Pokémon world locations |
The Dragon's Den (Japanese: りゅうのあな Dragon's Den) is a location in Blackthorn City in the Johto region.
In the games
The Dragon's Den is inaccessible before defeating Clair in the Blackthorn Gym, as it is blocked off by a man in front of the cave. After defeating Clair, it must be traversed to obtain the Rising Badge.
In Pokémon Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, several Trainers can be found in the cave. The Dragon Shrine (Japanese: りゅうのほこら Dragon Shrine) is located in the south end (blocked off by a whirlpool), where the Master will quiz the player on their attitude towards and treatment of their Pokémon. After the quiz is completed, they will be rewarded with a Dratini. If they got all the answers right the first time, the Dratini will know ExtremeSpeed.
Silver can be found here contemplating his training on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Clair will visit to reward the player with the Rising Badge she refused to award in the Blackthorn Gym, as well as TM24 (DragonBreath)GSC or TM59 (Dragon Pulse)HGSS. This requires completing the quiz described above. In Pokémon Gold and Silver, where the Dragon Shrine is closed and everything related to it is unavailable, Clair will instead give the Rising Badge to the player after they collect the Dragon Fang. If the Dragon Fang from Dragon's Den is not obtained, but the player has one anyways, usually from trading from another Trainer, Clair will call the player a cheater and refuse to give the badge.
In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, after the player battles Silver at Mt. Moon, they can participate in a Multi Battle with him against Lance and Clair here. Additionally, in these games, if the player receives the Rising Badge from Clair and then leaves the Dragon's Den with Dig, Teleport, or an Escape Rope, then they must return to her Gym in order to collect the TM.

Master's quiz
In Pokémon Crystal, HeartGold and SoulSilver, it is possible to obtain a Dratini with ExtremeSpeed, a move it cannot normally learn in Generation II and IV.
|
|
It is a prize for correctly answering the questions given by the Master in the Dragon Shrine. If any wrong answers are given, the player will still receive a Dratini but it will have Leer instead of ExtremeSpeed.
Question | Correct answer(s) | Wrong answer(s) |
---|---|---|
What are Pokémon to you? | PalC / AllyHGSS Friend |
UnderlingC / JuniorHGSS |
What helps you to win battles? | Strategy RaisingC / TrainingHGSS |
Cheating |
What kind of Trainer do you wish to battle? | AnybodyC / AnyoneHGSS Tough personC |
StrongHGSS Weak personC / WeakHGSS |
What is most important for raising Pokémon? | Love Knowledge |
Violence |
Strong Pokémon. Weak Pokémon. Which is more important? | Both | ToughC / StrengthHGSS WeakC / WeaknessHGSS |
After completing the quiz, the player will then need to receive TM24 (DragonBreath)C or TM59 (Dragon Pulse)HGSS from Clair. After this, returning to the Master will result in him giving the Dratini to the player.
Layout
Of note is that Pokémon Crystal's redesign of the Dragon's Den added Headbutt trees to the back of the Dragon Shrine. Despite this, no Pokémon can be found hiding in them. In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver's redesign, the Headbutt trees are absent, much like in its original design from Pokémon Gold and Silver.

In the anime
The Dragon's Den appeared in Fangs For Nothin', where it was reduced to a series of tunnels leading to the Dragon Holy Land. The Dragon Holy Land takes over for the Dragon's Den's other roles in the anime, including the location of the Dragon Shrine and the Dragon Fang.
In the manga
Pokémon Adventures
Gold, Silver & Crystal arc
The Dragon's Den appeared in Debonaire Dragonair. Clair encountered and battled Suicune here, but failed to defeat and catch it. According to Clair, only the Pokémon living on the site with her family are allowed here.
Trivia
- Dragon's Den is the only location where the player obtains a Gym Badge that is not a Gym.
- In Pokémon Crystal, if the player whites out due to poison damage while still inside the Dragon Shrine after receiving the Rising Badge, they can return to the Blackthorn Gym to receive the reward TM from Clair. However, if the player then returns to Dragon's Den and stands on the tile directly in front of the Dragon Shrine's door, Clair will appear again and give the player another TM24.
