A Backpacker (Japanese: バックパッカー Backpacker) is a type of Trainer class introduced in Generation V. They are young men and women who carry large backpacks and most often use only one Pokémon.

In Generation V, Backpackers at Big Stadium and Small Court give out Max Repels when defeated. A large number of Backpackers can be found in Nacrene City.

In Generation VI, only male Backpackers are present. They appear to be a younger version of a Hiker. Outside the Battle Maison, most of them only use Normal-type Pokémon.

In Generation VII, there are only female Backpackers, whose design is similar to the one in Generation V. At the Battle Royal Dome, Backpackers specialize in Rock- and Ground-type Pokémon. At the Battle Tree, Backpackers exclusively use Legendary Pokémon during later battles.

In Generation VIII, only female Backpackers appear. Their design is different from that of previous female Backpackers, as they have black hair and wear headbands and worn-out jeans. In the Battle Tower, Backpackers specialize in Flying- and Ground-type Pokémon.

In Generation IX, only male Backpackers appear. They have longer, straighter hair than previous male Backpackers and wear tank tops.

Black & White arc

A female Backpacker was seen listening to Ghetsis's speech in An Odd Speech.

A male Backpacker with a Klink was seen amongst the people waiting to cross the Driftveil Drawbridge in Drawing Bridges.

A male Backpacker was seen amongst the Trainers entering Victory Road in Dream a Little Dream.

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc

A female Backpacker was shown at Konikoni City In Flash and Cosmog's Secret.

Sword & Shield arc

In Chomp!! It's Dracovish, a female Backpacker who was a Macro Cosmos's in disguise was sent with her cohorts to Route 9 Tunnel to dispose of a wild Dracovish that suddenly Dynamaxed. The Dracovish was saved by Marvin, who used his Sniffler to stun everyone long enough for him to catch Dracovish and escape. Afterward, they reported their failure to Oleana and were ordered to stand by in Wyndon.

Klink was seen with its Trainer, waiting for the Driftveil Drawbridge to lower.

A Backpacker in Pocket Monsters BW Good Partners

A Backpacker appeared in BWGP01. He was one of the Trainers on Route 1 who couldn't get through because of a Scraggy in their way.

Patrat is the Backpacker's only known Pokémon. It was sent out to battle Scraggy, but was soundly defeated by Scraggy's Sucker Punch.
