Vermilion City (Japanese: クチバシティ Kuchiba City) is a city in Kanto.

Situated near a sea inlet to the south, it serves as a popular sea port for ships such as the S.S. Anne. Vermilion Port is a home port for many ships. The S.S. Anne sails around the world and returns to Vermilion once a year. The S.S. Aqua sails from Olivine City in Johto to Vermilion Port. The Seagallop Ferries sail regularly to all of the Sevii Islands. Aside from the port, the other exits to the city are Route 11 and Diglett's Cave to the east. North of the city is Route 6.

Places of interest

Vermilion City is home to the "Lightning American" Lt. Surge, the Leader of the Electric-specialist Gym. The people in the town are careful about pollution, as they are afraid that an infestation of Grimer could occur if the seas were ever polluted, as Celadon City suffers from this in the Johto-based games. In Generations I to IV, wild Pokémon appear in the sea around the city.

Vermilion is also home to the Fan Club Chairman. He can be found in the Pokémon Fan Club house located just slightly north of the Gym. By talking to him, the player can obtain a voucher for a free bike,^RBYFRLG a Rare Candy,^GSCHGSS or special clothing sets.^PE

In Pokémon Yellow, an Officer Jenny found here will give out a Squirtle if the player has received the Thunder Badge. In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, she instead gives it to the player if they've caught at least 60 individual Pokémon.

Vermilion Port^GSCHGSSPE or Vermilion Harbor^RBYFRLG (Japanese: クチバ港 Kuchiba Port) is one of the larger docks in the Kanto region, and boats such as the S.S. Anne,^RBYFRLGPE S.S. Aqua,^GSCHGSS and Seagallop^FRLG dock here.

A truck present in the Generation I and III games has also been the source of rumors.

Pokémon Fan Club

The Kanto chapter of the Pokémon Fan Club is located in Vermilion. The Pokémon Fan Club is an organization spread throughout the Pokémon world, with at least one Club House in nearly every region. The Fan Club is a place for people to meet and chat about their favorite Pokémon and to show off their collections to each other. In general, the members are usually more oriented to unevolved, cute Pokémon.

By talking to the Fan Club Chairman, he will start a long talk with the player. He talks about his two favorite Pokémon, Rapidash and Fearow at length and then gives the player a voucher to get a bicycle,^RBYFRLG a Rare Candy,^GSCHGSS or clothing sets for the player based on Pikachu^P or Eevee,^E or clothing sets for both the player and their Partner Pokémon based on Raichu^P or the Eeveelutions.^E In Pokémon Yellow, he has a new hobby: taking Pokémon photos. The big photos of his Rapidash and Fearow can be seen on the walls of the clubhouse.

Vermilion Gym

Vermilion Gym in FireRed and LeafGreen

The Vermilion Gym is the official Gym of Vermilion City. Its Gym Leader, Lt. Surge, focuses on Electric-type Pokémon. Trainers who defeat him receive the Thunder Badge. The Vermilion Gym appears in all games set in the Kanto region, appearing much the same in each: the main room is filled with 15 trash cans, and Trainers are scattered about this room. Beyond this room is another, guarded by electric doors in Generation I, and an electric fence in Generation III and VII. The only way to get in the final room in these generations, where Lt. Surge is located, is to find two switches underneath the trash cans. If the first switch was found, but the player incorrectly guessed the second one, the traps would reset. In Generation II, these traps are not turned on. After Lt. Surge is defeated, he will give the player the Thunder Badge, TM24 (Thunderbolt)^RBY/TM34 (Shock Wave)^FRLGHGSS/TM36 (Thunderbolt),^PE Surge's Autograph,^PE and the ability to use Fly outside of battle.^RBYFRLG

Construction site

In the northeastern part of the city, there is an old man whose Machop is preparing a plot of land for construction of a building. They still have not finished three years after he started in Generation I, as he does not have enough money to begin building. This man's Machop can cause a glitch in Generation II. In Generation IV, the construction site consumes most of the north-eastern side of the city, playing a slightly bigger role in the game; there are many breakable rocks surrounding the building site that conceal many hidden items such as Shards, Heart Scales, and other valuable items.

In-game trade

In one of the houses south and a little east of the Pokémon Center is a girl that wants to trade the player a Farfetch'd for a Pidgey (in Japanese Blue) or Spearow.^RBYFRLG The Farfetch'd will be nicknamed "Ch'ding" in Generation III or "Dux" in Generation I, and it will be holding a Stick in Generation III. The OT will be "Elyssa" and its ID will be 08810. The Pokémon's level will be the same as the one that the player traded.

Although the sprite and name of the owner are female, Ch'ding's original Trainer data defines Elyssa as male, likely as an error. In FireRed and LeafGreen, this is undifferentiable from a female original Trainer, but if Ch'ding is traded to Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald or transferred forward to Generation IV (via Pal Park), the OT name is shown colored blue.

In Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, this house is occupied by a Gentleman who owns a Farfetch'd, again nicknamed Dux like the girl from Generation I's Farfetch'd, but he instead intends to catch Spearow himself.

In Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee, a Hiker in the Pokémon Center will trade an Alolan Geodude for a Geodude from Kanto. This can be done repeatedly.

Fishing Brother

In Generations I and III, a man known as the Fishing Guru can be found in Vermilion City. He gives away an Old Rod to the player. Later (in the Johto-based games), he is known as the Fishing Dude and claims to be the eldest of the Fishing Brothers.

Sleeping Pokémon notice

In Generations I, III, and VII, there is a notice near the entrance to Diglett's Cave about a sleeping Pokémon blocking Route 12. The notice advises people wishing to go to Lavender Town to detour through the Rock Tunnel instead in the meantime.

Pokémon Red and Blue

In Pokémon Red and Blue, the population of Vermilion City is 25 (not including the passengers on the S.S. Anne).

Pokémon Yellow

In Pokémon Yellow, the population of Vermilion City has increased to 26 (not including the passengers on the S.S. Anne). This is because Officer Jenny has been added.

Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal

In Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal, the population of Vermilion City is 30. The increase in population is possibly due to the addition of the port building.

Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen

In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Vermilion City has a population of 29 (not including the passengers on the S.S. Anne).

Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver

In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, the population of Vermilion City is 34; the population has increased by five since Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, possibly due to the addition of the port building.

Differences among generations

Vermilion Port in Generation IV

Much has changed from Generation I to Generation III. Most of the city is now covered in grass and sandy patches along the shoreline. The construction site has grown, while the Pokémon Fan Club has been redesigned and expanded. The S.S. Anne's port has also had an archway added to the entrance. In Generation II nothing major has changed, though the city has extended into Route 11 near Diglett's Cave and the Vermilion City port has been redesigned into a building, where the S.S. Aqua transports passengers to and from Olivine City in Johto. Also, Snorlax was also relocated from Route 12 to the entrance to Diglett's Cave. To move it, Trainers had to use a Pokégear tuned to the PokéFlute Channel, as the Poké Flute did not exist in the Generation II games. In Generation IV, Diglett's Cave is pushed back to Route 11.

In Pokémon Pinball, Vermilion City makes two appearances: the Seaside (Red Field) and the Streets (Blue Field).

In the Red Field, called "Vermilion City Seaside", catchable Pokémon include: Pidgey, Ekans, Oddish, Farfetch'd, Shellder and Krabby.

In the Blue Field, called "Vermilion City Streets", catchable Pokémon include: Sandshrew, Farfetch'd, Shellder, Drowzee, Krabby and Pinsir.

Original series

Vermilion City debuted in Electric Shock Showdown, where Ash battled Lt. Surge for his third Badge. The harbor appeared in Battle Aboard the St. Anne, when Ash, Misty, and Brock boarded the St. Anne.

Pokémon the Series: Diamond and Pearl

In To Thine Own Pokémon Be True!, O was revealed to have a Pokémon Ping-Pong center in Vermilion City. Dawn's Ambipom is currently training there.

Pokémon the Series: Black & White

In Best Wishes Until We Meet Again!, Ash and his friends' tour of the Decolore Islands ended at Vermilion City. The city was shown to have a local train station, with Iris and Cilan taking the train to Saffron City in order to board the Magnet Train there. Alexa also bought Cloyster boxed lunches for the two, which is exclusively sold in Vermilion City.

Pokémon Journeys: The Series

Vermilion City had a prominent role as the hometown of Goh and Chloe. Professor Cerise's aptly-named Cerise Laboratory was officially opened there in Legend? Go! Friends? Go!. Goh and Ash became Cerise's research assistants after documenting their chance encounter with a Lugia, and resided at the Cerise Laboratory during this series. Professor Cerise's daughter Chloe also lives in the city and attends a local school. In Best Friend...Worst Nightmare!, Chloe was shown to live in a house with her father, mother, and younger brother. In A Snow Day for Searching!, Goh was shown to have grown up in an apartment building with his father, mother, and grandmother. In A Crackling Raid Battle!, the Kanto Power Plant was revealed to be located near Vermilion City.

In Ivysaur's Mysterious Tower!, an outbreak of Bulbasaur and Ivysaur, a part of natural phenomena known as the "Ivysaur march", was causing traffic and minor chaos across the city. The Grass Pokémon made their way to their former grassland, to the north of Vermilion, which is now a construction site for a new Gym. After scaling the building, the Ivysaur and Bulbasaur evolved together and released pollen into the air, causing all of the city's flowers to bloom.

In Crowning the Chow Crusher!, Ash, Goh, and Team Rocket participated in the Pokémon Grand Eating Contest in Vermilion City, with Goh eventually winning.

Ash and Goh both left Vermilion City in This Could be the Start of Something Big! to start traveling on their own. Ash revisited the city in A Squad's Worth of Passion! alongside Brock and Misty. During said visit, he briefly reunited with his Squirtle and the Squirtle Squad, and helped them in dealing with a warehouse fire.

Pokémon Origins

Although Vermilion City was never properly seen in Pokémon Origins, Red recalled having visited it prior to the events of File 2: Cubone. During his visit, he obtained the HM for Cut from the captain of S.S. Anne and earned the Thunder Badge by defeating Lt. Surge at the Vermilion Gym.

Vermilion City in Pokémon Adventures

Vermilion City is split into two main areas; the center city and the harbor. The Kanto Pokémon Fan Club headquarters is located in the center city. Some of the citizens are Poké Fans and Sailors.

Red, Green & Blue arc

Vermilion City first appeared in Danger: High Voltorb and Buzz Off, Electabuzz!. After arriving, Red learned that many people in the city had gotten their Pokémon stolen. He decided to investigate the S.S. Anne, where he learned that the local Gym Leader, Lt. Surge, was behind the thefts and using the ship to transport the stolen Pokémon away. Surge tortured Red with his Electabuzz and almost succeeded in drowning him, but he was saved by his newly evolved Poliwrath. Although Surge managed to get away, his Sailor underlings were arrested and the stolen Pokémon aboard the ship were returned to their rightful owners.

Yellow arc

Vermilion City reappeared in Ekans the Ecstasy. Just when Yellow arrived there aboard the S.S. Anne, which was now transporting passengers instead of stolen Pokémon, the Team Rocket Elite Trio sabotaged the ship by exploding a bomb within its engine room. Although Yellow was able to save all of the passengers, the ship was still sunk at the harbor.

In The Kindest Tentacruel, the Pokémon Fan Club Chairman told Yellow of a legend about an underwater dome at the bottom of the Vermilion Harbor. Inside the dome was supposedly a set of unique Evolution stones that didn't disappear after being used, with one of these stones being behind the Evolution of Red's Poliwrath three years earlier. Yellow was later lead to the dome by a Tentacruel, only to find out that the Thunder, Water, and Fire Stones were missing, meaning that she wasn't the first one to have found the place.

In Breath of Dragonair Part 1, while thinking about a way to cross the ocean without Surf, Yellow learned of a surfing contest, where the main prize was going to be a Dragonair, an excellent Pokémon for crossing the sea. However, before the contest could even begin, the "prize" Dragonair started attacking everyone, as it actually belonged to Lance, who used its Hyper Beam to obliterate most of Vermilion City, claiming it was obstructing his view. When Lance started to leave, Yellow gave chase. Lance proved to be an overwhelmingly strong opponent and sent Yellow sinking into the sea. However, thanks to Pika learning Surf, Yellow was able to save herself from drowning and start crossing the sea.

FireRed & LeafGreen arc

In Now You See Me..., Red and Blue flew to Vermilion to board the Seagallop for One Island. In Start the Countdown, Starmie, the Seagallop returned to Vermilion, carrying Blue, Green, Green's parents, Lorelei, Ultima, and Professor Oak, at the same time that the Team Rocket airship, which Red was trying to control, was about to crash into the same city. Although Red was able to prevent the Forretress aboard the airship from exploding, the aircraft still nearly crash-landed, but thankfully, Mew was able to lower it safely to the ground. Afterwards, Sird appeared on the scene, making one last attempt to capture Deoxys. Although she failed, the clash between her Pokémon and Mewtwo's attacks led to the Pokédex holders present being turned to stone.

Pokémon Zensho

Vermilion City appeared in PZ04, where it was visited by Satoshi. With the S.S. Ticket he had received from Bill, he visited the S.S. Anne, where he beat Shigeru in a battle and met the ship's seasick captain. The captain told Satoshi that he was looking for a sergeant who had served in the same army unit with him in the army and uses Electric-type Pokémon. Visiting the Pokémon Fan Club for clues, Satoshi learned that the man he was looking for was Lt. Surge, the city's Gym Leader. At the Vermilion Gym, Satoshi had a battle with Lt. Surge, beating his Electabuzz with his newly evolved Charmeleon.

After the battle, Surge revealed that his Pokémon had once accidentally knocked over a tall tree towards a lieutenant he held in high regard and fled without looking back, considering himself a coward for doing so. However, said soldier turned out to be the captain of the S.S. Anne, who had saved himself from the falling tree with his specialty skill of using Cut. Out of gratitude, Satoshi received a Thunder Badge and HM01 (Cut) from the two men, who then set sail together aboard the S.S. Anne.

Trivia

• Vermilion City and Cinnabar Island are named after the same color in the English versions of the Pokémon games but not in the Japanese versions, since vermilion (クチバ kuchiba, "decayed leaves") refers to a shade of orange while crimson (グレン guren, "crimson lotus") refers to a shade of red. Vermilion is an orange-red pigment, produced from the orange-red mineral cinnabar. This explains why Vermilion City is colored orange while Cinnabar Island is colored red in the Generation I games when played with the Super Game Boy enhancements enabled on a compatible system or with the Game Boy Color enhancements available in the international releases of Pokémon Yellow (including the Virtual Console release).
• In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, normally the cutscene with Suicune that occurs here will end with Suicune running east, through the southwestern entrance to Route 11. However, if the player triggers this cutscene from said location instead of the port, Suicune will instead run south. However, Eusine will still appear on the port as usual.

Origin

Geographically, Vermilion City appears to be based on Chiba, the capital city of Chiba Prefecture. However, its design, especially as it appears in Pokémon Journeys: The Series, seems to be mostly based on Yokohama, the capital city of Kanagawa Prefecture. Additionally, during the announcement for the 2023 Pokémon World Championships, The Pokémon Company used a trailer with footage of Vermilion City taken from the Generation I games before announcing that the event would be held in Yokohama.

Vermilion City may also be inspired by Yokosuka, which has a United States Navy base, a possible inspiration for Vermilion Gym and Lt. Surge as an "American" soldier.
