Marill (Japanese: マリル Maril) is a Template:Type2 Pokémon.

It evolves from Azurill via happiness, and evolves into Azumarill starting at level 18.

Biology

Physiology

Marill is a small blue mammalian Pokémon. It has a nearly spherical shape with a white underside (belly) and round ears with red ear insides. It also possesses a wiry black tail with a blue "bubble" on the end of it. The tail's jagged appearance originally led people to believe that it was related to Pikachu. Marill's tail is flexible and configured to stretch.

Gender differences

None.

Special abilities

Aside from being able to swim well, it also has excellent hearing. It has water-repellent fur that allows it ease of swimming and reduces friction with the water. The tip of its tail, which contains oil that is lighter than water, keeps Marill afloat while swimming.

Behavior

Its tail can be seen bobbing on the water's surface while Marill dives underwater to feed on aquatic plants. When fishing for food at the edge of a fast-running stream, Marill wraps its tail around the trunk of a tree. Although the behavior of bouncing on its tail is more commonly characterized by its pre-evolution, Azurill, as evidenced by the episode Abandon Ship! Marill may also do this on occasion.

Habitat

This Pokémon is normally found in and around fresh water.

Diet

Main article: Pokémon food

Marill's diet mainly includes water grasses on riverbeds.

Trophy information

This Aqua Mouse Pokémon evolves into Azumarill. The round ball on the end of its tail acts like a flotation device, so it can float safely on the roughest of water conditions. It resides on Mt. Trivia

File:Alpha mariru.png
Early concept art for Marill
  • Marill's early design had a pink body instead of blue, noticebly smaller ears, and lacked the erractic tail pattern.
  • For months prior to to the release of Pokémon Gold and Silver, Marill was often incorrectly referred to as "Pikablu", likely because of its slight resemblance to Pikachu.
  • Marill's name was originally spelled Marril, as shown in some merchandise for the first movie.
  • Marill was the fourth Generation II Pokémon to appear before the Johto series (after Ho-Oh, Togepi and Donphan)
  • Marill is the only Pokémon that evolves from a pure Template:Type2 Pokémon but isn't a Normal-type itself, other than the Eeveelutions.
  • Marill is similar to Pikachu in several ways, such as both having an evolution introduced in the same generation as themselves and a pre-evolution introduced in the next generation.
  • Since its introduction, Marill has been available in every Japan-centric regional Pokédex.

Origin

Marill may be based upon a combination of a mouse and a beach ball or possibly a personal flotation device or lifebuoy. Its body and ears also resemble a water molecule.

Name origin

Marill's name may be a combination of marine, of the water, and rill, a small river or brook. The name may also come from a contraction of the phrase marine blue. In Japanese, it's possible that the name could have derived from 丸い marui, round or circular, or 鞠 mari, ball, and 瑠璃 ruri, lapis lazuli.
