In the anime
Main series
Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl
Bertha was first mentioned by Lucian in An Elite Meet and Greet!, along with the other members of the Sinnoh Elite Four and the League Champion Cynthia. She was mentioned again in A Trainer and Child Reunion! by an Officer Jenny.
She physically appeared in An Elite Coverup!, where she, along with Ash and his friends, helped Roland get his Magby back from Team Rocket. After chasing them with her SUV, the group battled Team Rock and Roland was reunited with Magby. Later, Bertha had a battle with Ash, using her Hippowdon against his Torterra, and she managed to defeat him.
Pokémon movies
She made a cameo appearance during the ending credits of Zoroark: Master of Illusions.
Character
Bertha has a strong advocacy for observant attitudes in everyday life and spent the entirety of the episode she appeared in to advise the group on their observation skills. For example, when she commented that Dawn should pay attention as well, since it would assist her in her Contests. Bertha views observation skills as useful tools not only in battles and Contests, but also in everyday life. She also prefers to keep her identity as one of Sinnoh's Elite Four a secret because she doesn't like the expectations attached to the title.

Trivia
- As noted by Shauntal of the Unova Elite Four in Pokémon Black 2 and White 2 in the form of a quote from her novel during the player's post-National Pokédex challenge, Bertha and Agatha are very similar in appearance and name (both in English and Japanese).
- Furthermore, they both are part of their regions's Elite Four, and their Japanese names both contain 菊 kiku (chrysanthemum).
- This is further corroborated by Charm of the Miss Fortune sisters, who herself bears a resemblance to both of them, and whose team is composed of Rhydon (from the same evolutionary line as Bertha's ace in Pokémon Platinum) and Gengar (Agatha's main Pokémon in essentially every canon).
- While her Hippowdon is invariably female in the games and in Pokémon Adventures, it shows male coloration in other media—namely the TCG and the anime.
- Bertha and Volkner are the only major Trainers in Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl to use a Pokémon from their in-game Platinum teams.
- Bertha is the only Sinnoh Elite Four member who was not seen battling Cynthia in the anime.
- In her initial Pokémon Platinum team, Bertha uses a level 55 Rhyperior that knows Rock Wrecker. This is impossible, as Rhyperior only learns this move at level 61 and never by breeding.
- Bertha is the first female Ground-type specialist in the series, as well as the first Ground-type Elite Four member.
- Similar to the other Sinnoh Elite Four, in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, when the players becomes champion but before Stark Mountain, Bertha's team will switch to her Platinum team. Once the player completes the Stark Mountain quest then her team will change once more.
