Jirachi (Japanese: ジラーチ Jirachi) is a dual-type Steel/Psychic legendary Pokémon.

It is not known to evolve into or from any other Pokémon.

Biology

Physiology

Jirachi is a small, white humanoid Pokémon. It has short, stubby limbs and prefers to float rather than walk. Its arms have flaps that give Jirachi the appearance of having long-sleeves. On its stomach is a curved seam, which conceals a third eye, its "true" eye. It rarely opens its third eye, which has the ability to absorb the energy it needs for hibernation. It has teal triangles on its face under its eyes. These triangles resemble tears or clown makeup. It appears to be wearing a three point yellow/light gold headdress that has a metallic gleam and resembles a star. On each of the three points is a teal-colored tag, each of which are known as "wish tags." On its back are two streamers, which flow behind it like the tail on a comet.

Gender differences

Jirachi is genderless in the games. Despite this, it is referred to as male in the English dub of Jirachi: Wish Maker and female in the Brazilian dub.

Special abilities

Jirachi's Eye of Truth

Jirachi has the ability to grant wishes (only three in the manga) once every thousand years. It also has the ability to hibernate for extensive periods of time, and wakes up once every thousand years just as the Millennium Comet passes by. Jirachi descends from outer space in the Millennium Comet. Like Mew and Celebi, Jirachi can levitate in the air, though it doesn't have that ability.

Jirachi is the only known Pokémon that learns Doom Desire.

Behavior

Jirachi spends most of its time asleep and is only awake for seven days once every 1,000 years when a voice of purity sings to it. During this time, Jirachi has the power to grant wishes. It has a child-like, playful personality. It is bossy at times, especially when others refuse to entertain it.

Habitat

In the anime, Jirachi hibernates in Forina. In Pokémon FireRed and LeafGreen, Jirachi is said to live in the mountains, likely in a deep cavern. It also is known to descend from outer space in the Millenium Comet.

In the anime

Jirachi in the anime

Jirachi's only major anime appearance was in Jirachi: Wish Maker. Jirachi will only awaken during the week of the thousand-year comet and if there is a partner that can be its friend. Max filled that role in the movie. However, The Great Butler wanted to use Jirachi's powers to awaken Groudon.

A Jirachi also had a very brief cameo in The Rise of Darkrai.

In the manga

In Pokémon Adventures

Jirachi in the Pokémon Adventures manga

The seven days Jirachi was awake coincided with the seven days of the opening ceremonies for the Battle Frontier. At the request of Professor Oak, Emerald tried to capture Jirachi while he was there. However, Guile Hideout managed to capture Jirachi first. At the end of the chapter, Jirachi opened its third eye to Emerald and revived the five petrified Pokédex Holders, and goes back into its lengthy slumber as Emerald gives it his thanks.

Other appearances

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Jirachi appears as a rare Poké Ball Pokémon in its first appearance in the Super Smash Bros. series. The chance of it appearing is 1 in 493 (the amount of Pokémon in the current National Pokédex). Like the other "secret" Pokémon, it drops rare items instead of just flying away. In Jirachi's case, the items are stickers.

Trophy Information

A Wish Pokémon. It's said to awaken for seven days once every thousand years, with the ability to grant any wish asked of it. It is truly a Pokémon of which dreams are made. In combat it uses its wish power to attack. Its attack, Doom Desire, which causes light to rain down from the heavens to do tremendous damage, is especially powerful.

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Pinball: Ruby & Sapphire: While in the Ruins, one of the slot machine prizes is the chance to capture Jirachi. Jirachi will move around and must be hit three times in 30 seconds for the capture to be successful. There is only one chance per pinball game.

Trivia

  • Jirachi is the fastest Template:Type2 Pokémon, with a base speed of 100.
    • Also, Jirachi is the lightest of all Template:Type2 Pokémon, which mostly are very heavy.
  • Jirachi is the only Pokémon with Serene Grace as its single ability.
  • Jirachi, other than Smeargle and Arceus when not holding the Draco Plate, is the only non-Dragon-type Pokémon legitimately able to know the move Draco Meteor.
  • In the Anime, it is one of the few Pokémon who can speak telepathically.
  • Jirachi and Manaphy have never been given an in-game location. Each Pokémon also starred in a Pokémon movie where they bonded with Max and May, respectively.
    • Jirachi stars in the movie in which Groudon made its first movie appearance, while Manaphy is the star Pokémon in a later movie in which Kyogre made its first movie appearance.
  • In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of the Sky, its streamers are a light green (most noticeably in its overworld sprites rather than the headshots.)
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, Team Aqua leader Archie uses Jirachi's power to create a Kyogre monster, whereas in the anime movie Jirachi: Wish Maker, former Team Magma member Butler uses Jirachi's power to create a Groudon monster.
  • Jirachi was the first Pokémon to be distributed via Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection. Previously, only the Event Items needed to obtain Pokémon were distributed.
    • Jirachi was also the first to be distributed over Wi-Fi in Japan. However, in English-speaking countries and Europe, Pikachu-colored Pichu was distributed over Wi-Fi before Jirachi.
  • Jirachi is the only Pokémon in Generation III whose name starts with the letter J.
  • Jirachi learns Psychic earlier than any other Pokémon, at level 20.
  • Jirachi is the only Pokémon that cannot evolve that can learn a move twice by leveling up (it learns Rest at levels 5 and 30).

Origin

Bulbanews
Bulbanews has an article related to this subject:

Jirachi's design and ability of granting wishes probably refer to the habit of "wishing upon a star", so that the wish will come true. Considering its humanoid appearance and ability to grant wishes, it is also possible that it was inspired by Arabic myths about genies, or djinn. In some myths, imprisoned genies would grant wishes to the person who released them. The tags of paper on its head are a reference toward Tanabata.

Name origin

Jirachi gets its name from желать zhelatʹ, which is Russian for "to desire". It could also be from the Japanese word 幸 sachi, which means wish, happiness, or fortune. It also may have gotten its name from the Biblical term, "Jireh," which means provider.

In other languages

  • German: Jirachi
  • French: Jirachi
  • Korean: 지라치 Jirachi
  • Chinese (Taiwan): 基拉祈 Jī Lā Qí - Transliteration of its Japanese name. In addition, 祈 means "to pray".
