In The Indigo Disk, Iono can appear in the Blueberry Academy League Club as a special coach, and can be found speaking with Brassius, Larry, Tulip, Grusha, Clavell, or Salvatore. In her conversations with the player, she reveals that she's taking this opportunity at the Academy for her next stream, coming up with the title “Gym Leader Iono INFILTRATES this WEIRD ACADEMY! You won’t BELIEVE what she finds!”[3] She then asks the player what her focus should be on, and if the player suggests the director, she describes how risky it could be to bring on a "snoozer guest", and how it'd be a "Top 10 Iono Betrayals moment..."[4] If suggested in their initial meeting, Iono will report back on her second visit to the League Club that Cyrano's appearance made her viewer count rise dramatically due to his natural charisma.[5] After beating her in a rematch, she will give the player the Iono Zone Case as a gift, which she describes as an "SSS-tier drop!"[6]
Character
Iono is a streamer, online video creator, and an influencer from the Paldea region, and she runs a livestream called "Iono Zone" (Japanese: ドンナモンジャTV Donnamonja TV).[7] She is known to stream her work as a Gym Leader, and prioritizes viewer numbers and engagement on her channel.[8] As such, she never misses the chance to have a collaboration with another popular figure, with characters in the game mentioning she's done so with Tulip on one occasion,[9] who is often eager to collaborate with her, although it appears to cause the other some issues with her self-esteem.[10] In The Indigo Disk, she asks Brassius to appear as a guest on her stream, though to her dismay, he rejects her.[11] However, her popularity is so massive to the point she has trouble casually going on picnics with her Pokémon due to all the attention she attracts,[12] though she later reveals to Larry that she enjoys the recognition.[13]
- Popularity and appeal
To add to her charm, Iono has a habit of mixing languages together, which both she and her fans refer to as "Iono-ese",[9]. Her popularity has reached a variety of significant figures from Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.[9] In one of Salvatore's language classes, he references her as a popular streamer who "smashes several languages together." Grusha used to be a fan of hers, even before she used to do her typical greeting, though he claims to like her older content better due to her current tendency to focus on clicks and sponsorships, much to Iono's chagrin. She no longer reads the comments under her streams because of "THOSE fans".[14] Salvatore, on the other hand, appears to have a better relationship with her upon their initial meeting, referring to her as "Mademoiselle Magnemite".[15]
- Battle philosophy
It's stated that her viewers' reactions are more important to Iono than victory in battle, though she does feel some genuine regret for what she feels was going too far to create content, as shown when talking to Clavell at the League Club. She perks up when he reveals he actually quite liked the name "Mr. Walksabout" that she gave him in her stream.[16] Although she appears to be clueless as to why, Iono's viewers tend to soar higher whenever she loses in a battle, as stated by her on the condition that the player loses in their rematch at Blueberry Academy.[17]
- Fanbase
According to one of her fans that appears during her Gym Challenge, they refer to themselves as part of the "Iono Hype Squad", often referring to her as "Miss Iono",[9] with Tulip in particular referring to her as simply "Nono".[10] Iono herself calls her fans "Iono Zoners", and in some cases, simply "chat".[18][19] Iono is also aware that most of her more loyal fans are still in school, with many already attending Blueberry Academy prior to her arrival,[20] including Ray the Student in Drayton's Elite Trial.[21] A Trainer in the Terarium also remarks that they've sworn they've seen the player on the Iono Zone before, referring to the player's battles with her in Paldea.[22]
Appearance
Whilst her age is unknown, characters in Levincia state that Iono has been a streamer for quite a few years, wondering how old she really is.[9] She appears to be an adult herself when referring to others as being "still in school."[20] Regardless, Iono is a small, thin woman with long arms and legs.
Her teal and pink hair reaches down below her knees, with two wide ponytails of contrasting colors that follow behind her. At the end of each ponytail, there are "bulbs" with alternating pink and teal surfaces. The rest of her hair is fairly short on top, with a short pink bang protruding from some hair above her forehead in the appearance of a ribbon, which due to the Miniature Torso Figures line, is confirmed to be a styled part of her hair.
Iono's contact lenses are a gradient of various colors, including purple, pink, and light yellow, with her eyelashes having a black appearance until their very ends, where they look like segmented purple triangles that are disconnected from the actual lash itself. In 2D adaptations of her design, such as her official artwork and animated appearances, the purple segments of her eyelashes appear behind her hair regardless of the perspective, but in both her debut reveal stream as well as Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, this is not the case. Alongside her short, thin eyebrows, it may suggest that Iono's hair color is naturally black. Her teeth are notably different from that of other characters, with each tooth sporting a jagged shark-like appearance. It's possible that this is a reference to the design of popular virtual YouTuber characters in the real world.
- Clothing
She primarily wears an oversized yellow and black jacket featuring her logo on the front, with thin straps at the end of each sleeve that feature Poké Balls on their ends. The sheer size of this jacket is enough to cradle her phone, as seen in her concept art. Underneath the jacket, she wears a silver bodysuit that hooks around her neck at the top with a screw-like object, covering her back and chest, with a black textured outfit underneath that reaches down to her thighs. The screw-like object seen near her neck is also embedded onto the outside each of Iono's shoes, which feature a notable high heel and are a similar silvery color to her bodysuit, with the base of each shoe being a yellow color. Between her shoes, bodysuit, and what appears to be a thigh-high sock covering all of her right leg, they all feature a repeating hexagonal pattern. Her left thigh has a black strap wrapped around it, featuring some unknown gray text.
- Accessories
Iono is also accessorized with two hair clips that look like Magnemite. Although they do not appear to be Pokémon, described by Iono in her reveal trailer simply as "fancy shmancy hair clips",[7] they seem to be able to animate and move around on their own. Her concept art in both the games and anime show that the hair clips are able to mimic her reactions, such as when Iono is in a state of shock or anger. Various appearances show them accentuating her reactions, such as spinning around her head cartoonishly when she is stunned. As seen in her reveal trailer, the hair clips can emote with a variety of different expressions shown on their eyes, in a way identical to actual Magnemite. They also appear to be able to act independently, as they once went on what Iono describes as a "bzzt-bzzt-smash rampage" in Chargestone Cavern.[18] Strangely, Iono never uses any Pokémon from the Magnemite family on her team, although she offers to trade a Magnemite to the player in The Indigo Disk.
- Mannerisms
Iono moves animatedly in a variety of ways. During her streams, she will often shake in place with clenched teeth, when in an awkward or otherwise tense situation. During a battle, she steps up and down in place, an action that is also noted on her concept art. Due to her oversized jacket, Iono's hands are rarely seen, leading to actions such as waving or even holding a Poké Ball with the arms of her coat. The dainty throwing style that the player can obtain at the League Club is identical to the one used by Iono in battle, and is shared with Poppy.
Pokémon
Iono will Terastallize her Mismagius at the first opportunity.
All of her Pokémon are kept in Ultra Balls.

In the anime
Main series
Iono first appeared in Someone We Can't See! Whosawhatsit?, where she was is revealed to be friends with Dot. Iono was contacted by Dot to help her find Liko, who was missing. Taking the opportunity, Iono asked Dot if she wanted to do a collaboration in her live show as Nidothing to better spread the word. With the help of Iono, Dot was able to locate Liko in Levincia. Iono then turned the search into a game of tag and later congratulated Roy for finding Liko and thanked Liko for her help in making her stream a hit.
In Respective Departures, Iono reappeared talking to Dot via video conference, she showed that she knew that Dot had finally become a Trainer and soon after when she was interrupted by Liko and Roy, she talked to Liko a little about her friendship with Dot and wished everyone to have fun at the planned party for Diana's farewell to Brave Olivine.
In HZ041, Iono appeared in a flashback that took place before Dot joined the Rising Volt Tacklers. During a livestream in the Iono Zone, she read a comment from Dot about how to deal with a dilemma. Following Iono's response, Dot got the impetus she felt she needed to join the group.
In HZ044, Iono appeared hosting an edition of Iono Zone when she was interrupted by the appearance of Black Rayquaza in the skies, dancing animatedly and striking the pose in her artwork before spotting it some distance away.
Iono appeared in a flashback to Liko and Roy's journey in HZ045.
In HZ046, Iono was selected as Dot's challenge as part of Terastal Training.
Sometime after Dot, Liko, and Roy began their training, Iono helped the Rising Volt Tacklers get a place to keep the Brave Olivine safe while it was repaired.
In HZ049, Iono met Dot again at the dock where the Brave Olivine was docked. Seeing Dot's insecurity without the Nidothing outfit, Iono proposed that Dot battle as Nidothing and that, in the meantime, Roy had a training battle with Dot. Later, upon seeing Dot's confidence in winning a battle alongside Quaxly, Iono announced in a video that Dot would be her opponent in an online event. In secret, Iono revealed that she would like to face Dot as Nidothing because it would increase her online audience, but she was happy for her friend.
In HZ050, Iono participated in another Nidothing video, with her outgoing personality, Iono overshadowed Dot a little when the two were talking about the upcoming battle between the two. The next day, Iono finally had her battle with Dot, and despite the efforts of Dot and Quaxly, Iono managed to win the battle. After the battle, Iono approved Dot in the Terastal Training and congratulated Dot for understanding a little more how to evolve as a Trainer.
In HZ055, Iono participated in the Elite Four Tag Battle as Dot's partner. They faced against Poppy, with Iono doing most of the fighting during Dot's frequent moments of uncertainty, eventually leading to her defeating Poppy's Copperajah and winning the battle for her and Dot. Despite Dot feeling she didn't do much to benefit her side in the battle, Iono agreed with Poppy that Dot was just thinking too hard about it and then took her leave.
Character
In the anime, Iono shares many of the characteristics and personality of her game counterpart. She also showed a lot of affection for Dot, especially when she asked Liko to protect Dot.
Design
Iono was adapted for Pokémon Horizons: The Series by the series' character designers. As can be seen in her concept art, Iono's Magnemite hair clips can move independently, especially when jumping upwards in a state of surprise. This is similar to the games, so much so that the concept art for her appearance in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet also makes note of this. Despite this, her design is simpler for animation, as she lacks the hexagonal pattern that travels up her clothing and boots.
Her debut episode was animation directed by Masaaki Iwane, who solo-animates almost all of the episodes he participates on.[23] As a result, Iono's first appearance was entirely animated in his style, where he uses a variety of animation techniques idiosyncratic to him. Her personality is made clear by Iwane's strong understanding of animation timing, allowing him to hold her on dynamic poses with very little in-betweens, which then snap together to create a wealth of exaggerated movements, such as when she's addressing her fans after Liko has been found. To further emphasize this, he often animates her more drawn-out movements on every single frame, which makes her movements appear even more erratic when snapping back to more limited animation, all in a very short timespan.
In both Iono's reveal trailer and game debut in Generation IX, she often tends to step in place, something that is absent from her movement in the anime.
She appeared briefly in Respective Departures without her hair accessories, which according to her, is part of her personality and who she really is.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet
Iono was initially revealed to the public on October 12th, 2022, in a video uploaded to all official Pokémon YouTube channels titled Guess Iono’s Partner Pokémon![24] with the intent to tease the reveal of her partner Pokémon, Bellibolt, just two days later in Meet Bellibolt.[25] An announcement of her reveal was made just one day prior, with the Japanese account including a silhouetted tease of her design.[26] In the videos, she dances around animatedly, spouts her usual catchphrases, and baits the audience to catch the full reveal, letting slip that she chose to do so to rack up the on her follow-up.
Her voice in these reveals went uncredited for a whole year until the release of Breathe In, which, in re-using audio from this animation for a short cameo featuring Iono, confirms her voice actress here was Fairouz Ai.[27]

Let's Play the Pokémon Card Game!
Monjana (Japanese: もんじゃな Monjana), a cross-canon counterpart of Iono, appeared in the Scarlet & Violet arc of Let's Play the Pokémon Card Game!, where she battles against the protagonists. Her deck is themed around Electric-type Pokémon, such as Pikachu and Pawmi, and often mentions how lucky she is at the game.[28] Monjana's personality appears to be similar to that of Iono's in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, as she maintains a thoroughly smug attitude throughout both of her battles, though her design is radically different. The Magnemite-shaped hairclips have been replaced with Master Balls, and her hair now curves below her face in the shape of lightning bolts. Additionally, she now has an actual ribbon in her hair, as opposed to having her hair styled like a ribbon above her fringe.
Her design is far simpler in this manga; her sharp teeth have been removed in favor of a single fang, with further simplifications made to her boots and singular thigh high, the latter of which was removed. Her jacket now resembles a Bellibolt in spite of it not making an appearance in Monjana's deck during the chapter she is in, but its expression on the jacket shifts depending on Monjana's own personality for comedic effect.
