Route 34 is a final trek after the long way through Ilex Forest. Unlike the route before, this route has a lot of tall grass and many Trainers. Route 34 is also where the first ever Day Care in which Pokémon can breed is located.

Route 34 (Japanese: 34ばんどうろ Route 34) is a route in central Johto connecting Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City. The route is home to Johto's Day Care.

Route description
The route is essentially straightforward after exiting Ilex Forest. There is a path where no long grass grows, however, it is filled with many trainers. This road can be difficult if a trainer doesn't go back to Azalea Town to heal their Pokémon after facing his/her rival in the forest.
The route is essentially straightforward after exiting Ilex Forest. There is a path where no long grass grows; however, it is filled with many Trainers.

The Day Care, run by an old couple, is one of the most prominent things located here. Located merely steps away from the famous Goldenrod City, this center allows for compatible male and female Pokémon to breed and produce an egg. It also allows trainers to leave up to two of their Pokémon to level up, costing, like the Pokémon Daycare on Route 5, PDollar100 plus an additional PDollar100 per level up for each Pokémon. Coincidentally, like the location of the Day Care in Kanto, this route is also the fifth route in Johto.

It also allows Trainers to leave up to two of their Pokémon to level up, costing like other Pokémon Day Cares, PDollar100 plus an additional PDollar100 per level up for each Pokémon. In the Generation II games, the player can enter the Day Care's backyard to interact with their Pokémon and surf or fish in the pond, but this is not possible in HeartGold and SoulSilver due to the Pokémon now being off-limits to the player in an area inside the Day Care itself.

After getting Surf, a secret area of the route is accessible. It has three Ace Trainer sisters: Irene, Jenn, and Kate, who the player will battle in that order in Generation II. In HeartGold and SoulSilver, Irene and Jenn will instead battle a Double Battle with the player.

Gold, Silver & Crystal
Route 34 first appeared in Gligar Glide, where Gold was spending a night there, when the Egg that Professor Elm had entrusted with him hatched into a Togepi while he slept. While Professor Elm was happy to learn that Gold had succeeded in hatching the Egg, he was outraged when it turned out Gold had inadvertently caused Togepi to pick up his gambling habits before the category had even hatched. The Professor then sent Gold to check out the Pokémon Day Care, from where Togepi's Egg had been found. After Gold had helped the Day-Care Couple catch some runaway baby Pokémon, the Day-Care Lady invited him for some training inside the Day Care. Meanwhile, the Day-Care Man made a phone call to Jasmine, revealing that Gold's Togepi was actually the offspring of her two Togetic, and inviting her to come take a look at it.

In Quilava Quandary, the Day-Care Lady locked Gold into a room filled with powerful Pokémon and told him to battle them for his training. While reluctant at first, Gold was quickly forced to battle the Pokémon, although the Day-Care Lady forced him to do so without the goggles and cue stick he usually used. While Gold was undergoing his training, the Day-Care Lady mused to herself how she was taking advantage of Gold's desire to train in order to make him make some of their lethargic Pokémon get some exercise without her having to do anything. As a result of the training, Gold's Cyndaquil, Exbo, ended up evolving into Quilava. When the Day-Care Couple heard of an earthquake that had struck Ecruteak City, they got worried of Jasmine's safety and told Gold to go find her, giving him a King's Rock as a reward for completing his training.

In Popular Pupitar, Yellow found herself and her uncle Wilton at the Day Care after Tower duo (Adventures) had attacked their boat at the Whirl Islands. In Playful Porygon2, the Day-Care Couple revealed that the medics who had saved their lives had brought them to the Day Care, based on a sketch of Jasmine in Yellow's notebook. In addition, Yellow's Chuchu and Red's Pika had gotten friendly with each other while Yellow was unconscious and had ended up producing an Egg together, much to Yellow's shock.

In The Last Battle VII, the Day Care was attacked by Neo Team Rocket Team Rocket Grunt, who tried to steal the Rainbow and Silver Wings that Green had hidden on Yellow's straw hat. Fortunately, though, Yellow managed to escape from them and fled to Ilex Forest.

Trivia
Project Routes
* In HeartGold and SoulSilver, there is a glitch with Ace Trainer Kate. She will only battle the player if they walk straight down the path. If the player walks to either side of her, she will apologize as she would after the player has defeated her. If the player walks down the path towards her after talking to her on the side she will somehow see them while facing the wrong way and then battle.
* In the Japanese versions, the three Ace Trainer sisters all have names which start with "Mari".
* The Day Care man has an unused piece of dialogue in the Generation II games, "Not yet...". This would likely be used during the breeding process to notify the player that the game needs more time to generate the Egg.

Route 34 (Japanese: 34ばんどうろ Route 34) is a route in central Johto connecting Ilex Forest and Goldenrod City. The route is home to Johto's Day Care.

Route description

The route is essentially straightforward after exiting Ilex Forest. There is a path where no long grass grows; however, it is filled with many Trainers.

The Day Care, run by an old couple, is one of the most prominent things located here. Found merely steps away from the famous Goldenrod City, this center allows for compatible male and female Pokémon to breed and produce an Egg. It also allows Trainers to leave up to two of their Pokémon to level up, costing like other Pokémon Day Cares, $100 plus an additional $100 per level up for each Pokémon. In the Generation II games, the player can enter the Day Care's backyard to interact with their Pokémon and surf or fish in the pond, but this is not possible in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver due to the Pokémon now being off-limits to the player in an area inside the Day Care itself.

After getting Surf, a secret area of the route is accessible. It has three Ace Trainer sisters: Irene, Jenn, and Kate, who the player will battle in that order in Generation II. In HeartGold and SoulSilver Versions, Irene and Jenn will instead battle a Double Battle with the player.

Route 34 Day Care in the anime

Route 34 appeared from Tricks of the Trade to The Fortune Hunters, although some of the intervening episodes, such as Fowl Play!, may have taken place in Ilex Forest instead. The route's landmarks include Palmpona, Len Town, Olesia's Wooper preschool, and Onix Tunnel. Ash caught his Totodile around this area in The Totodile Duel. In The Fortune Hunters, Ash's group visited a Day Care located in this area, similar to the games, although this particular Day Care turned out to be just a front for Butch and Cassidy's latest Pokémon-stealing scheme.

Pokémon Adventures

Gold, Silver & Crystal arc

Route 34 first appeared in Gligar Glide, where Gold was spending a night there, when the Egg that Professor Elm had entrusted with him hatched into a Togepi while he slept. While Professor Elm was happy to learn that Gold had succeeded in hatching the Egg, he was outraged when it turned out Gold had inadvertently caused Togepi to pick up his gambling habits before the Spike Ball Pokémon had even hatched.

In Popular Pupitar, Yellow found herself and her uncle Wilton at the Day Care after Lugia had attacked their boat at the Whirl Islands.

In The Last Battle VII, the Day Care was attacked by Neo Team Rocket Grunts, who tried to steal the Rainbow and Silver Wings that Green had hidden on Yellow's straw hat. Fortunately, though, Yellow managed to escape from them and fled to Ilex Forest.

Trivia

 • In Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver, there is a glitch with Ace Trainer Kate. She will only battle the player if they walk straight down the path. If the player walks to either side of her, she will apologize as she would after the player has defeated her. If the player walks down the path towards her after talking to her on the side she will somehow see them while facing the wrong way and then battle.
 • In the Japanese versions, the three Ace Trainer sisters all have names which start with "Mari".
 • The Day Care man has an unused piece of dialogue in the Generation II games, "Not yet...". This would likely be used during the breeding process to notify the player that the game needs more time to generate the Egg.
