Luxray (Japanese: レントラー Rentorar) is an Electric Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

Biology
It evolves from Luxio starting at level 30. It is the final form of Shinx.

Physiology
Biology
Its appearance is based on that of a fully-grown lion. It has three rings on the backs of its legs, similar to Luxio (which has two) and Shinx (which has one).

Luxray is a quadrupedal Pokémon resembling a fully-grown lion. While its face, hind legs, torso, and the back of its front legs are blue, much of its body is covered with shaggy, black fur. The fur is longer around the shoulders and the base of the tail, and forms a mane on its head. The mane is larger on the male than on the female. It has yellow eyes with red sclerae, a blunt muzzle, and rounded ears with yellow insides. The eyes change to the color when when using its ability. There are three yellow half-rings on the back of each foreleg. Its long, thin tail is tipped with a yellow four-pointed star.

Gender differences
Luxray has powerful eyesight that is capable of seeing through most objects, like X-ray vision. It uses this ability for hunting and keeping track of its offspring. However, this ability requires a lot of electricity to use. As a result, Luxray needs to sleep for long periods of time in order to store up more energy. Luxray live in packs, each having one male to lead them.
The female has a shorter mane than the male.
Special abilities
Luxray has special eyes designed for x-ray vision.

Behavior
Evolution
Habitat
Luxray evolves from Luxio and is the final form of Shinx.

Luxray and its evolutionary relatives seem to be based on the Lynx (constellation), as well as the lynx (mythology), which medieval bestiaries sometimes depicted as a lion-like creature and was said to possess supernatural eyesight. It may also be based on the neighboring constellation, Leo (constellation).

Luxray (Japanese: レントラー Rentorar) is an Electric-type Pokémon introduced in Generation IV.

It evolves from Luxio starting at level 30. It is the final form of Shinx.

Biology

Luxray's X-ray vision from its point of view

Evolution

Luxray evolves from Luxio and is the final form of Shinx.

Luxray in the anime

Main series

Major appearances

Clemont's Luxray

In The Future Is Now, Thanks to Determination!, Clemont's Luxio evolved into a Luxray while in the process of saving his Trainer.

Other

Luxray made its main series debut in Luxray Vision!, under the ownership of Marble. Having recently evolved from Luxio, it was unable to use Electric-type moves and had a serious attitude problem for most of the episode.

In the original timeline of Arceus and the Jewel of Life, a hypnotized Damos commanded three Luxray to attack Arceus with Shock Wave. When Ash and his friends traveled to the past to prevent this, Marcus, the one responsible for hypnotizing Damos, managed to use the Luxray again to attack Arceus.

In The Fleeing Tower of Sunyshore!, Volkner used a Luxray in a Gym battle against Ash. He went up against Ash's Grotle before the match was called off when the lights went out. In The Eighth Wonder of the Sinnoh World!, he was used during Ash's rematch against Volkner. He battled and defeated Pikachu before losing to Infernape's Blaze-fueled Flame Wheel. In Ultra Exciting from the Shocking Start!, Volkner used Luxray during his battle against Ash in the World Coronation Series.

In I Choose You!, Sorrel was revealed to have befriended a Luxray during his childhood. He died trying to protect Sorrel after he got lost in a blizzard.

Minor appearances

Luxray debuted in Alice's flashback in The Rise of Darkrai. In the flashback, Alicia saw Luxray fire a Hyper Beam upon Darkrai, but Darkrai retaliated with a Dark Void, trapping Luxray in a nightmare. However, Alice played Oración, allowing it and the other affected Pokémon to sleep peacefully.

In One Team, Two Team, Red Team, Blue Team!, the Pokémon Summer Academy lent a Luxray to one of the students for the first leg of the Pokémon Triathlon.

A Luxray appeared in a flashback in Playing The Leveling Field!.

In Beating the Bustle and Hustle!, a Trainer's Luxray competed in the fake Sinnoh Pokémon Hustle that Team Rocket had set up.

A Luxray appeared in An Old Family Blend!, under the ownership of Jeffrey.

A Luxray appeared in the ending credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions, under the ownership of a Pokémon Baccer World Cup participant.

A Luxray appeared in a fantasy in Clemont's Got a Secret!.

In Alola, Alola!, a Luxray was treated by Nurse Joy at the Pokémon Center.

A Luxray appeared in Fuecoco…Becomes a Crook?!, under the ownership of a group of archeologists.

In Passing by Probopass and Maneuvering around Magnezone, when the trio is traveling through Mt. Coronet, a Luxray that evolved from a Luxio they had helped earlier in their journey saved Pearl and Platinum after they were trapped by a rock slide. This same Luxray later appeared to Pearl in Showdown with Houndoom as he was traveling to Lake Valor, and, after defeating the Houndoom that was trying to burn them alive, joined him as his third Pokémon, now named Rayler.

In the original magazine release of the manga, Mars of Team Galactic had a Luxray. However, it was replaced with an Electivire in the graphic novel release.

Trivia

 •  Luxray is the only Pokémon with a base stat total of 523.

Origin

Luxray and its evolutionary relatives seem to be based on the constellation Lynx, as well as the lynx in mythology, which medieval bestiaries sometimes depicted as a lion-like creature and was said to possess supernatural eyesight. It may also be based on the neighboring constellation, Leo.

Name origin

Luxray may be a combination of lux (Latin for light) and X-ray, referencing the mythological lynx's ability to see through solid objects.

Rentorar may be derived from レントゲン Röntgen (alternate name for the X-ray, named after its discoverer Wilhelm Röntgen) and 虎 tora (tiger), perhaps referencing the name Johannes Hevelius used for Lynx in his atlas, Tigris.
