Azurill (Japanese: ルリリ Ruriri) is a Template:Type2 baby Pokémon.

It evolves into Marill via happiness, who evolves into Azumarill starting at level 18.

Biology

Physiology

Azurill's ball tail appears to be the biggest of its evolution family, this is due to Azurill's body itself being small. It is large and bouncy and packed full of the nutrients this Pokémon needs to grow. Azurill can be seen bouncing and playing on its big, rubbery tail. The tail is a flotation device in water. It is the only one of its evolutions with white to the side of its cheeks, not under its chest. It also has no arms; however, this does not affect its mobility.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Azurill spins its tail as if it were a lasso, then hurls it far. The momentum of the throw sends its body flying, too. Using this unique action, one of these Pokémon managed to hurl itself a record 33 feet.

Battling-wise, Azurill are incredibly weak due to their infantile state, having very little potential.

Behavior

On sunny days they gather at the edge of water and splash about for fun. Azurill will spin its tail as if it were a lasso, then hurl it far. The momentum of the throw sends its body flying, too.

Habitat

Azurill live by the water.

NPC appearances

  • Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness: Azurill is one of the residents of Treasure Town. He gets captured by Drowzee and is forced to get treasure for him, but is rescued by the player's team. Azurill and his older brother Marill continue to search for the item Water Float, hearing that there's one at the beach. Soon after, Azurill and Marill find out that it is at Amp Plains and asks if the player and his/her partner could get it. Later on, Azurill falls into an unwakeable nightmare, and the player has to get Drowzee's help to look into his dream.

Trivia

  • Azurill is the first Generation III Pokémon by National Pokédex order to be related to a Pokémon of a previous generation.
  • Azurill is, by statistical average, the second-weakest Pokémon in the games, stronger only than Sunkern.
  • Azurill and Wynaut are the first two Pokémon which are only breedable from their evolved forms if the parent is holding a certain incense.
  • Azurill is one of only two Pokémon to change its type completely upon evolution. The other is Eevee.
  • Polka dots are known in Japan as 水玉 mizutama, literally meaning water balls. This may explain why Azurill is known as the Polka Dot Pokémon.
    • This name also reflects the way Azurill is indirectly related with Water.
  • Azurill is currently the only Pokémon which does not evolve based on gender whose gender ratio does not match that of its evolved forms, being female 75% of the time while Marill and Azumarill are female only 50% of the time. Due to this, one of every three female Azurill evolve into a male Marill (whether or not this will happen is determined by the hidden personality value). It is unknown if this is an error in programming or if it was intentional to reference real-world animals that change sex under specific conditions.
  • Azurill, along with Wailmer and Kecleon, was one of the first Generation III Pokémon revealed, in early March of 2001.
  • Azurill has the lowest base stat total of all baby Pokémon.
  • Azurill is the only Pokémon which evolves through happiness whose evolution evolves by level.
  • With Huge Power, Azurill can reach the highest Attack stat of all Baby Pokémon, capping at a maximum of 304.
  • Azurill is the only non-Water-type to learn Waterlog, but only through breeding.
    • However, it does evolve into a Water-type Pokémon.

Origin

Azurill appears to be a mouse combined with a beach ball or possibly a personal flotation device or lifebuoy.

Name origin

Azurill's name is a combination of azure, referring to its color, and rill. Ruriri seems to be a corruption of 瑠璃 ruri, lapis lazuli, which is probably in its evolution's, Marill's, name, or it could be a variation of azurite, a blue rock. The "Azu" part of Azurill's name may come from azul, the Spanish word for blue.
