Terrain (Japanese: フィールド field) is a type of field effect in the Pokémon games that affects Pokémon on the ground. The mechanic was introduced in Generation VI. In battle, there is often no initial terrain, but it can be changed by Pokémon's moves and Abilities. Only one type of terrain may be present at a time, with any new terrain put in place overwriting the previous terrain.
There are four types of terrain: Electric Terrain, Grassy Terrain, Misty Terrain, and Psychic Terrain.
In the core series games
Causing terrain
Each terrain has a corresponding move, Max Move, and Ability that will create it. Psychic Terrain can be invoked by a certain Z-Move as well.

Terrain normally lasts for 5 turns regardless of how it is created, but if the Pokémon with that move or Ability held a Terrain Extender when the terrain was put into effect, it lasts 8 turns.
Removing terrain
Terrain can be removed using certain moves.

Effects
- Electric Terrain: Increases the power of Electric-type moves used by Pokémon on the ground by 50%Gen. VI-VII/30%Gen. VIII. Prevents Pokémon on the ground from falling asleep and being afflicted by Yawn.
- Grassy Terrain: Increases the power of Grass-type moves used by Pokémon on the ground by 50%Gen. VI-VII/30%Gen. VIII. Restores 1/16 HP to all Pokémon on the ground each turn. Halves the damage taken from Bulldoze, Earthquake, and Magnitude.
- Misty Terrain: Halves the damage taken by Pokémon on the ground from Dragon-type moves. Prevents Pokémon on the ground from being afflicted with status conditions and (from Generation VII onward) confusion.
- Psychic Terrain: Increases the power of Psychic-type moves used by Pokémon on the ground by 50%Gen. VII/30%Gen. VIII. Prevents Pokémon on the ground from being hit by moves with increased priority.
Pokémon that are in the semi-invulnerable turn of a move are considered to not be on the ground for the purposes of terrain.
Natural objects disappear and cannot be destroyed while terrain is in effect.

Environment-based moves
Terrain causes moves that vary with environment to ignore the current location and determine their effect based on the terrain, regardless of whether the move's user is on the ground.

Items
If a Pokémon is holding one of these four held items when the appropriate terrain is created, or switches in while the appropriate terrain is in effect, the item will be consumed and boost one of the holder's stats by one stage. The item will activate regardless of whether or not the Pokémon is grounded.

Special Case
In Legendary Arena/Gauntlet, Tapu Bulu instantly sets Grassy Terrain every time it gets a new HP bar, including when its battle starts. These instances do not fall into any of the previous four categories.
Removing terrain
Only Defog can clear terrain effects.

Effects
- Electric Terrain: Increases the damage of Electric-type attacks by 50% and prevents afflictions of Sleep (though it does not cure Pokémon who were already asleep before that terrain takes effect).
- Grassy Terrain: Increases the damage of Grass-type attacks by 50% and restores HP of the Pokémon that uses a Grass-type move by 1/16 of their maximum HP (unless they hit themselves in confusion).
- Psychic Terrain: Increases the damage of Psychic-type attacks by 50%.

Differences
Terrain effects function similarly in Pokémon Masters EX as they do in the core series. Yet, here are their differences:
- All terrain impact all Pokémon on the field. The concept of being (un)grounded is absent in this game except for Pokémon using Fly or Bounce.
- Grassy Terrain does not reduce the damage of Bulldoze or Earthquake.
- Psychic Terrain does not prevent moves with increased priority from hitting Pokémon because such moves don't exist in this game.
- All terrain last for 45 seconds excluding time that sync pairs spend performing Sync Moves or Max Moves but including time that they spend to use regular moves. (This accommodates for this game having real-time battles instead of turn-based ones.)
Effects on attack moves
Some attack moves can have their effects changed depending on the terrain. Thus far, only Grassy Glide falls in this category.
