Chuck (Japanese: シジマ Shijima) is the Gym Leader of Cianwood City's Gym, officially known as the Cianwood Gym. His specialty is Template:Type2 Pokémon. Chuck gives out the Storm Badge to Trainers who beat him.

Chuck appears in Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver as the Leader of the Cianwood Gym. A Template:Type2 Trainer, he is known to spar with his Pokémon to train both them and himself. His in-game title is "His Roaring Fists Do the Talking". Chuck is married, but spends little time with his wife. She isn't too fond of this, and spends her time standing outside the gym, perhaps waiting in hope that he will come home.

Chuck's gym is very different between the two generations it has appeared. In Generation II, once challengers have made their way through his gym, Chuck will attempt to intimidate them before battle by telling how his Pokémon "will crush stones and shatter bones." He then lifts and tosses a boulder prior to accepting the challenge. In Generation IV, Chuck awaits his challengers underneath a large waterfall. He will not notice the player approach him until the water under which he has been meditating stops flowing.

Chuck enjoys a good battle, but after losing he vows to train 24 hours a day. After he is defeated, his wife will give the player HM02 (Fly), which the successful Trainer will now be able to use outside of battle. She also comments that she is grateful that her husband would be doing more training, since he was getting "a little chubby". In addition to the Storm Badge, Chuck gives out TM01 (DynamicPunch in Generation II; Focus Punch in Generation IV).

Most of the Gym Leaders in Pokémon HeartGold and SoulSilver will vacate their gyms and travel around Johto or Kanto on occasion, but Chuck is the sole exception. He holds true to his promise of training 24 hours a day; instead, his Pokégear phone number must be obtained from his wife. If the player calls him on a Wednesday night, however, Chuck will make an exception and travel to Saffron City to battle with an enhanced team in the Fighting Dojo.

Chuck also appears in Pokémon Stadium 2's Johto Gym Leader Castle. This is the only time he can be fought using Pokémon not of the Template:Type2; his second six-Pokémon team in this game is actually composed of only two Fighting-type Pokémon.

"Wahahah! So you've come this far! Let me tell you, I'm tough! My Pokémon will crush stones and shatter bones! Watch this! Urggh! Oooarrgh! There! Scared now, are you? What? It has nothing to do with Pokémon? That's true! Come on. We shall do battle!"
  • When defeated
"Wha? Huh? I lost? How about that! You're worthy of Storm Badge!"

"That is Focus Punch. It doesn't land if the foe you're attacking hits you first, but it's very powerful if it manages to hit!"

"Yo! Chuck here! What's up? You know, I spend a lot of time training under a pounding waterfall every day. I guess that's why I’ve been disagreeing with my wife a lot lately. I was thinking of taking her on a trip as an apology, but I can't think of any good places to go. ...That's it! I should take her to Tohjo Falls! What do you think?"

Chuck in the anime

Chuck made his only anime appearance in Machoke, Machoke Man!. Ash and his friends met a man roughhousing with a Machoke. After following him, Ash discovered that the man was Chuck, Gym Leader of the Cianwood Gym. Even though he is the Fighting master, he gets tired easily as he is a little fat. His wife continually makes fun of him because of this. He is positive-minded and emotional and has a tendency to break out into tears if happy. His battle technique is to battle with his Pokémon to improve their concentration.

Later Chuck and Ash had their battle for a Storm Badge. Ash used Pikachu who got defeated by Chuck's Poliwrath. Ash then used Bayleef who defeated Poliwrath and Machoke.

It was later revealed that Brawly, the Dewford Town Gym Leader, used to be one of the many students of Chuck.

Ash then chooses Bayleef, and then Chuck issues Poliwrath to use Water Gun, which Bayleef dodges. Ash then orders Bayleef to use Razor Leaf and Vine Whip, slamming Poliwrath to the ground. Chuck orders Poliwrath to use Focus Energy, and Poliwrath while wobbling trying to stand up straight, Bayleef uses Body Slam to defeat Poliwrath.

This can be seen when both of them cry and hug each other when they are happy. They fight with each other often to improve their concentration in battles; they use this technique even before important matches.

Chuck used it against Ash's Bayleef in a Gym battle. With a powerful Submission attack, Machoke almost defeated Bayleef, but with Ash's support, Bayleef won the match.

Machoke's known moves are Karate Chop, Submission, Focus Energy and Cross Chop.

Chuck taught Blue martial arts and how to train Pokémon when the boy was very young.

Chuck in the HG/SS chapter

He initially was training for a battle with Wayne in his first appearance in Volume 10, but found that he was too late. He then noticed something amiss when he found his sandbags and Wayne's jacket slashed, but then he met Suicune, and with help from Wayne. He figured out that it was the cause of the jacket and sandbags and attempted to catch it with Wayne, but to no avail as previous Gym Leaders such as Clair had tried to do.

Three volumes later, as fate would have it, Chuck would find himself facing the very disciple he himself raised in the opening ceremony of the Indigo League, and after a tough fight, his Hitmontop fell to Blue's Rhydon. Impressed with his student's progress, especially using a newly captured Pokémon he had to raise anew, Chuck acknowledged Blue as a Gym Leader worthy of his title.

Afterwards, when members of Team Rocket under the Masked Man's command come to ambush the unsuspecting lambs of the Pokémon League, Chuck, alongside other members of the 16 Gym Leaders, fought in the Magnet Train to stop the Rockets' advances, not knowing it was a diversion.

Years later, Chuck, Falkner, and Bugsy appear before Silver.
