Chikorita (Japanese: チコリータ Chicorita) is a Grass-type Pokémon introduced in Generation II.

It evolves into Bayleef starting at level 16, which evolves into Meganium starting at level 32.

Along with Cyndaquil and Totodile, Chikorita is one of the three starter Pokémon of Johto available at the beginning of Pokémon Gold, Silver, Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver.

Biology

Chikorita is a small, pale-green, quadrupedal Pokémon with dark-green buds around its neck. Its head is large in proportion to the rest of its body, and it has big red eyes. Chikorita has four short legs with a single nailed toe on each and a stubby tail. On top of its head is a large, green leaf that is usually longer than its body. A soothing aroma wafts from the leaf, which can calm battling Pokémon. The leaf is also used to sense temperature and humidity. Chikorita actively seeks out and enjoys the sun's warmth.

Chikorita can be found in grasslands. However, due to its status as a starter Pokémon, a wild Chikorita is hard to come by and it is generally found under the ownership of Trainers. Chikorita has a docile nature.

Ash's Chikorita

Ash caught a female Chikorita in The Chikorita Rescue. She had such high affections for Ash that sometimes came to a few faults, such as refusing to be switched out for Pikachu. Chikorita later evolved into Bayleef in Current Events while protecting Ash from Team Rocket.

Casey's Chikorita

Casey's starter Pokémon Chikorita debuted in The Double Trouble Header. It evolved into a Bayleef in The Bug Stops Here, and later evolved into a Meganium when Casey was next seen in Here's Lookin' at You, Elekid.

Vincent's Chikorita

Chikorita is Vincent's starter Pokémon that he received from Professor Elm. It evolved all the way to Meganium prior to The Legend of Thunder!.

Team Go-Getters

A Chikorita was a member of Team Go-Getters in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Team Go-Getters Out of the Gate!.

Other

In The Search for the Legend, Silver has a Chikorita behaves much in the same way to him as Pikachu does to Ash, including traveling on his shoulder instead of a Poké Ball.

In An Egg Scramble!, Lyra used a Chikorita in her battle against Dawn's Piplup, but it lost. In Bagged Then Tagged!, it and Khoury's Croconaw participated in a Tag Battle against Ash and Dawn, battling Cyndaquil and Monferno; both were defeated.

In Arceus and the Jewel of Life, a Chikorita assisted Pikachu and the Spiky-eared Pichu in the distant past.

In PK23 and Meloetta's Moonlight Serenade, a Chikorita befriended Pikachu and his friends.

In Time After Time!, Horace was shown to own a Chikorita. It was present with him when he visited the Ilex Forest shrine and reunited with Goh. In Battling in the Freezing Raid!, it was revealed to have evolved into Bayleef.

Tsubaki owns a Chikorita in Pocket Monsters HGSS Jō's Big Adventure. It had a battle with Jō's Totodile and lost. Chikorita evolved into a Bayleef and then into a Meganium when Tsubaki met up with Jō in Team Rocket's headquarters in Mahogany Town.

Pokémon Adventures

Chikorita debuted in Murkrow Row. Professor Elm owned a Chikorita in addition to a Totodile and a Cyndaquil. After its fellow starter Pokémon already found Trainers of their own, Chikorita ran away from Elm's lab in order to meet Crystal. Although Crystal was initially reluctant to let the Chikorita join her team, she decided to accept it after seeing its courage and nicknamed it Megaree. It later evolved into a Bayleef during a battle with a wild Larvitar.

A Chikorita appeared in Out-Odding Oddish, under the ownership of a Pokéathlon participant.

Pokémon Gold & Silver: The Golden Boys

Main article: Black's Chikorita

Black owned Bayleef as a Chikorita. It was his starter Pokémon when he began his journey in Johto. However, he stole the Chikorita from Professor Elm's lab instead of having Elm give it to him. It evolved into a Bayleef prior to meeting up with Gold again. During an encounter with Lapras, Black released the Bayleef after it failed to defeat Lapras and Gold took Bayleef in.

• In PokéPark Wii: Pikachu's Adventure Chikorita is one of Pikachu's best friends. She is kidnapped by Treecko and Mankey and sent to Venusaur's lair where she is later rescued. After Pikachu rescues her, she goes to the Meeting Place where she builds the treehouse. She later accompanies Pikachu to the Sky Pavilion along with Piplup and Charmander where she meets Mew.

Trivia

Chikorita with its original yellow body

• The Chikorita family is the only evolutionary line of a starter Pokémon to keep their Japanese voices in the English dub of the anime, due to having nearly identical names in English and Japanese.
• In the anime, Chikorita have had the most Trainers among the Johto starter Pokémon. One Chikorita has been trained by each of Ash, Casey, Vincent, Silver, Lyra and Horace. However, Ash is the only one who is confirmed to not have received Chikorita as a starter Pokémon.
• Chikorita is the only starter Pokémon that cannot be used in the Pokémon Jump minigame.
• In both early artwork and the in-game sprites of Pokémon Gold and Silver, Chikorita's body is yellow. This was changed to light green in later artwork and the Pokémon Crystal sprites.
• An early demo of Pokémon Gold and Silver in 1997 shows Chikorita's name as Happa (Japanese: ハッパ), which literally means leaf.
• Due to a programming error, Chikorita is not required in order to receive the Diploma in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire.
• Chikorita, along wih other Pokémon that have a 8:1 gender ratio, are not possible to be female and shiny at the same time.

Origin

Chikorita appears to be based on sauropods. Its shape and appearance also alludes to that of a pear, or a Belgian endive, a type of chicory.

Name origin

Chikorita and Chicorita may be a combination of chicory (a flowering plant) and -ita (the feminine form of the Spanish suffix for something small or young).
