Agatha (Japanese: キクコ Kikuko) is a [[ | Agatha (Japanese: キクコ Kikuko) is a Ghost Trainer who serves as a member of the Indigo Elite Four in Generations I, III, and VII. | ||
==In the core series games== | |||
Agatha is an elderly woman who is the third Trainer of the Kanto Elite Four in Generations I, III, and VII, and the oldest such known to date. As such, she serves as an inspiration for senior Pokémon Trainers all around the region. She uses Ghost-type Pokémon and other Pokémon with horrifying appearances. She has a very short temper and believes Pokémon should primarily be used for battling. | |||
Agatha and Professor Oak were once friendly rivals in their youth. However, their relationship has grown bitter and strained over the years because Agatha believes he was too weak to continue competing. In Pokémon Masters EX, during her Sync Pair Story "A Day with Agatha", Agatha explains how she and Professor Oak met. Oak was always friendly and open when he was young and would talk to Agatha and try to help her. Though he was only trying to be nice, it still annoyed Agatha because she wanted to be left alone. Agatha would battle Oak to try and get him to go away, but he was always better than her, and so she would battle him again and again. Eventually, the time they spent together began to mean a lot to Agatha. As a result, when Oak got the idea to invent the Pokédex and subsequently stopped battling, Agatha felt betrayed. | |||
[[ | |||
By the events of the Generation II and IV games, Agatha is no longer a member of the Elite Four, and Bruno has assumed her position. Her absence is never explained, but an old portrait with younger versions of her, Professor Oak, and Kurt can be seen in the latter's house. | |||

==== History ==== | |||
===== Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire ===== | |||
Agatha appeared in The Scheme Team. Ash met her while traveling through Viridian City during his journey home to Pallet Town. Scott formally introduced her to Ash, and Agatha explained that she was acting as the temporary Gym Leader for the Viridian Gym until the true new Gym Leader would arrive. She uses Ghost Pokémon for the Gym. | |||
Ash then challenged Agatha to a battle, hoping to demonstrate his strength to Scott. Despite being in the Top 8 of the recent Ever Grande Conference and putting up a good fight against Agatha, Ash lost to her Agatha. Despite that, both Agatha and Scott were impressed by Ash's technique, and Agatha revealed to Ash that she is a member of the Elite Four. She and Scott both recommended Ash to challenge the Battle Frontier and the Frontier Brains. | |||
TRT soon arrived, hoping to kidnap Pikachu, but Ash worked together with Agatha and her Golbat to send the trio blasting off. She then wished Ash the best for his upcoming Battle Frontier challenge and said that she would be rooting for him. | |||
=== | ====Character==== | ||
{{ | Agatha is confident in battle and always looks forward to challenging a strong Trainer. In her match against Ash, she bade her time to observe Pikachu's movements before having her Agatha attack. Over time, she has developed an array of strategies to counter an opponent, such as when she used her Golbat's Supersonic to reflect James's Pin Missile rather than confusion it. | ||

==In the manga== | |||
===Pokémon Adventures=== | |||
| |||
====History==== | |||
=====Past===== | |||
When Agatha and Professor Oak were younger, Agatha met up with Oak during the Pokémon League and asked why he quit their "research group". He explained that he disagreed with their methods and wanted to create the Pokédex, which she thought was a stupid idea that would never be complete, and a battle ensued which Oak won. Agatha would soon face Oak again in the finals of the Pokémon League, which Oak barely won after a battle that lasted over eight hours. Agatha would end up developing a personal vendetta against him and anyone who associates with him. | |||
| | |||
=====Red, Green & Blue===== | |||
Agatha debuted in a cameo when Professor Oak talked about his first championship win, which was against her in the finals. Agatha, along with the rest of the original Kanto Elite Four, physically debuted in A Charizard...and a Champion, where they were seen observing Red and Blue's battle at Indigo Plateau. | |||
| | |||
=====Yellow===== | |||
Agatha was one of the main villains in this chapter; she was one of the Elite Four who tried to destroy most of humanity from their base on Cerise Island. | |||
She was first seen trying to take away Super Nerd Miles after he was defeated by Yellow and the Good Gym Leaders of Kanto. She was then seen in a flashback during the events of the previous chapter where she battled Blue and attempted to kill him by having her Gengar use Dream Eater to suck away his energy. While encased in the Dream Eater's coffin, she told him of her vendetta against Professor Oak and anyone associated with him, which included Blue. | |||
He managed to escape with help from his Golduck, and a Haunter she stole from Camper Evan was also taken back. She then had her Gengar lead an army of Haunter to attack Cerulean City to delay Misty. | |||
| | She fought Blue and Koga, revealing an Arbok with the ability to change the pattern on its belly and use different corresponding abilities. She decided to divide Koga and Blue using her Arbok's Rock Slide and she had her Golbat attack Blue. While Blue was distracted fighting Golbat, she had her Gengar use Lick on Blue's eyes, causing temporary blindness. After battling Koga's Arbok for a while Koga started throwing shuriken balls out of nowhere, which Agatha believed was a pitiful attempt to harm her but was really Koga's attempt to get a Paralyze Heal to Blue. After that Blue rejoined the battle and Koga used his Golbat's Leech Life to collect his own blood and smeared it on Arbok's pattern, preventing it from changing anymore. While Agatha was presumably beaten, her Arbok was reading itself to attack an unknowing Koga from behind, only to be stopped by Blue before it could land a Poison Sting attack. Agatha was subsequently defeated and seemingly vanished after her defeat, but not before she had her Gengar masquerade as Koga and Blue's shadow to slowly drain their energy, which was defeated as well. She then revealed that she was the one controlling the Pokémon armies of her peers by using special wrist bands to control them. | ||
| | |||
| | |||
| | |||
}} | |||
Agatha used the mind-controlling powers of her Ghost Pokémon to control Bruno against his will. It is shown that she was the one who also recruited Lorelei by healing her Seel and then figuring out they have a common distaste of humans. | |||

She does everything to get Clefairy to obey her. While on the ship, she caused the captain to collapse and made Clefairy the new captain. After she sucked Clefairy's blood, Red found out who she was as she transformed into a Golbat. Agatha (Japanese: キクコ Kikuko) is a Ghost-type Trainer who serves as a member of the Indigo Elite Four in Generations I, III, and VII.
In the core series games
Agatha is an elderly woman who is the third Trainer of the Kanto Elite Four in Generations I, III, and VII, and the oldest such known to date. As such, she serves as an inspiration for senior Pokémon Trainers all around the region. She uses Ghost-type Pokémon and other Pokémon with horrifying appearances. She has a very short temper and believes Pokémon should primarily be used for battling.
Agatha and Professor Oak were once friendly rivals in their youth. However, their relationship has grown bitter and strained over the years because Agatha believes he was too weak to continue competing. In Pokémon Masters EX, during her Sync Pair Story "A Day with Agatha", Agatha explains how she and Oak met.
By the events of the Generation II and IV games, Agatha is no longer a member of the Elite Four, and Bruno has assumed her position. Her absence is never explained, but an old portrait with younger versions of her, Professor Oak, and Kurt can be seen in the latter's house.

History
Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire
Agatha appeared in The Scheme Team. Ash met her while traveling through Viridian City during his journey home to Pallet Town. Scott formally introduced her to Ash, and Agatha explained that she was acting as the temporary Gym Leader for the Viridian Gym until the true new Gym Leader would arrive. She uses Ghost Pokémon for the Gym.
Ash then challenged Agatha to a battle, hoping to demonstrate his strength to Scott. Despite being in the Top 8 of the recent Ever Grande Conference and putting up a good fight against Agatha, Ash lost to her Gengar. Despite that, both Agatha and Scott were impressed by Ash's technique, and Agatha revealed to Ash that she is a member of the Elite Four. She and Scott both recommended Ash to challenge the Battle Frontier and the Frontier Brains.
Team Rocket soon arrived, hoping to kidnap Pikachu, but Ash worked together with Agatha and her Golbat to send the trio blasting off. She then wished Ash the best for his upcoming Battle Frontier challenge and said that she would be rooting for him.
Character
Agatha is confident in battle and always looks forward to challenging a strong Trainer. In her match against Ash, she bade her time to observe Pikachu's movements before having her Gengar attack. Over time, she has developed an array of strategies to counter an opponent, such as when she used her Golbat's Supersonic to reflect Cacnea's Pin Missile rather than confusing it.

I Choose You!
Agatha briefly appeared in I Choose You!, which is set in a timeline separate from the main series. She appeared in Ash's nightmare, in which he lived in a world where Pokémon never existed and attended school like a normal child. In this nightmare, she was seen teaching Ash's class.
Pokémon Origins
Agatha appeared briefly in File 4: Charizard. She was seen being challenged and defeated by Red, allowing Red move on to challenge Lance.
Pokémon
Pokémon Generations
Agatha appeared in The Challenger, where she was first seen talking about Blue, the first Trainer in a long time to collect eight Gym Badges, with the rest of the Kanto Elite Four. Later, she was the third Elite Four member challenged by Blue. After her Arbok was defeated, Agatha admitted to Blue that she had expected him, as the grandson of Professor Oak, to focus on completing the Pokédex, but Blue responded that, for him, filling the Pokédex was just a tool to become stronger. Blue managed to defeat Agatha and her Gengar off-screen, allowing him to move on to Lance's room.

History
Past
When Agatha and Professor Oak were younger, Agatha met up with Oak during the Pokémon League and asked why he quit their "research group". He explained that he disagreed with their methods and wanted to create the Pokédex, which she thought was a stupid idea that would never be complete, and a battle ensued which Oak won. Agatha would soon face Oak again in the finals of the Pokémon League, which Oak barely won after a battle that lasted over eight hours. Agatha would end up developing a personal vendetta against him and anyone who associates with him.
Red, Green & Blue arc
Agatha debuted in a cameo when Professor Oak talked about his first championship win, which was against her in the finals. Agatha, along with the rest of the original Kanto Elite Four, physically debuted in A Charizard...and a Champion, where they were seen observing Red and Blue's battle at Indigo Plateau.
Yellow arc
Agatha used the mind-controlling powers of her Ghost-type Pokémon to control Bruno against his will. It is shown that she was the one who also recruited Lorelei by healing her Seel and then figuring out they have a common distaste of humans.
Pokémon
This listing is of Agatha's Pokémon in the Pokémon Adventures manga.
Debut | As Gastly as Before |
---|
Gastly is part of Agatha's Ghost army. They were used to attack the Kanto cities. Agatha also has her own Gastly outside of the army. The Gastly first appears as a dark fog lifting Super Nerd Miles when he'd been beaten. Blue's Charizard was able to defeat Gastly by attacking out of nowhere, after which the boy deduces that the same Elite Four member whom he'd fought before was behind the scenes. In said battle, Blue's Scyther was used to Slash Gastly into pieces.
None of Gastly's moves are known.
Debut | Lapras Lazily |

Agatha stole many Haunter, both wild and Trainer-owned, and used them to attack the cities of Kanto.
None of Haunter's moves are known.

Gengar is part of Agatha's Ghost army.
Debut | Growing Out of Gengar |
---|
Arbok was sent out to battle Koga and Blue as it was their goal to try to defeat Agatha. Agatha's Arbok has several abilities activated by Agatha changing the patterns on its abdomen, including the speed-boosting pattern, the attack boosting pattern, and the invulnerability pattern that repels poisons. However, its ability was nullified when its body was smeared with blood.
Arbok's known moves are Wrap, Leer, Rock Slide, Body Slam, Bite, Bind*, Poison Sting, and Haze*.
Debut | Growing Out of Gengar |
---|
Golbat was another Pokémon sent out to battle against Koga and Blue.
Golbat's only known move is Supersonic.
Pokémon Pocket Monsters
Agatha appears in Panic on the Luxury Liner?!. She has the ability to transform into a Golbat.
She is first seen as a Golbat, spying on Red as he boarded the Luxury Liner. After they boarded, Agatha transformed into a human. She took an interest in Clefairy. She does everything to get Clefairy to obey her. While on the ship, she caused the captain to collapse and made Clefairy the new captain. However, all of this turned out to be fake as Agatha was only interested in Clefairy because his blood seemed tasty. After she sucked Clefairy's blood, Red found out who she was as she transformed into a Golbat. However, the blood Agatha drained from Clefairy turned out to taste bad, and miniature versions of Clefairy escaped Agatha's Golbat body. She was last seen in the water after the Luxury Liner got destroyed.
Pokémon
Agatha has the ability to transform into a Golbat and back into a human at will. She first appeared in this form when she was spying on Red and his Pokémon. She was last seen in this form on a sunken cruise ship.
None of Golbat's moves are known.

Trivia
- As noted by Shauntal of the Unova Elite Four in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 in the form of a quote from her novel during the player's post-National Pokédex challenge, Agatha and Bertha are very similar in appearance and name (both in English and Japanese).
- Furthermore, they both are part of their regions's Elite Four, and their Japanese names both contain 菊 kiku (chrysanthemum).
- This is further corroborated by Charm of the Miss Fortune sisters, who herself bears a resemblance to both of them and whose team is composed of Rhydon (from the same evolutionary line as Bertha's ace in Pokémon Platinum) and Gengar (Agatha's main Pokémon in essentially every canon).
- Though Agatha is stated to specialize in the Ghost-type, Poison is actually the most common type among all of her Pokémon in the core series games, present in all but two of her Pokémon: Misdreavus and Alolan Marowak due to the lack of Ghost type Pokémon at the time.

- This distinction is shared with Lance in Generation II and Generation IV. However, Lance is considered the Champion in those generations rather than an Elite Four member and this distinction only applies to his team in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, his initial Champion team and his team during his Dragon's Den Multi Battle in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver where all his Pokémon are also Flying-types and has more Flying-types than Dragon-types, despite being a Dragon-type specialist.

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, the Gym Leader battle theme plays during the battles against all four members of the Elite Four.
