The player receives a Sparkling Stone from Tapu Koko in recognition of their bravery in protecting Nebby from a swarm of wild Spearow. After receiving their starter Pokémon, Hala recognizes the stone, and upon realizing that the player has been recognized by the guardian deity of Melemele Island, offers to refine it. The player receives the finished product, a Z-Ring, after completing the ceremony battle with Hau. As the player proceeds through the island challenge, they will receive Z-Crystals for their Ring from the Captains and Island Kahunas.

Being a part of the rites of passage in Alola, Z-Rings are much more widely distributed in comparison to Key Stones in Kalos and Hoenn. All Kahunas, members of the Alola Elite Four, and most captains use Z-Rings in battle against the player. Other key characters, such as Professor Kukui, Hau, and Gladion, have or obtain Z-Rings over the course of the story. The player will even battle the occasional minor character Trainer who will use a Z-Ring, usually after defeating all other Trainers in their given area.

Contrary to the lore, the player is never required to equip a specific Z-Crystal on their Z-Ring. The player can use any Z-Move so long as their Pokémon is holding an appropriate Z-Crystal and has an appropriate move.

A Z-Ring (Japanese: リング Z-Ring) is a Key Item introduced in Generation VII. It is a bracelet that allows a Trainer and their Pokémon to gather the Z-Power required to perform Z-Moves.

In Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, it is replaced by the Z-Power Ring, which can use more Z-Moves than the original Z-Ring.

A Z-Ring is made by refining a Sparkling Stone. Z-Rings have a slot in the center where the wearer can insert a Z-Crystal as well as multiple other slots to store Z-Crystals not in use.

The player receives a Sparkling Stone from Tapu Koko in recognition of their bravery in protecting Nebby from a swarm of wild Spearow. After receiving their first partner Pokémon, Hala recognizes the stone, and upon realizing that the player has been recognized by the guardian deity of Melemele Island, offers to refine it.

A Z-Ring in the anime
Various Z-Ring designs in the anime

The first Z-Ring seen in the anime was Kiawe's Z-Ring, which debuted in Alola to New Adventure!. In Young Kiawe Had a Farm!, Kiawe revealed that his Z-Ring used to belong to his grandfather, and was passed down to him once he cleared Olivia's grand trial.

Also in Alola to New Adventure!, Ash received a Z-Ring from Tapu Koko, fitted with an Electrium Z. Although the Electrium Z shattered during Ash's battle with Tapu Koko in The Guardian's Challenge!, he has since then started collecting new Z-Crystals by clearing trials. In To Top a Totem!, it was revealed that Hala makes his own Z-Rings and that Ash's Z-Ring was in fact Hala's Z-Ring that had been taken by Tapu Koko.

As in the games, each island kahuna carries a Z-Ring in the anime, fitted with a Z-Crystal of their specialty type. The first of these appeared in To Top a Totem!, belonging to Hala. He was first seen using it in Trial and Tribulation! during his battle with Ash in the Melemele grand trial. Olivia's Z-Ring first appeared in The Island Whisperer!, but was first used in Trials and Determinations! during her battle with Ash in the Akala grand trial. Nanu used his Z-Ring in Guiding an Awakening! to perform Black Hole Eclipse with his Alolan Persian during his battle with Ash in the Ula'ula grand trial. Hapu was shown to own a Z-Ring in That's Some Spicy Island Research!, although she was not a kahuna yet at the time. In Showdown on Poni Island!, she revealed that she had received her Z-Ring from her grandfather, a former kahuna of Poni Island. She was first seen using it in A Grand Debut! after becoming a kahuna during her grand trial against Ash.

A Z-Ring belonging to Gladion first appeared in A Glaring Rivalry!.

Oluolu, a Pokémon Base player, was shown to own a Z-Ring in Pulling Out the Pokémon Base Pepper!. He uses it with his Snorlium Z to have his Snorlax perform its signature Z-Move: Pulverizing Pancake.

In Treasure Hunt, Akala Style!, Lana found a Sparkling Stone during a Stoutland Search treasure hunt set up for Ash and his classmates by Olivia. The Akala Island kahuna took the Sparkling Stone to be converted into a Z-Ring. In Big Sky, Small Fry!, she handed the completed Z-Ring back to Lana, who immediately placed her newly-obtained Waterium Z into it.

Ida, a member of the seafolk, was shown to own a Z-Ring in Balloons, Brionne, and Belligerence!.

In Revealing the Stuff of Legend!, Ash received a Solganium Z from the newly evolved Nebby. Upon receiving it, Ash tried to fit the Z-Crystal in his Z-Ring, only to find it didn't fit. Upon seeing this, Tapu Koko took his Z-Ring and passed it among its fellow deities, each one blessing it. After being blessed with the Tapu's power, it became a Z-Power Ring, and could hold the Solganium Z.

In Pushing the Fiery Envelope!, Professor Kukui was revealed to own a Z-Ring. He initially only used it under his Battle Royal master alias of the Masked Royal. Once his secret identity was exposed to the public, he also used it in his Manalo Conference exhibition match with Ash.

In Turning Heads and Training Hard!, Ilima was shown to own a Z-Ring. He can use it in conjunction with his Eevium Z, allowing his Eevee to perform Extreme Evoboost.

Pikala, a Pikachu-loving girl living in Pikachu Valley, was shown to own a Z-Ring in A Plethora of Pikachu!. She uses it in conjunction with her Pikanium Z to perform Catastropika along with her Shiny Pikachu, the Boss.

In Parallel Friendships!, Dia was shown to own a Z-Ring. He uses it in conjunction with his Electrium Z to perform Gigavolt Havoc with his partner, Zeraora.

In The Secret Princess!, Lillie discovered a Z-Ring that once belonged to her father in his secret room at her home. By Gladion's suggestion and Hala's approval, she decided to hold on to it and use it until her father was found.

In A High-Speed Awakening!, Sophocles received a Z-Ring from Hapu after hearing how he had helped to save the participating Pokémon of the Vikavolt race from Team Rocket.

In A Recipe for Success!, Mallow received an old Z-Ring from Oranguru as thanks for her help in its forest café. Olivia subsequently cleaned up and repaired it before giving it back to Mallow.

In League Offenders and Defenders!, Hau was revealed to have obtained a Z-Ring after clearing his grandfather Hala's grand trial.

In Battle Royal 151!, Hiroki was revealed to have obtained a Z-Ring. However, he was defeated and thus eliminated from the Manalo Conference before he ever got a chance to use it.

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc

In The Delivery of Rotom and the Girl, Sun received a Sparkling Stone from Tapu Koko. In The Party Crasher and Guzma the Destroyer, Sun used the Sparkling Stone as a splint for his broken arm. When angered by Gladion in The Final Match and a Surprising Finale!, Sun accidentally used the Z-Move Inferno Overdrive with his Dollar, defeating Gladion's Type: Null. Due to the strain of using the attack, Sun immediately passed out from exhaustion. Hala took the Sparkling Stone in order to convert it into a Z-Ring for Sun to use. Once completed, Hala had Kahili deliver it to Sun at the Ruins of Life.

In Pokémon Move Specialist Professor Kukui, Olivia and her Midnight Form Lycanroc attempted to use Continental Crush against Nanu and his Alolan Persian, who retaliated with Black Hole Eclipse. The attacks were stopped by Hala, who didn't want them to destroy the battle field they were fighting on.

In The Wild Full-Power Pose of Fire, Kiawe is revealed to own a Z-Ring, which he received as a Sparkling Stone from Tapu Lele five years prior to the Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc. He intended to have Sun borrow it to battle Gladion, but it was destroyed by Gladion's Type: Null, leaving only the Sparkling Stone intact. It was later repaired by Olivia and returned to him.

In Shock!! Father in the Pendant!, Hau was revealed to have managed to obtain a Sparkling Stone while training, with Olivia having subsequently converted it into a Z-Ring for him.

In Tyrant!! The Fiendish Man!, after completing their six months of training on Exeggutor Island, Lana, Mallow, and Sophocles were shown to have obtained Z-Rings.

In Transcend!! Ultra Necrozma!, Sun discovered that his Z-Ring had somehow turned into a Z-Power Ring at some point. Soliera theorized that the change could have been caused by Sun passing through Ultra Wormholes or him returning to Alola from Ultra Space.
