I know this is an old conversation but I feel like this solution is inadequate. I couldn't find any information on these extra effects except in the individual pages and right here in the discussion page. I can't even find a mention in the article that they can have effects outside of battle. If nobody tells me otherwise I'll try fixing it myself eventually but I'm not comfortable making a change this size without some agreement. ::I think the best way to do this would be to mention in the mechanics section that some abilities have an effect out of battle, with a link to the category. (The code required to link to the category rather than categorising the page can be seen in trom's comments above). <span class="sc"><span style="color:#2D4B98;">Werdnae</span></span> <small><span style="color:#009000;">(talk)</span></small> 02:54, 19 December 2013 (UTC)

== Male with hidden ability breeding with Female with regular ability? ==
I saw this line in the article and thought it was ambiguous: Hidden Abilities cannot be passed down from male or genderless Pokémon, or when breeding with Ditto until Generation VI. But when I wanted to reword it, it occurred to me: Would it actually be possible for, say, a male Torchic with Speed Boost to breed with a female Torchic with Blaze and for them to produce an egg that has Speed Boost? Can someone confirm whether such a thing is possible or not?
If it is possible, then simply rewording that line to Until Generation VI, [...] would be fine. But if it's not, then I think the line should be changed more significantly, to (perhaps) Before Generation VI, Hidden Abilities could not be passed down when breeding with Ditto. Male Pokémon cannot pass down their Hidden Abilities unless bred with Ditto. Tiddlywinks (talk) 23:46, 10 November 2013 (UTC)
:In GenV, any Pokemon that wasn't female could never pass down a hidden Ability. A female Torchic with Blaze and a male Torchic with Speed Boost would always produce Torchics with Blaze. If it's reworded, seeing as there was only one generation with hidden Abilities before XY, perhaps 'In Generation V, [...]' might be better? Bluesun (talk) 07:19, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
::I'm quite clear on how Gen V worked, actually. I actually meant, in Gen VI, could, say, a Male Torchic with Speed Boost breeding with a female Torchic with Blaze produce an egg that has Speed Boost? That is what is unclear to me. == Ability Priority in Horde Battles. ==
I've been noticing in Horde battles that sometimes for example when the battling Pokémon has Intimidate and the Horde as for example Frisk, sometimes Intimidate takes effect first, then the frisk, but sometimes a frisk or two takes effect first followed by intimidate and other Frisks. Is there some kind of priority here? Yamitora1 (talk) 18:41, 30 January 2014 (UTC)
:Nothing out of the ordinary. Priority of those abilities in any battle is determined by a user's Speed. Horde battles don't change that. Luna Tiger * the Arc Toraph 19:26, 30 January 2014 (UTC)

I think that the list of abilities section is messed up because it is ordered alphabetically instead of ordered by #. The list of abilities should be ordered by # and not alphabetically.

== List of Abilities by Anime debut ==
For the sake of clarity, and simplifying things, can someone convert the existing section "In the anime" into a list in the style of List of moves by anime debut, or possibly create a separate page in that style? (Until next time... Anon e Mouse Jr.) Anon e Mouse Jr. (talk) 00:05, 6 September 2015 (UTC)
Since nobody's done it yet, here's the introduction and main table for a "List of Abilities by anime debut" page (just remove the italics from the top paragraph, and the header for the actual section):
This is a list of Abilities and the anime episode they debuted in. Please note that Bulbapedia considers the movies, Pikachu shorts and side stories to be separate from the main anime, regardless of their canonicity, and therefore abilities like Dark Aura and Fairy Aura, which have not yet appeared in an episode, do not have an episode listed.

Evolving Dual traits
Some pokemon that cant be caught in the wild and must be evolved have a dual nature that is not shared with the previous generation, how do you get their abilities then?
- Breeding LOL hfc2X 20:20, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
- If the ability is a new one (introduced in gen IV) the pokemon has a 50% chance to change the ability upon evolving, I think Shiny Lanturn 10:06, 17 June 2008 (UTC)
- What I meant is that if you transfer Nidorino with point point and evolve it, it has a 50% chance of getting rivalry. The Rhyperior situation doesn't fly because the line already had two abilities : Lightning Rod and Rock head, Rock head becomes solid rock upon evolving. Solid rock isn't 'added' it replaces an existing one. Shiny Lanturn 14:26, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
- Nopes, Nidorino already has Rivalry and even Nidoran♂ has it. If you want a Nidoking with Rivalry you'll have to breed it and get a Nidoran♂ with it already. hfc2X 16:28, 18 July 2008 (UTC)
- Rivalry didn't exist in generation 3. As such, a Nidorino that was migrated does have a 50% chance of their ability changing upon evolving. I know this is old, but it was driving me mad --Shadowater 02:44, 5 February 2011 (UTC)
- Also, the apparent 50% chance of picking one ability or the other upon evolution appears to be determined at trade or import. I have a zigzagoon with pickup which I imported to Diamond from Sapphire, then traded to my current Soul Silver. I have a savegame with it at lvl 19 on the verge of evolution, in order to reset the game if it evolves with gluttony (I want pickup). EVERY TIME I level it up it evolves with gluttony, it's been 9 times now. It's definitely not 50/50 upon evolution. -DropShock 17:59, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
- It's 50/50 if you haven't found out yet, but it'll always turn out the same. The ability is set as nr1 or nr2 from the moment you obtain it. If in genVI the nr2 ability is suddenly different than genIII (where it was the same as nr1 in such cases), the ability will correct after evolution if that's the case or stay if your poke has nr1.--Saiph charon 18:10, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Alphabet
Shouldn't these be in alphabetical order? -Ketsuban
Logic doesn't prevail, ket. They're stored this way in every other database, and we're following along. Heh. We'll work up a feature to make finding each trait easier, though, probably. ~evkl
Apparently logic does prevail! Aha, I win! -Ketsuban
All of the ability articles listed on this article are classified as stubs. But is there really anything more to say on all of them? Am I forgetting some major way in which these articles could be expanded? Or can we go through and pull out all those stub tags? --Pie 12:03, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
- Some real description of the ability would be good. The current text is just pulled from the game - doesn't have much detail, for example, Pickup could do with an explanation of just what very rare, rare, uncommon, common etc. mean in terms of percentages. Blaze ought to explain what up and pinch specifically mean. And so on. - 振霖T 13:55, 17 May 2006 (UTC)
Help needed
Hey, do someone knows someone that can get the game code so we can add the numbers to G IV abilities? Gambler 04:47, 11 November 2006 (UTC) P.S. Also, I'm thinking of doing a template, should I add them in numerical order or by funtionality? (Raises something, decreases something, affected by weather, affects weather, etc...)?
- I think we should keep the functionality things to categories, which I've only done for the weather ones. Numerically listed or alphabetically listed in a template is good, though. And you might be able to extract them by crossreferencing one of Zhen Lin's subpages on which Pokémon has which ability with a source that shows the names for the specific abilities a Pokémon has, since I dunno any other source that gives number and name at the same time. Tom Temprotran 09:06, 11 November 2006 (UTC)
Mystery Dungeon Information
Should there be a Mystery Dungeon section on abilities articles? A lot of abilities work different than they do on main games (Illuminate makes a wild pokemon appears every time the pokemon with Illuminate is hit, for example) and I think articles should note that.
- Firstly, fixed the title typo in this section. Secondly, I think this is a big consistency issue. Some pages have a Mystery Dungeon section, while others simply have a paragraph "In Pokemon Mystery Dungeon, ..." --Cedrickc (talk) 17:44, 17 May 2013 (UTC)
Anime information
Should we mention on the ability articles when they were used in the anime just like we have for moves? Maybe even provide pictures? That would expand them a little. --☆ケンジガール 03:13, 31 July 2008 (UTC)
Layout

Abilites Outside of battle

I know this is an old conversation but I feel like this solution is inadequate. I couldn't find any information on these extra effects except in the individual pages and right here in the discussion page. I can't even find a mention in the article that they can have effects outside of battle. If nobody tells me otherwise I'll try fixing it myself eventually but I'm not comfortable making a change this size without some agreement. Notoptimus (talk) 07:34, 18 December 2013 (UTC)
- I think the best way to do this would be to mention in the mechanics section that some abilities have an effect out of battle, with a link to the category. (The code required to link to the category rather than categorising the page can be seen in trom's comments above). Werdnae (talk) 02:54, 19 December 2013 (UTC)
Single and Dual
Just what do those two columns mean? Thanos6 11:55, 11 August 2009 (UTC)

- Thanks. Do you think we should put that in the article somewhere? Thanos6 12:02, 11 August 2009 (UTC)
List of pokémons with their abilities
Shouldn't there be a list of pokémons with their abilities just like it's the case with base stats, types, catch rate, etc? ... I sort of need it for the game I'm making... *rolleyes* By the way, you will be the first to recieve the source code for that game since I use all of your data :) --Stoo 04:06, 19 September 2009 (UTC)

New confirmed abilites
EarthquakeSpiral, Encourage, Pigeon Breast/Heart,.. all new to Generation V, shouldn't these be added. Their is also TeraVoltage and TurboBlaze, but their effects haven't been revealed, so I didn't know if they would be ok to add?--S2daam 15:14, 3 July 2010 (UTC)
Hidden Abilities?
There's a good deal of information on Hidden Abilities here, such as which Pokemon have which Hidden Abilities, but I haven't been able to find any information on what a Hidden Ability is or does anywhere, either on the wiki or via Google. I have a couple of hypotheses, but I don't have either of the Generation V games, and I'm not certain they exist in Gen IV. I also don't care to throw around wild conjecture because that's how rumors get started. If this information can be found, I think we should add it. VoidPointer 01:36, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
- They are exclusive to Gen V games. They are abilities that a Pokémon can legitimately have in-game, but are not available on normal wild Pokémon. They are only available through special means, one example of which being the Dream World. Werdnae (talk) 02:42, 12 December 2010 (UTC)
Anime Templates
Could we use a template for Anime appearances for Abilities, like we have for the moves? Here is Lightningrod as an example:

Numbers are off
The numbers for the amount of Pokémon with single and dual abilities still add up to 493, meaning they haven't been changed for Generation V FrankTheTank000 20:52, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
- By the count we currently have in the article, 292 Pokémon have a single ability, therefore 357 Pokémon have a double ability. (We should really automate that with categories and the PokémonInfobox *cough* Werdnae *cough* .) This subtraction almost matches the data in the dual ability column; the total sum of the column is 715 but it should be 714. Does anyone have any idea why this number is inaccurate? I.e. is there some gimmick I've forgotten which lets a Pokémon have three non-DW abilities (excluding Basculin; I checked that already) or has the user who entered the data made a typo somewhere? —darklordtrom 21:25, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
- Given there's a parameter for the number of abilities, it would be simple to add. However I don't know what to do for Shaymin and Giratina (abilityn=alt). They're currently listed as only having one ability with their respective forme MS on the ability pages... Hidden abilities would also be easy to categorise assuming they aren't already. Werdnae (talk) 22:48, 19 June 2011 (UTC)
- And this page counts Giratina as dual abilites and Shaymin as having dual abilities for Natural Cure. Either wasn't included at all or was counted as single and the numbers hadn't been updated for Serene Grace. I've added it to the dual abilities column to match the rest for now, but that means we're one Pokemon over somewhere. Werdnae (talk) 00:11, 20 June 2011 (UTC)

Rumble
Pokemon Rumble has its own set of abilities. Should they be added here, or do they belong on their own page? (I don't know how they differ between the two games) XVuvuzela2010X 04:39, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
- Here is a list of (most of) them. XVuvuzela2010X 05:03, 31 August 2011 (UTC)
- I don't think they're called Abilities in Rumble. Our list of them refers to them as Special Traits. ★Jo the Marten★ ಠ_ಠ♥ 05:07, 31 August 2011 (UTC)

Pokémon Conquest
Conquest introduced some unique Pokemon abilities that only make sense within the game: Mood Maker and Mountaineer, for example. Also, there are warrior abilities like Detox and Bustle. What should be done about these new abilities? --Inspyre (talk) 18:38, 23 July 2012 (UTC)
Wild Hidden Abilities
"These Abilities are not found on Pokémon found randomly in the wild" This no longer applies, apparently! I was just wandering around the Desert Resort in Pokémon White 2 and encountered a wild Darmanitan. It was overlevelled (35) and when it appeared, it was complimented by a flash of purple diamonds. The game text said "A wild Darmanitan appeared!?". It had Zen Mode, its hidden ability. When I caught it, before it was sent to the PC, the game said something like "It seems the wild Darmanitan was different from regular Pokémon!" So yeah, it seems in BW2 there's a slight chance of a wild encounter with Pokémon with Hidden Abilities. Me, Hurray! (talk) 14:06, 14 October 2012 (UTC)

Ability chart?
Trying to update this a bit so it is more accurate. Is Dual and Single referring to Pokémon that can have this as one of two abilities and their only ability respectively? Frozen Fennec 03:31, 18 June 2013 (UTC)
- Yes; take the Ability Chlorophyll, for example. Ten Pokémon have this ability as the only possible ability they can have excluding Hidden Abilities (example: Oddish), while nineteen Pokémon have this ability as one of two possible abilities (example: Tangela), and six Pokémon have this ability as their Hidden Ability (example: Bulbasaur). Pictures
Why don't we add pictures of the abilities to each page, just like we do with moves?
Guilherme.didi (talk) 07:16, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
- Does any Ability have animation? Besides the weather-abilities which technically use the weather animation, I can't really think of any Ability, so what's the point? Marked +-+-+ (talk) 07:24, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
- Well, they don't have unique animations, but somf of them can be shown how they work. Like Intimidate, Justified, Water Absorb, Bad Dreams and others. Guilherme.didi (talk) 13:35, 4 July 2013 (UTC)
- Pictures are shown on the move pages to show animations. The Ability pages already have information about how they work, including the text displayed. So I really don't see the need for adding pictures since there aren't any animations specific to abilities. Takkupanda (talk) 15:45, 22 July 2013 (UTC)
Mega Abilities

- The admins are already on it. There's a lot of templates that need to be updated to take into account new features in Gen 6, so it'll take some time. Pumpkinking0192 (talk) 21:29, 6 September 2013 (UTC)
Passing From Males
I was breeding my male Torchic (with Speed Boost) with a Ditto in X and some of the offspring had Speed Boost, too! This is a new feature that they must have added in Generation VI, a huge change from Generation V. But I feel like this is such a big change that I should put it on the talk page first instead of just going ahead and adding it myself without permission. --Zewis (29) 22:05, 24 October 2013 (UTC)
Ability Capsule?
It states, several times, in this article that "abilities cannot be changed" by means other than evolution, but now you can swap between a Pokémon's two possible abilities (if it has two possible abilities) with the Ability Capsule. --Giokutalkuser 00:31, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
- Only if it has one of its regular (non-hidden) abilities and its species has two non-hidden abilities. This definitely should be in the article, though. --Zewis (29) 18:57, 29 October 2013 (UTC)
- In GenV, any Pokemon that wasn't female could never pass down a hidden Ability.
- I'm quite clear on how Gen V worked, actually. I actually meant, in Gen VI, could, say, a Male Torchic with Speed Boost breeding with a female Torchic with Blaze produce an egg that has Speed Boost? That is what is unclear to me. (FYI: I do not have X/Y.) Tiddlywinks (talk) 14:40, 11 November 2013 (UTC)
Ability Priority in Horde Battles.
- Nothing out of the ordinary.

EmolgaTheAwesome (talk) 21:48, 5 May 2015 (UTC)

List of Abilities by Anime debut
For the sake of clarity, and simplifying things, can someone convert the existing section "In the anime" into a list in the style of List of moves by anime debut, or possibly create a separate page in that style? Since nobody's done it yet, here's the introduction and main table for a "List of Abilities by anime debut" page (just remove the italics from the top paragraph, and the header for the actual section):
This is a list of Abilities and the anime episode they debuted in. Please note that Bulbapedia considers the movies, Pikachu shorts and side stories to be separate from the main anime, regardless of their canonicity, and therefore abilities like Dark Aura and Fairy Aura, which have not yet appeared in an episode, do not have an episode listed.
