Light trio is a fan term for the trio of Legendary Pokémon consisting of Solgaleo, Lunala, and Necrozma. They originated from Ultra Space, but currently reside in the Alola region.
Solgaleo and Lunala are the game mascots of Pokémon Sun and Moon, respectively, while Dusk Mane and Dawn Wings Necrozma are the respective game mascots of Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon.
Overview
Solgaleo and Lunala were introduced as the mascots in the first Generation VII core games, Pokémon Sun and Moon, and two forms of Necrozma were the mascots for the second Generation VII core games. Solgaleo is an emissary of the sun known as the "beast that devours the sun". Lunala is an emissary of the moon known as the "beast that calls the moon". According to Pokédex entries, Solgaleo and Lunala are said to be, respectively, the male and female evolutions of Cosmog. However, the gender of both are considered unknown by the games. Necrozma, the third member of the trio, actively seeks out the other two to steal the light they possess, allowing it to regain its true form, Ultra Necrozma. When Necrozma steals the light of Solgaleo or Lunala, it becomes Dusk Mane Necrozma or Dawn Wings Necrozma, respectively, which, through the Ultranecrozium Z and the Ultra Burst transformation, can become Ultra Necrozma.
History and myths
The mythologies of the trio talk about their connection to the ancient Alola royal family and the civil war between islands that happened in the region long ago. According to a book called "The Light of Alola" found in Malie Library, a SolgaleoSUS/LunalaMUM appeared in Alola many years ago through an Ultra Wormhole. The ancient kings of Alola bowed down to the Legendary Pokémon, worshiping it. The legendary Pokémon created a guardian to bring peace to each island: the Guardian deities. After achieving peace in the region, the Guardian deities battled the legendary Pokémon but were defeated by it, who then however gave the Tapunium Z to them as a reward. The Legendary Pokémon then created several Cosmog as heirs for Alola, giving the Guardian deities the task of watching over them until they have fully evolved.
The kings of Alola gave their thanks by manufacturing two flutes, the Sun and Moon Flutes and in gratitude, they played a song at the Altar of the SunneSUS/Altar of the MooneMUM, at which point the Legendary Pokémon returned to Ultra Space. It is said that if the melody of the flutes is played again at a truly necessary moment, the legendary Pokémon will return.
In ancient times, Necrozma was referred to as the "Blinding One" who once shared its light across Ultra Space and Alola. Z-Moves were created from this light along with the aura that surrounds Totem Pokémon. However, the residents of Ultra Megalopolis, including ancestors of the Ultra Recon Squad, attempted to gain control of Necrozma to recreate the light it shares. As a result, Necrozma was permanently crippled, transforming into a crystalline body while experiencing constant pain. Pieces of its original body rained down onto Alola in the form of Sparkling Stones, which would result in the creation of the Z-Power Ring. Necrozma attempted to return to its original form by stealing all of the light from Ultra Megalopolis, leaving it covered in darkness. In response, the residents locked Necrozma in the Megalo Tower to prevent it from escaping.
According to secret notes found in the Malie Library, Necrozma at one point invaded Alola, stealing all of its light, and covering the region in darkness as a result. SolgaleoUS/LunalaUM, along with the Guardian deities, fought together against Necrozma at the Tapu Village to recover the stolen light. Necrozma then defeated and absorbed the Legendary Pokémon to become Dusk ManeUS/Dawn WingsUM Necrozma. A youth, along with the Guardian deities, used the power of the Z-Crystals and Sparkling Stones to free SolgaleoUS/LunalaUM from Necrozma, who was then banished from Alola. Due to its actions, Necrozma was called the "Pillager of Light" by the ancient king of Alola, who ordered that all books mentioning Necrozma were to be burned to prevent further panic. However, not all were destroyed.
Anime
A similar legend for the light trio, particularly Necrozma, was revealed during Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon. The tale had two parts to it. According to Tough Guy Trials!, Ultra Necrozma, along with Solgaleo and Lunala, emerged from an Ultra Wormhole, into a newly born Alola covered in darkness. Together, the trio showed their light energy in the Alola region, filling the region with light. In gratitude, the people of Alola passed the legend in the story, to preserve it, thus the story is called "The Legend of the Blinding One". The name Blinding One, originated from the people who named Necrozma, who was the brightest star. The second part of the tale was revealed in Filling the Light with Darkness!, after sharing all of its light on Alola, Necrozma darkened and changed to its current form, entering a deep slumber. Eventually, Solgaleo and Lunala returned to Alola. They shared their light with Necrozma, not only awakening it but restoring it to its Ultra Form. It then fled back into the Ultra Wormhole.
In The Prism Between Light and Darkness!, it's revealed by a Naganadel in Poipole's world that long ago, Necrozma darkened once again by protecting their world from a meteor strike.
Similar movesets
Solgaleo's signature move is Sunsteel Strike, a damage-dealing Steel-type move that ignores the target's Ability. Lunala's signature move is Moongeist Beam, a damage-dealing Ghost-type move that ignores the target's Ability. For the duration of these moves or when using their special powers, Solgaleo and Lunala change into their Radiant Sun phase and Full Moon phase, respectively. Necrozma's signature moves are Photon Geyser— a damage-dealing Psychic-type move that ignores the target's Ability, which also varies between physical attack and special attack depending on which of the stats is highest—and Prismatic Laser, the highest base power damage-dealing Psychic-type move. When Necrozma merges with Solgaleo or Lunala, it can use the signature move and signature Z-Move of the Pokémon it merged with. When it attacks in its base form, part of Necrozma's body glows white.
In Generation VII, all three have a signature Z-Move that ignores the target's Ability.

Pokémon the Series: Sun & Moon
Solgaleo and Lunala both debuted in A Dream Encounter!, where they appeared to Ash Ketchum in a dream after descending to the Altar of the Sunne through two Ultra Wormholes. There, they created a Cosmog, which Ash later found and took care of. The Cosmog was then given the name Nebby by Lillie. Nebby later evolved into Cosmoem during the events of Faba's Revenge! after being forced by Faba to open an Ultra Wormhole. In Revealing the Stuff of Legend!, the guardian deities helped Nebby evolve into Solgaleo after performing a ritual. Nebby assisted Ash and his classmates in rescuing Lusamine from Nihilego in Ultra Deep Sea before returning to the wild in The Professors' New Adventure!.
Solgaleo and Lunala appeared in Tough Guy Trials! in a fantasy, along with Ultra Necrozma, as part of a legend that explains the origins of Alola and how the three brought light into the region.
Necrozma debuted in Filling the Light with Darkness!, appearing alongside Nebby and a Lunala.
Pokémon Journeys: The Series

Pokémon Evolutions
- Main article: Nebby
In The Eclipse, Selene and Lillie approach the Altar of the Moone and together, they play the Sun and Moon Flutes to activate the altar. A bright pulse of light erupts from the altar's central platform, prompting Nebby to fly into the light, triggering its evolution from a Cosmoem into a Lunala as the light fades. An Ultra Wormhole opens up above the altar, dropping Lusamine and Guzma to the ground, severely beaten and injured. Lillie runs over to her mother, and a shaken Lusamine begs for the children to run away, describing the Legendary Pokémon Necrozma as a monster that attacked as soon as it approached.
Later, Necrozma tears its way out of the wormhole. After exchanging a look with Lillie, Lunala soars forth to do battle, exchanging a series of devastating attacks with the Prism Pokémon. Ultimately, after Nebby gets pinned by Necrozma, the latter absorbs Nebby into its body, changing into its Dawn Wings form.

Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc
A Cosmog named Nebby first appeared in The Decision and the Tournament of Six, where it was under the care of Lillie. In A Raid and Po Town, Nebby was revealed to have evolved into Cosmoem. Later, it is revealed that another Cosmog exists. That Cosmog appears in Confusion and Monsters from Another World, where it was used by Guzma to open up many Ultra Wormholes and summon multiple Ultra Beasts to Alola.
It was revealed that Cosmog had evolved into a Cosmoem and was picked up by Plumeria. Plumeria tried using it to force Faba to tell her where Guzma was taken to. Before she could get her answers, it flew out of her hands and met with Nebby in the skies above Poni Island. Upon Play the Melody That Echoes in the Altar, the guardian deities took Sun and Moon and placed them on the Poni Altar with the Sun and Moon Flutes. By playing the flutes together, Sun and Moon caused the Altar to react and release a light that hit both Cosmoem. The light caused Cosmoem and Nebby to evolve into Solgaleo and Lunala, respectively.
Necrozma appeared from an Ultra Wormhole in the Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun & Ultra Moon arc. It grabbed Solgaleo and Sun and dragged them inside. Later, Necrozma confronted Zygarde and after a short fight, Necrozma absorbed the energy from Dulse to turn into Ultra Necrozma.
Solgaleo and Lunala battled alongside Complete Forme Zygarde to take down Ultra Necrozma using their signature moves, Sunsteel Strike, Moongeist Beam, and Core Enforcer, respectively, weakening Necrozma enough to be caught by the Ultra Recon Squad.
