Greta (Japanese: コゴミ Kogomi) is the Frontier Brain and leader of the Battle Frontier's Battle Arena. She is the only character in the games to have the Trainer class Arena Tycoon (Japanese: アリーナキャプテン Arena Captain).

Pokémon the Series: Ruby and Sapphire

Greta appeared in Wheel of Frontier. As in Pokémon Emerald, she is the Frontier Brain of the Battle Arena, and runs a karate dojo where she trains alongside her dozens of apprentices. Unlike the games, however, she is a Fighting-type expert. Before a battle, a wheel is spun to decide how many Pokémon will be used in the match. While the matches are Single Battles, the other Pokémon that are intended to be used remain outside of their Poké Balls until they faint.

Ash spun a two-on-two match. His Grovyle was defeated by Greta's Hariyama in the first round. Ash's Snorlax, using its impressive endurance and equally powerful attacks, went on to defeat both of Greta's Pokémon despite the type disadvantage and earn Ash the Guts Symbol.

She reappeared in a flashback in A Pyramiding Rage!.

Character

Greta, like Ash, is a high-spirited individual and very passionate about Pokémon battles. Unlike her game counterpart, who has no specific type that she specializes in, she is an expert in Fighting Pokémon, like her role models Chuck and Brawly, and continues to train her focus in order to improve her strength.

Speed-based strategies work poorly against Greta's team, and they actually help magnify her Pokémon's attacks. Her Pokémon's own speed and relentless physical moves make Greta a tough opponent. However, her Pokémon are weak to attacks from above or behind and can get hurt if their own attacks miss.

Hariyama was the first Pokémon used by Greta in her battle with Ash, where it first battled with Grovyle. Despite Grovyle managing to outmatch Hariyama in speed and dealing some damage on it, Greta was finally able to use Grovyle's momentum as her own advantage, and land a strong hit on the Wood Gecko Pokémon, knocking it out.

Ash next used his Snorlax against the Arm Thrust Pokémon. Despite having disadvantage in type, Snorlax was able to keep itself safe from Hariyama's attacks by using Protect. Eventually, one of Hariyama's Focus Punches missed its opponent and it instead punched the battlefield, leaving it with a sore hand. It was then frozen solid and knocked out with an Ice Punch.

Hariyama's known moves are Arm Thrust and Focus Punch.

Medicham was the second Pokémon Greta used in her battle against Ash, going up against his Snorlax. With its great speed and offense, Medicham quickly overwhelmed Snorlax, even leaving it frozen with Ice Punch. Although Snorlax was able to heal itself with Rest while frozen, it was subjected to another barrage of powerful attacks, especially when its Hyper Beam missing forced it to recharge. Once Snorlax had finished recharging, however, Ash had it use Hyper Beam on the ground, sending Snorlax flying and allowing it to defeat Medicham with an airborne Body Slam, earning Ash the Guts Symbol.

Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire arc

Greta and the other Hoenn Frontier Brains battle and defeat the Admins of Neo Team Magma and Neo Team Aqua, who had interfered in the launch of a rocket that was made to stop the meteoroid threatening to destroy the world. Greta attempts to interrogate the Admins on the location of their accomplice, Zinnia, only for the Admins to deny knowing where she had gone.

Pokémon

Umbreon
Greta's Umbreon

Umbreon is Greta's first known Pokémon. It was first seen at the Battle Frontier's opening ceremony alongside its Trainer. At Artisan Cave, it was used to battle Guile's army of stolen rental Pokémon. At the Battle Arena, Greta used Umbreon as her second Pokémon. It managed to defeat Emerald's Dusclops, but was defeated by his Sudowoodo.

Umbreon's known moves are Quick Attack, Double Team, Feint Attack, and Confuse Ray, and its Ability is Synchronize.

Shedinja
Greta's Shedinja

Shedinja is Greta's second known Pokémon. It was first used at the Battle Arena to battle Emerald. There, it was the third Pokémon Greta used and battled Emerald's Sudowoodo. Despite its single hit point, Shedinja managed to defend against Sudowoodo's super-effective hits and fight back. Despite this, Sudowoodo survived Shedinja's attacks, allowing it to win via assessment.

Shedinja's known moves are Endure and Solar Beam, and its Ability is Wonder Guard.

Heracross
Greta's Heracross

Heracross is Greta's third known Pokémon. It was first used at the Battle Arena to battle Emerald. There, it was the first Pokémon Greta used and battle Emerald's Sceptile. Although Sceptile survived Heracross's Megahorn, it was defeated via assessment afterward.

Heracross's only known move is Megahorn.

Trivia

  • Greta and Spenser are the only Frontier Brains whose game teams do not share a known Pokémon with their anime counterparts.
