Quotes

Pokémon Emerald

Sootopolis Gym
  • Before battle
"Let me ask you. Did you know? Ah, I should not be so coy. It was I who taught Wallace everything there is to know about Pokémon. Once, I had given up my position as the Gym Leader. In my place, I had entrusted Wallace with the gym. However, a compelling reason arose for me to make a comeback. Ah, but enough chatter. Let us begin our match, shall we? Please, you shall bear witness to our artistry. A grand illusion of water sculpted by Pokémon and myself!"
  • When defeated
"Ahahaha, excellent! Very well, you are the winner. From you, I sense the brilliant shine of skill that will overcome all. However, compared with me or even Wallace, you are lacking in elegance. Perhaps I should make you a loan of my outfit? ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... Hahaha, I merely jest! Rather than my clothes, I shall reward you with this, the Rain Badge."
  • After being defeated
"Having the Rain Badge shall assure you the full obedience of all your Pokémon to your every command. The Rain Badge also allows the use of the HM move Waterfall to scale walls of cascading water. And, so that you never forget the battle we shared, take this..."
"The Technical Machine I handed you contains Water Pulse. In use, it will occasionally confuse the target with ultrasonic waves."
"The Trainers who have gathered all the Gym Badges of Hoenn should make way to the ultimate destination. The Pokémon League. Travel to the easternmost reaches of Hoenn, to the island of Ever Grande. There, you shall find the Pokémon League."
Rematch
  • Calling him (ready for a rematch):
"Hoho... <Player>... Our Sootopolis Gym has finally reopened. If you wish to see me, you are welcome to visit anytime."
  • Before battle
"Ah, this Gym had returned to its usual state of serenity... But our young typhoon has returned to put us to the test again! Well, my friend, most certainly! I shall be delighted to dance with you as often as you wish!"
  • When defeated
"Ahahaha, you are the winner! You have defeated me again!"
  • After being defeated
"If I told you to become my apprentice, you will refuse, I am sure. I would like to make a gift of my coat to you. But again, you will refuse. I imagine that to be so. And that, my friend, is a certain sign of nobility!"

In the anime

Juan in the anime

Juan is quite the celebrity type in Sootopolis, putting on shows with his Pokémon. He has many female fans, and is considered very dashing. In addition to being a Gym Leader, he is a former winner of the Grand Festival. He appeared in The Great Eight Fate and Eight Ain't Enough when he battled Ash, who won the Rain Badge after a tough battle.

He has a butler, Sebastian, who also serves as the Sootopolis Gym assistant. Juan uses unique rules in his Gym matches: the first round is a double battle held in a large swimming pool, while the other rounds are held in a battlefield that resembles a lake surrounded by land.

Juan also makes a cameo appearance in a flashback in Playing The Leveling Field!.

Sealeo made a cameo in Team Rocket's electric net but was eventually freed.

Sealeo was one of the two Pokémon Juan used in the first round of his battle with Ash. Sealeo used Blizzard on Pikachu and Snorunt, but Snorunt countered it with Icy Wind. It then tried to hit Pikachu with Aurora Beam, but Pikachu dodged. When Ash switched Snorunt for Corphish and attacked with BubbleBeam, Sealeo dived into the water and tried hitting Pikachu again, but once again Pikachu dodged. After Sealeo was left alone against both of Ash's Pokémon it used Ice Ball repeatedly and almost won the battle, but was eventually taken down by Corphish's Crabhammer.

Seaking

Seaking battled alongside Sealeo in the double battle against Pikachu and Snorunt. It used Horn Drill to reflect Pikachu's Electric attacks at Snorunt. When Ash's Pokémon were attempting to attack from up close, Seaking hit Snorunt with Hyper Beam, forcing Ash to switch Snorunt for Corphish. Seaking then dived and used Horn Attack, but Corphish caught it by the horn. Seaking followed up with Horn Drill, damaging Corphish, but was then hit by Pikachu's Iron Tail and fainted.

Luvdisc
Juan's Luvdisc
Debut The Great Eight Fate!
Voice actors
Japanese
English Rachael Lillis

It first appeared in The Great Eight Fate! where it put a dazzling performance with the other of Juan's Pokémon, it was later captured by Team Rocket but helped to get free.

The second round of his battle with Ash, Juan chose Luvdisc against Grovyle. Luvdisc started out with Water Pulse, but Grovyle dodged in time and countered with Leaf Blade. Luvdisc, however, was fast enough to dodge that attack and use Sweet Kiss, confusing Grovyle. Grovyle hit itself in confusion, and Luvdisc finished it off with Water Gun, which resulted in a loss for Grovyle despite the type advantage. Ash switched back to Corphish. The two Pokémon kept dodging each other's attacks, until Luvdisc dived underwater and Ash ordered Corphish to hit the water with Crabhammer. Corphish's attack, however, sprayed the battlefield with water, simulating heavy rain, which activated Luvdisc's ability, Swift Swim, allowing it to move even faster than before. Eventually, though, Corphish managed to hit Luvdisc with another Crabhammer, taking it out of the battle.

Whiscash

The fourth Pokémon Juan used against Ash was Whiscash, who easily defeated Ash's Corphish with Surf and Rock Smash. Ash then chose Swellow, but Whiscash grabbed it and used Tickle, followed by Hyper Beam. Juan thought he won the round, but Swellow recovered and used Aerial Ace, even after Whiscash dived underwater. After missing another Hyper Beam and getting hit by another Aerial Ace, Whiscash was unable to battle.

Milotic
Juan's Milotic

Milotic first appeared in The Great Eight Fate where it was used in a water exhibition. It also won in a battle against Team Rocket. Milotic is Juan's strongest Pokémon as well as most experienced. It won Juan many contests as well as the Ribbon Cup many years ago when he was a Pokémon coordinator. He later used Milotic as his final Pokémon in the gym battle against Ash.

With its elegant grace and power, it was able to gain the upper hand against Ash. It defeated Ash's Swellow with Hydro Pump and Twister and put up a good fight against Pikachu as well thanks to its ability to Recover after Electric attacks. However, Pikachu pulled Milotic below the water and then used Thunder to defeat it earning Ash the Rain Badge.

Juan was once Wallace's mentor and the Sootopolis Gym Leader. Later, Wallace succeeded him as the Gym Leader after winning the Hoenn Pokémon League. When Hoenn got into the crisis because of the fight between Groudon and Kyogre, Wallace had to take up the place as the Champion and asked Juan to take over as the Gym Leader again.

He was the one who rescued Tate and Liza when they were trapped in Mack's fire illusion in Mt. Pyre, as well as Ruby and Sapphire when they were being blown away by the Groudon's and Kyogre's energy in Sootopolis. He brought all of them to the Mirage Island and requested Liza & Tate to train Ruby and Sapphire about double battle, in order to prepare the two trainers for the final showdown against Groudon and Kyogre. Juan himself also trained Ruby and Sapphire to increase their mental strength, so that they would not be controlled by the two Orbs, as Maxie and Archie had been.

As he had been Wallace's mentor, Ruby respected him right from the beginning and calls him "Great Master" (大師匠, dai shishou).

Juan would sometimes use French phrases like "Bonjour" and "très bien".

Trivia

  • In Emerald, Juan is the only Gym Leader whose highest-leveled Pokémon, Kingdra, isn't one from Generation III.
    • He and Clair of the Blackthorn Gym are the only Gym Leaders whose highest-leveled Pokémon in initial matches are the same species.
  • Juan's team in the anime is the same team Wallace uses in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
  • Both Juan and Giovanni are the eighth Gym Leader in a region introduced in an odd-numbered generation. Both of their names are a foreign version of the name "John".
  • Juan is the only Hoenn Gym Leader not to be shown with the same team in the anime as in the games (while some Gym Leaders had Pokémon evolve or join their team, all the previous leaders were shown with the same team as their game counterparts at one point). Instead, Juan has a Milotic from Wallace's appearance in the anime.
  • In the Latin American dub of The Great Eight Fate, Meowth and the narrator mention that Juan resembles the Mexican actor Rene Casados.
  • Juan is similar to Fantina in that both speak French (Juan does so in Pokémon Adventures), and both are Coordinators and Gym Leaders.
  • Juans Crawdaunt is his only Pokémon that doesn't know any Water-type attacks.
