cap increases.
- For each time the gear's level has been raised (not counting Lv. 1), add the base value's coins, and add 50% of the base value's materials.
- For each time the gear's level cap has been raised, do not add the base value's coins, but add 100% of the base value's materials.
Rarity | Base value | Bonus per level (after Lv. 1) | Bonus per level cap raise |
---|---|---|---|
1★ gear | 50 coins Type-specific Thread / Scissors / Needle ×10 |
50 coins Type-specific Thread / Scissors / Needle ×5 |

2★ gear | 100 coins Type-specific Thread / Scissors / Needle ×20 |
100 coins Type-specific Thread / Scissors / Needle ×10 |
Type-specific Thread / Scissors / Needle ×20 |
3★ gear | 150 coins Type-specific Thread / Scissors / Needle ×40 |
150 coins Type-specific Thread / Scissors / Needle ×20 |
Type-specific Thread / Scissors / Needle ×40 |
The Exchange Gear menu can be accessed either from the shop menu directly or from the Upgrade Gear menu. The player can select up to 50 pieces of gear at a time to exchange, or select the Exchange All button to exchange all their eligible gear at once. Tapping the lock icon on a piece of type gear in the Upgrade Gear menu will lock the gear, which prevents it from being sold to the shop. This also protects it from being sold when Exchange All is tapped.

Special gears
Special gears have been made available during certain events. These grant different stat bonuses than the standard gear of the same type and level, but their upgrade requirements are the same. As with standard gears, the stat bonuses are halved for sync pairs that do not match the gear type.

List of gear-upgrade items
Much like gear, gear-upgrade items can be obtained by completing Main Story (Co-op) battles and EX-Challenges in the EX Plaza.
- 1★ and 2★ items can drop directly from these battles.
- The type-based items (essentially 3★ items) cannot drop from any battles, and can only be obtained by exchanging unwanted gear in the shop.
